The Rocketplane takes off under afterburning turbojet power. Continuing on turbojet power, the Rocketplane climbs out along its intended suborbital ground track. Following climb/cruise to an altitude of 13,120 m (45,000 ft) and a distance of 129 km (80 miles), The Rocketplane performs a 180o turn to ensure that the descent from reentry will bring the Rocketplane back to the landing site. At 13,120 m (45,000 ft) the rocket engine is ignited with the Rocketplane still in level horizontal flight. This insures the vehicle is in a proper attitude for immediate recovery if there is an anomaly during rocket ignition. Achieving full thrust on the rocket, the Rocketplane performs a 3g pull-up maneuver. The Rocketplane achieves an ascent angle of 67o (gamma) and achieves main engine cut off (MECO) at an altitude of 48,171 m (158,000 ft) at Mach 3.5 with maximum ascent acceleration approaching 3.5gs. The Rocketplane then coasts to an apogee of 103,659 km (340,000ft+) providing a 3-4 minute sensation of weightlessness with approximately 3.2 min of μg, disturbed only by reaction control system (RCS) pulses. The Rocketplane maintains >305 m/s (>1,000 ft/s) horizontal velocity at all times, allowing it to gently reenter, subjecting the crew to <4gs upon reentry. Following reentry, The Rocketplane decelerates to subsonic speeds and maneuvers to align to the landing site. At this time the turbojets are restarted and maintained at flight idle for energy management purposes. The Rocketplane then lands at the originating spaceport roughly 35-45 minutes after takeoff.
