McKinney Rubicon Trail Overview

To protect the water quality of

adjacent surface waters and ensure

long-term public access to the

Rubicon Trail.

Placer County

Responsibilities

Background• Originally a Native American foot-path

• Later used by trappers, explorers, and others to

cross Sierra Nevada

• Today the route is a multi-use recreational trail

• Summer: Jeeps, 4WD vehicles, ATVs, mountain

bikes, dirt bikes, hikers, campers, fishermen

(motorized and non-motorized use)

• Winter: Snowmobiles, skiers, snowboarders, snow

shoers, 4WD vehicles, ATVs (motorized and non-

motorized use)

Conditions in 1990s

Volunteers used their own vehicles and trailers to

haul rock to the waterbar work sites.

Volunteers in action, unloading rock from a pickup

“by foot” to build up the approach to a waterbar.

County Road Crew hauling rock to spread a thick

layer over fill areas near Lily Lake to keep fill in place.

Volunteers seeding and staking down erosion control

blanket in drainage ditch.

Summary of Trail

Maintenance• County involved in water quality projects on

McKinney-Rubicon Springs Road since 1985

• DPW completed drainage repairs with State

Parks funding during summer 2001, help from

FOTR, Hi-Lo’s, and other users, continues to

present day

• Anticipate continued maintenance support from

volunteers/users

• 2006, County formally recognized trail for

recreational use but did not accept as a formal

road easement

• 2020, County entered into multiagency MOU for

improving trail funding and operations

Placer County Snow Facts

•The elevation of Placer County roads range from near sea level to over 7,000 feet.

•The County maintains over 1,050 miles of roadways.

•About 200 miles of these roads fall within expected “normal” snowfall areas on both sides of the Sierra Crest.

•Snowfall amounts in these areas range from less than 100 inches to over 500 inches annually depending on location and elevation.

•Placer County has the highest average annual snowfall of any County in the lower 48 States.

•In California, Placer County consistently ranks in the top 5, for annual expenditures on snow removal – this includes all Cities and Counties.
