When I was asked to write an article about Bob Cox, a longtime member who recently passed away, I immediately thought of our last time together. We attended the “Smith Road Rallye” that was held in early June. My wife, Kathy, and I decided it might be fun to go to a rallye. We had been working really hard and wanted a break. There are a lot of new members added to the club since Kathy and I were really active, so we didn’t really know a lot of folks there. We were so happy to see Bob and Cathy Cox show up! Maybe because of our years of experience (a kind way of saying advanced age), Bob and Cathy took first place and Kathy and I took second place. It was a fun drive, but the part we really enjoyed was the time in the restaurant after the rallye. Bob and I managed to sit together. We have done that a lot through the years. I always enjoyed visiting with Bob. We shared a love for electronic gadgets—I guess you could call us geeks or nerds. Bob and I would share “Mac” stories—basically we congratulated ourselves on being wise enough to choose Apple computers. We would have a good laugh at the rest of the world who would battle with their Windows machines. We would talk about the latest app for our iPhones. We would discuss the finer points of our latest video toys or cameras. He would always have something new to show and tell about. Bob also had a love for music. I would tell him about my last instrument acquisition and he would seem duly impressed. If someone were to ask me about Bob Cox, I would have to say he was steady as a rock. He and Cathy served on the M-B Club board while I was president. They were good, faithful members—rarely missing a meeting and always willing to pitch in. You could always count on them. Of course Bob loved automobiles. I remember drooling over his mid-90’s silver SL that looked like it just came from the showroom. He told me that he wanted to sell it. If I could have figured out how to add a fourth garage to my home, I would have bought that car before the day was out. It is absolutely gorgeous! Now Bob is gone. We have wonderful memories of a good, faithful friend. I’ll bet he and St. Peter are talking about the finer points of the new iPhone 6 right now. Farewell old friend! Wehaveoneofthebestandmostactivesectionsinthecountry,andIhopetodoallthatIcantopromotetheclubandhelpitgrow.BUT...and this is a really BIG but, theclub officers cannot do it alone. On Saturday June 13thweconvenedatJohnRyan’shouseforanother“SaturdayGarage”gathering.ThistimeKevin Arburn’s 1987 560SL was on the menu and the plan was to do a routine oil & filter change and replace a suspect crankshaftpositionsensor. The event turned into an oil change only affairwhen a pesky 6mm allen bolt -- one of two holding down the bracket for the crank sensor -- refused to budge and the allen-head became stripped. There was no way to remove it withoutspecialtools, sothispartoftheprojectwasshelvedand we pressed on to change the oil and filter. However, in between failure and success we did manage a short road trip to Harbor Freight so scope out thetoolsanduseupsomeofJohnRyan’scoupons!Manythanks to the participants: Our host John Ryan, KevinArburn, Ian Harns, Rich Carlson and Mark Moody.

Kevin works on stuff under the hood, then after changing the oil he double checks the oil level by carefully examining the dip stick.

Kevin, Ian and Mark did all the work while John and Rich stood around and drank cof-fee and told jokes.
