first weekend in June. It is a 4 day community event where you can enjoy a chili cook-off, dance, a Saturday parade down Central Avenue which rolls right into our big PonyExpress Family Fun Festival in Pierson Park. With the Arcata-Eureka Airport on the north end of town, McKinleyville is the com-mercial air gateway to Humboldt County. Also, the Coast Guard Rescue Team isheadquartered next to the airport. The community offers plenty of family activities and parks, a thriving business

Worlds Largest Totem PoleLocated downtown in McKinleyville Shopping Center,on Central Ave. The totem pole weighs 57,000 lbs andis 160 feet high. It was carved from one redwood treeand erected in 1958 or 1959 as a landmark for thethen new McKinleyville Shopping Center. ErnestPierson, Warren Fridley and Joan Nelson did the carv-ing.

Hammond TrailThis 5-plus mile hiking/biking/equestrian California Coastal Trail runsalong the coastline in McKinleyville. The trail has been voted "best placeto walk, jog, or bike" in Humboldt County in a poll taken by the Times-Standard newspaper. The trail can be accessed from Hiller Rd, Murray Rdor Clam Beach County Park. Along the trail you can visit a childrenspark, the ocean, coastal meadows and forest trails, huckleberry picking inSummer, spectacular ocean views and a couple of castles along the way.Hiller ParkLocated at the west end of Hiller Road this park just off the HammondTrail offers a playground, sports complex, picnic area, bathrooms and hik-ing trails.Pierson ParkLocated in the center of McKinleyville, off Central Avenue on Pickett Rd.This park offers a large grass area, playground, horseshoe pits, bocce ballcourts and large group picnic area with barbeque.Azalea State ReserveA reserve for western azalea (Rhododendron occidentale). Each spring, aprofusion of pink and white blossoms scents the air. There are walkingtrails and a picnic area available. Plan to visit in April and May when azal-eas are in bloom. Located on North Bank Rd. on the south side of town.Take the Central Avenue exit off Hwy 101 and travel east on North BankRoad to reach the reserve.Clam Beach County Park 707-445–7652Beachcombing, Clamming, Fishing, Camping, Picknicking and HorsebackRiding are all actitivities that can be enjoyed on this long stretch of openunspoiled coastal beach. Off the 101 north side of McKinleyville - ClamBeach Exit.

Mill Creek FallsThis 15-20 foot waterfall flows year round. It is located on Turner Roadoff the south end of Central Ave. It is on the left hand side and can easilybe missed. Make a U-turn at the end of the Rd about a 1/4 mile down,you will have no problem seeing it on the way back.
