Grandparents Day

In 1970, Marian McQuade, a housewife in

Fayette County, WV, initiated a campaign to set

aside a special day for grandparents

nationwide. She wanted to motivate

grandchildren to tap into the wisdom and

heritage their grandparents could provide. In

1973, West Virginia proclaimed the first

Grandparents Day in the U.S. In 1978, President

Jimmy Carter proclaimed that National

Grandparents Day would be celebrated every

year on the first Sunday after Labor Day.

Water Balloon Fight

Residents and staff had a blast at

our outside water balloon fight!

In honor of all those who lost their lives during the

terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, President

George W. Bush declared September 11 to be

known as Patriot Day. In September 2012, President

Barrack Obama issued a proclamation renaming the

day to Patriot Day and National Day of Service and

Remembrance. President Obama stated that the flag

should be flown at half-staff on Patriot Day and

National Day of Remembrance, and that a moment

of silence should be observed beginning at 8:46 am,

the time of which the first plane struck the North

Tower of the World Trade Center.
