In today’s challenging Oil and Gas market, we must adopt a new practical mind-set, forging close relationships with our customers, principals and manufacturers and focusing on the optimization of operating costs as this will increase value for them. Though collaborative work, we are able to draw on KS Group of Companies’ overlapping and cross-border countries’ strength and knowledge in order to unlock value and ultimately reduce total operating costs for our customers, which will redound to increased revenue and profitability.

We hope to see recovery in 2017.

• The world needs a significant amount of energy

• The supply and demand imbalance seems to be tightening

• Global and US oil demands continue to show moderate but steady growth

We are seeing positive developments that could help the industry evolve into a better place. The challenges are huge, but so are the opportunities that lie ahead. BE READY.

In 2016, the united KS Energy Team has delivered tremendous effort and went the extra mile to face a very deep downturn of the oil & gas industry. I have no doubt that with such a positive and hardworking attitude we will again undertake the challenge ahead of us in 2017 and place ourselves in a strong position to be ready for the upturn. I feel honoured to be part of the KSE team.

By Alec Er (ATOES), MD

Many see a silver lining in the stability of oil prices above USD 50 per barrel over the past months, hoping with enthusiasm that it would keep heading north. Hope, however, is not a strategy. We must come together during the worst years in this industry’s history, strengthen our business offerings and drive the KS Group of Companies into new highs; to prepare ourselves for a more complex market where customers expect us to do better to tackle the needs of an increasingly divergent and multipolar Oil & Gas industry.

Country Director, Ng Shu Shu, took over the Indonesia team in May 2016. Since then, the team has been engaged with the streamlining of operations and driving revenue. Internally, the first three months on the job was focused on housekeeping and reorganization of the team. Sales and Support teams across the three entities in Jakarta (PT KSD Indonesia, PT SSHJ, PT ATOO) were combined to provide better support to our customers. Trainings were conducted, with Product Specialist from HQ, Principals and amongst peers from each entity, to upgrade the team’s product knowledge and cross train them to be able to sell across the different industry segments.

Once internal operations were in order, Shu Shu then turned her attention towards the customers. The Sales team currently makes on-site visits to customers’ yards or plants, to gain insights on products used on site, learn about processes of the industry segment and to improve user relationship – instead of just visiting the customers’ office.

Feedback from the Sales team is that, this has been an eye-opener for them, as they are able to identify new opportunities for the company. Taking the lead from Shu Shu, the sales team have also taken the initiative to source for solutions for customers and network with other suppliers to build profitable working relationships. In view of the bleak forecast for the Oil and Gas industry, the Indonesian team’s goal for 2017 would be to focus on the MRO business, while targeting new segments like power plants, mining, petrochemicals and refineries.

With her many years of experience in the Indonesian market, Shu Shu has definitely provided a new direction for the Indonesian team. Under her guidance, the team is now more united and motivated than ever to take on the challenges of 2017.

Geothermal Drilling

Earlier this year, KS Drilling was awarded with a drilling contract for a geothermal project in North Sumatra, Indonesia. This project commenced in November 2016 and will take approximately 6 months, with the expected value of the new contract estimated to be US$7 million.

Geothermal drilling is the process of creating boreholes in the earth to extract the earth’s heat, which is then converted into energy. Although foreign to geothermal energy, KS Drilling has been in the drilling business for more than 10 years, and is well-equipped to deliver on this project.

Several of the differences between oil and geothermal drilling include temperature, pressure and formation of the wells. Hence all conventional drilling tools, materials and equipment had to be modified to accommodate and withstand such differing conditions. Moreover, the crew involved in this project has had to undergo training to better prepare them for this project.

With new skills, technology and knowledge acquired, KS Drilling hopes to be able to service a wider market.

KSD Vietnam

On 17th – 21st Oct 2016, Velan Inc. and KSD Vietnam made a joint visit to potential customer Nhon Trach Thermal Power Plant in central Vietnam, with the purpose of inspecting all Velan valves used in the plant and to provide technical assistance.

On top of that, KSD Vietnam has also consulted their customer to convert other valves used into the Velan brand, from which they should expect revenue of USD 100,000 per year.

KS Distribution participated in the 21st edition of Offshore South East Asia (OSEA) exhibition and conference. The event commenced on 29 November and was successfully concluded on 2nd December 2016 at Marina Bay Sands Singapore. As a group, this was KS Distribution’s 5th time at this biennial event.

Our booth, as with previous years, was located on Sands Expo and Convention Center’s main floor and next to Singapore’s industry leader, Keppel Offshore & Marine. The space covered a total of 80 sqm in area.

The four-day exhibition brought the sales personnel from various entities closer together as they experienced many areas of cooperation during the exhibition. The team leaders of the show, who were the various MDs of the exhibiting entities, ensured that the company was represented well. The event was tightly managed as our teams collaborated with one another to ensure that event sailed smoothly.

We would like to thank the OSEA committee and the participants from various entities for their contribution to the success of this exhibition. Photos from OSEA 2016 can be found both on the Intranet as well as the KS Distribution website events page.

OGmTech, the International Exhibition on Manufacturing Technology for Oil & Gas, was also held concurrently with OSEA 2016 at Marina Bays Sands Singapore. This event focused on companies that offer equipment manufacturing solutions, such as latest high-end precision engineering technologies and capabilities.

OSEA 2016 occupied a total of 36,000 sqm of exhibition grounds and hosted a turnout of 13,000 trade attendees comprising exhibitors, visitors, conference speakers and delegates, and press members.

