Morecambe Community High School is at the heart of its community We take students of all abilities, from those with specific learning needs to those with potential for Oxbridge entrance.

We believe in providing education for life. In other words, young people are supported to become independent learners with the ability to acquire the academic, vocational and social skills required to help them take their place in the adult world.

Our role is to ensure that each student leaves the school with an academic passport to choose the right pathway for him or her.

The strength of the school is the high quality of the teaching and care we provide.

“ Morecambe Community High School’s status as a Specialist College for Maths and Computing provides opportunity for extra investment to support learning in innovative ways. The young people of Morecambe deserve this renewed investment in their lives and it is our privilege to insist upon it on their behalf.”

A caring communityAlthough we are a large school, each student is well known by teams of committed teachers and teaching assistants. Every child will be a member of a house, a form and a year group. In this way, we ensure that a well trained professional is always available, to provide support in a variety of contexts.

Morecambe Community High School is a very good school and the reasons for this are related to its commitment to traditional values and the application of sensible rules in a changing and challenging world.

A responsible community of young citizensStudents are given the opportunity to contribute their own ideas to the running of the school through the school councils, which raise funds for charity and school improvement projects.

Year 11 students work as seniors supporting students in Year 7, while Sixth Form students play a key role in the smooth running of the school through the Prefect System.

Commitment to improvementThe 2007 OFSTED report said “Teachers’ subject knowledge is strong, lessons are well organised and teachers provide a good explanation of the work to be done”.

The commitment of Specialist Status has enhanced the learning opportunities for all.

We believe that if a student has the potential to be successful and is willing to work hard then we do create the climate for the highest achievement.

The commitment of Specialist Status has enhanced the learning opportunities for all.

We believe that if a student has the potential to be successful and is willing to work hard then we do create the climate for the highest achievement.

A wide range of opportunitiesStudents’ enjoyment of school is evident in the high take-up of enrichment and extra-curricular activities. We have an excellent reputation in Sport, Outdoor Education and the Performing Arts.

Students have the opportunity to be involved in musical groups, the annual school production, trips to France, Poland, Italy, an annual ski trip and much more.

Innovative curriculumThe curriculum is designed to enable all students to choose the most appropriate pathway to suit their needs and aptitudes at GCSE and post-sixteen. The vocational offer at both stages assists students in being successful and matching their study to their potential employment. Of course, the school still insists upon having available to all students the academic pathways that lead to most post sixteen students achieving a place at University.

Sporting excellenceWe believe that the opportunity to achieve success through sport is part of the personal development of all students. We ensure that we have the range of activities to engage young people and have improved the quality of resources to match the enthusiasm we find in the participants.

We believe that all students should have the opportunity to represent the school and frequently put out two or three teams for different year groups. We also aim to encourage our talented sportsmen and women to go on to county and national honours.

Artistic excellenceThe annual school production, a wide range of music groups from jazz to rock, a drama club, theatre visits, the life drawing class and the work of artists in residence all help to broaden students’ artistic experience. The school offers lessons in a wide variety of instruments and there is a bursary scheme to provide support for some students to take instrumental lessons.

Outdoor educationWe offer a unique opportunity for all students to enjoy a range of outdoor activities as part of the curriculum.

At Key Stage 3 every student will have a five day experience including sailing, rock climbing, caving, kayaking and ghyll scrambling.

At Key Stage 4 students have the opportunity to continue their Outdoor Education as part of the GCSE PE or Public Services courses. An extension programme is available in which all students are actively encouraged to become involved.

LibraryThe Lawther Library opened in 2001 and was the gift of Professor Patrick Lawther, a former student of the school. It houses a wide range of books, multi media resources and computers. A staff of two librarians support students in using these facilities effectively. The Library houses the after school homework club and provides students with tremendous opportunities to assist their development as independent learners.

Personal Social and Health Education (CLASS)We believe that every student needs an education for life. Our PHSE course is taught throughout the school by a team of committed and experienced staff.

They explore issues such as personal development, relationships, voting, human rights and citizenship.

In this way we aim to ensure that every student leaves us ready to cope with the demands of the modern world.

Partnership with parentsWe believe that education is a three way partnership between the school, the students and their parents. As well as annual parents’ consultation evenings we also offer regular information events at critical points in the students’ school career such as; induction to Year 7, GCSE and Post 16 options and settling in to Year 10 and 12.

Throughout the year we provide detailed reports about the potential and actual achievement of all students. Our well qualified and experienced members of staff have high expectations of all students in academic work and we believe that our partnership with parents is vital in supporting students.

Committed teaching staffAt Morecambe Community High School we have highly qualified and experienced teaching staff.

With over 90 teachers and a further 50 support staff we are able to offer subject expertise in a wide variety of areas.

Partnerships with the communityWe are, in a proper sense, a community school in that we seek to enrich the lives of our students, parents and extended families through the range of activities we encourage. A comment from a student during the recent OFSTED Inspection captured the relationships within the school; “We are now a community working together.”

Sixth FormAn important feature of Morecambe Community High School is its successful Sixth Form, which has received considerable praise, not only for the academic provision, but also for the wide range of opportunities open to students.
