Dear McAuliffe Families
As each month slips by I reflect on all the incredibleexperiences our students engage in at McAuliffe andhow supportive our families are in the learning of allchildren This month many of our students participatedin the performance of Once On This Island and toquote a 7th grade parent ldquoI felt like I was at the BuellTheater watching professionals performrdquo I couldnrsquot agree more We also had6th grade students creating their own planets complete with a solar system 7thgrade students completing their National History Day projects and 8th gradestudents working on their Community Projects In addition every day ourteachers engage all students in a rigorous engaging and high level lessonswhich prepare our students to take the next step in their learning
During this time of learning our Nation experienced yet another tragedy withthe school shooting in Florida In the midst of this tragedy we are left withunanswered questions yet again What could have been done to prevent

this What can schools do to help students feel more connected What cancommunities do to offer opportunities for young people to be engaged in waysthat they find meaning I am sure many of you are having these types ofconversations with your children families neighbors co-workers and friendsAt McAuliffe we continue to work with all of our students to help them feelknown and encourage them to be engaged in school activities in order to makeconnections Please know that our counselors along with our teachers staffand administration are available to support all of our students If you haveconcerns please reach out Please also take note of an opportunity outlinedlater in this newsletter for parentsguardians to participate in learning moreabout depression in teens with Dr Scott Cypers PhD In addition here are twoother resources from DPS Talking to Children About Violence and DPSEmergency Information Guide for Parents
There are no easy answers to these complex situations however as acommunity we will continue to work to ensure all of our students feel safe andknown

Mr Dennis Gets Soaked This week Mr Dennis was soaked by MsHougenrsquos advisory The entire schoolcommunity collected over $4400 for theSpark Change campaign this yearHowever Ms Hougens advisory had thehonor of pulling theemergency shower handle todouse Mr Dennis as their advisorycollected the most money overallCongrats to Ms Hougens advisory andhuge shout out to Mr Dennis for beingsuch a great sport

Spelling Bee Great job to the three 6th grade students who represented McAuliffe in the CityWritten spelling competition on Saturday February 10th Mackenzie GuthmannOlivia Harris and Grant Wiebe all did a great job and Grant placed 9th out ofover 150 spellers Grant will go on to compete in the City Oral competition onMarch 1st and then on to the Colorado State Spelling Bee sponsored byScripps and the Denver Post where he will compete against top spellers from