Since its inception in 1976, OSEA has built up its reputation as a premium quality oil and gas trade event that facilitates the gathering and networking of IOCs, NOCs and global oil and gas players, government representatives; international trade associations, industry thought leaders as well as various business professionals. At this edition of OSEA, 17 international group pavilions from Australia, China, France, Germany, Italy, Korea (3), Netherlands (2), Norway, Russia, Scotland, Singapore, Taiwan, UK and USA were present.

“OSEA is an event we want to be part of as it is the most established tradeshow of its kind in Asia. It has been a regular meeting point in Singapore every two years now, between the members of Netherlands Maritime Technology and the key players in this segment in Asia. Next to that, OSEA also enables us to look out for new leads for collaboration with industry members. We have been participating in OSEA since 2010 and there is no doubt that it is our preferred networking platform in Asia,” remarks from Mrs. Marjan Lacet, General Manager, Netherlands Maritime Technology Singapore Branch.

Fire Safety The annual fire drill was conducted on the morning of 26th August 2016. The purpose of conducting the drill is to prepare not only the duty guards and first aiders, but every person within the office premises with the actions to take upon the discovery of a fire during office hours. This simulation enables employees to familiarise themselves with the evacuation routes and procedures, and to test out the fire alarm system in 17 and 19 Jurong Port Road. The target of the drill is to have everyone assembled and accounted for within 7 minutes after the fire alarm is sounded. We managed it in 6 minutes.

While knowing how to react in a fire diminishes the risk, prevention is always the best protection. Here are some ways to eliminate fire hazards:

• In the office, shut down your computer and turn off the power switch when you’re leaving for the day. • Do not overload electrical outlets. • Do not overcharge your mobile devices such as mobile phones and tablets especially by leaving them to charge overnight. • Never store combustible items/materials near heat sources. • Check for broken wires and exposed wiring and have them replaced if you find any. • Properly extinguish cigarette butts before throwing them into the rubbish bins.

Race Against Cancer 2016 Held on the 3rd of July, 25 of our colleagues awoke before the sun to contribute to a good cause. As with past years, the 8th annual Race Against Cancer honours those battling with cancer by raising awareness and raising funds for treatment subsidies and research. Not only does this event promote healthy living, the community formed provides a support system, and as the race began everyone knew they would never run alone.

Employees Day

The Company values every employee for their dedicated service to the job. Hence, for the past 2 years, in hopes of showing our appreciation, we’ve dedicated the last Friday of every alternate month to the employees. We hope you’ve enjoyed the various healthy treats.

HypertensionIntervention

The Company held its first Hypertension intervention programme this year. In 12 sessions, it aimed to help participants maintain a healthy blood pressure, and reduce it if necessary, through conscious diet and regular exercise.

High blood pressure is one of the main factors in many diseases including stroke, which, in Singapore, is amongst the leading causes of death. Some causes of high blood pressure include stress, smoking, and leading a sedentary lifestyle.

Participants engaged in a series of Pilates and talks on how to manage stress and take control of their diet, and in turn lower their blood pressure. The top 3 employees who had the most improved blood pressure readings were identified and rewarded for their efforts.

Au Cheen Kuan of KS Drilling was the champion of the

program “Lose to win” in 2014 having lost an impressive 12.2

% of his body weight. He still spots a lean and fit frame today. We are happy

to share his insight on how he adapted the program to

maintain his fitness.

About 2 years ago I signed-up for the company weight management challenge, aptly named “lose to win”. Shortly later, I received an email telling me that I was shortlisted for the “Target Intervention” programme. I wondered briefly if I was in such bad shape that intervention is required, until I struggled through the first exercise class.

With no more doubts, I took up the programme seriously. I started running, cycling, and doing body weight exercises regularly. I was strict with my dietary intake. With discipline, hard work, and support from family and colleagues, I emerged from the target intervention programme 12 weeks later with good results, and recorded a weight loss of 11.4kgs over the period (2 years on, I have maintained my weight at or near the level when the target intervention programme ended. It fluctuates. I still run regularly, do body weight exercises less regularly, and enjoy an occasional cycling session. I am still monitoring my dietary intake. But I must admit things have changed from when I was an enthusiastic member of the target intervention team.

I discovered that running hard daily can be damaging to the body because there is not enough recovery time in between sessions. Several running injuries later, I have taken to jogging. I take a slow relaxed jog for about an hour, daily if I can, but I don’t sweat it if I cannot make the daily run. I also keep all my exercises in moderate intensity. As my target is maintaining good health, any moderate physical activity will

be sufficient to help me achieve that goal, even walking. The key is consistency. There is no point exercising to the point of injury and then having to lay-off exercise until recovery from injury, losing fitness in the interim.

I found that being strict with the diet is very difficult to maintain over a long period of time. These days, I have a more relaxed attitude towards diet. I will eat more when good food is before me, but I will do that less regularly. I do not stop myself from eating food that is considered unhealthy, but will have less of it. The key, again, is consistency . Eating healthily most of the time, but allowing for enjoyment of food and company when the occasion calls. As I do not feel deprived of my favourite “unhealthy” food, I do not crave them and will not overeat when they are available.

The conclusion I reached from this 2 years of experience is that it does not take a lot of sacrifice and hardship to lose weight and maintain the weight loss. All it takes is consistency, a steadfastness to do a little moderate exercise daily, walking qualifies; cultivate a habit of eating healthily most of the time, but allowing for some “unhealthy” food when the opportunity arises. It isn’t even expensive. I run at the park near my home and exercise at home without any equipment. The only cost is the price of shoes. The exercise clothes I bought 2 years ago, I still use today. There is really no excuse for staying unhealthy. I urge you, my colleagues, to take up a healthy lifestyle. Trust me, it’s easy.
