THE ADVOCATE ISSUE 7 25 YEARS OF MARINE CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT - THE OWNER’S ADVOCATE - THE CAPTAIN’S ALLY YACHT MANAGEMENT DIVISION MCM supported captains of several yachts as they embarked on adventurous itineraries around the world this past 12 months. Both the 27.5m MS HORTENSE and the 53m SY ERICA XII cruised the Antarctic over the winter with Owners onboard. MCM and the Captains worked together to meet additional insurance and permitting requirements, and to find solutions to less than easy provisioning and delivery of supplies. A successful season was enjoyed by Owners and crew alike who were able to experience a remarkable and remote destination in all of its natural wonder. Cruising also included the Falkland Islands, Chilean Patagonia, the Galapagos, and even a brief stop for HORTENSE at secluded and mysterious Easter Island. The 46m SY CHRISTOPHER and 42.3m M/Y CALLIOPE circumnavigated via the Panama and Suez canals. During her circumnavigation CHRISTOPHER visited the Caribbean, US East Coast, Costa Rica, The Galapagos Islands, French Polynesia, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Bali, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Israel, Turkey and Greece. She is currently cruising the Western Mediterranean before taking the winter off from cruising to undergo an extended yard period after which the Owners are planning to either cruise in northern Europe or possibly navigate the North West Passage and then cruise in Alaska, Vancouver and the West Coast of the US. MCM’s managed yachts remain spread out across the globe, from Tahiti to the Mediterranean to Maine. 2013 also saw the coming into force of the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC) on 20th August which required us to bring our commercially operated yachts into compliance with these new regulations. We have developed all the necessary documentation and procedures to bring yachts into compliance as needed. As part of MCM’s commitment to continuing education, members of our team took part in various training sessions over the past year. Abigail Mayou successfully completed a week-long STCW-95 safety training course in May, and Erika Moore will do the same this fall. Both will have a deeper understanding of the crew’s safety responsibilities and certification requirements, and also be in a position to participate in deliveries and experience life onboard. Erika also attended a Lloyd’s Register Classification and Statutory Survey training in London earlier this year, and the entire team has benefited from workshops in Insurance and Satellite Communications. More courses and seminars are in the works for the team, with the goal of always expanding our knowledge base and expertise in order to best serve our Clients and support the Captains. PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE... In 1988 it’s fair to say that no one anticipated that yachts the size of the 73-foot ENCORE, our first project, would be considered small by today’s standards. And moreover, that 25 years on, the overall length of MCM yachts built to date comes to roughly 6,500 feet – or approximately 2 kilometres! Remarkable… Each yacht takes on a life of her own, from the genesis – discussions at the first design meeting, to the Champagne toasts at the launching celebration and conversations had on night-watches sailing under the Southern Cross. As we look back at the yachts already sailing, we can only become excited at what the future holds. All that remains is for us to thank our Owners for the trust and confidence they invested in us, and the friendships we’ve subsequently developed. NEW TEAM MEMBERS BOAT SHOWS For 2013 we will be in our usual spot at the Monaco Yacht Show (September 25th – 28th) at stand QP58 in the Parvis Piscine air-conditioned pavilion. NEW SIGNINGSNAUTA/JV/BALTIC 190. MCM are pleased to announce a very new signing; a 115ft all-carbon performance cruiser to be built at Baltic Yachts. Naval Architecture will be by Judel Vrolijk, exterior styling and interior design by Nauta. Delivery in 2015. The Owner’s brief is for a very high performance yacht that will distinguish herself on the racecourse, but at the same time a yacht that will perform well as a world cruiser. More on this exciting project in the future.

HOEK TC 90 191. This Truly Classic Hoek design starts with a 90ft aluminum hull already in existence. The intent is to finish the yacht with a traditional raised panel mahogany interior. The Owner plans to spend considerable time on board and to do some serious cruising with his family and visit remote regions of the world. We’ll keep you posted as plans develop.

There are a number of other exciting projects (both motor yachts and sailing yachts) that are in development and we look forward to sharing information on them as they mature.

RHS/HOEK/RY 47m MCM’s next scheduled launch will be Spring 2014 when this magnificent Hoek designed 47m sloop sets sail from her trials berth at Harlingen. Huisman are proceeding apace on all areas of the build taking advantage of their large, diverse and skilled workforce. The engine room is near to completion and the comprehensive testing program will be soon be underway. The ‘modern classic’ stained oak interior from Rhoades Young is well along with many finely executed details. Outside the hull has just had the final topcoat while on deck the exterior teak work also progresses well. It is a unique experience for a project manager to be able to step next door from the boatyard and see rig, winches and hardware in production; but this is the case here with the adjacent Rondal facility dominated by the carbon mast and boom. Truly something to look forward to next spring.

BALTIC 116 JV Work continues on this fine project at Baltic Yachts where the two hull halves were joined (along the centerline) in late August at the same time as the superstructure was infused. Naval Architecture is by Judel Vrolijk and exterior styling & interior design by Nauta. Work on the ‘classic’ teak interior is off to a good start while the Baltic engineering team are well along on systems design; uniquely the plan is to assemble the engine room components in a mock up before moving the completed units on board; this in an effort for increased efficiency. The carbon rig and furling boom will be from Southern Spars where design and engineering is well advanced. Delivery will be in October 2014.

HOEK/CLAASEN 127 We have been fortunate enough to work often with the Hoek Design team and on several notable projects but this one, for a repeat client, is particularly satisfying. At 127ft this yacht will retain the exciting ‘hands on’ and close to the water sailing experience that the Owner enjoys on his present smaller yacht, but at the same time offers significantly larger interior to accommodate guests and crew in spacious luxury. Exterior and interior are traditionally designed, both by Hoek Design. The hull is under construction at Bloemsma and later this year will be moved to Claasen (both yards now under the Claasen Shipyard umbrella) where interior work has already started. Sloop rig and slab reef boom in carbon will be from Offshore Spars. Delivery will be early spring 2015.

MCM are not only managing Lionheart on behalf of her Owners but also the yacht’s successful racing program. Three years ago her owner, an experienced sailor, was new to superyacht Ownership and had no large yacht racing experience. His brief when we started the racing program: “Compete, have fun, and let’s not make fools of ourselves”. Two seasons (and two large silver trophies for her Owner) later, safe to say that we have perhaps overachieved. With the Owner’s unstinting support for the racing program, a consistent and skilled race team and input from all involved in the project, Lionheart has steadily improved to be a major contender in the J-Class fleet.

Having raced on her for every regatta when she was Kokomo (52m), Peter was invited back by the new Owner to sail the now named Prana for the St. Barth Bucket in April and the Dubois Cup in Porto Cervo in June. In St. Barth they had the British Olympian Andy Beadsworth at the helm, and in Sardinia, the USVI Olympic silver medalist and America’s Cup winner Peter Holmberg. Needless to say, at both events she was expertly piloted and acquitted herself well – particularly in the very sporty conditions in Sardinia.

Congratulations to Team heroina on their Over All First Place Finish in the Panerai Classic Yacht Challenge in New England! heroina is a 74’ Frers designed cold molded Sloop that I had the privilege of sailing on this summer. She was designed and built by Germán Frers for his own personal family use 20 years ago. Her flush decks and beautiful hull make her a dream to sail, and a challenge to beat on the water. Team heroina was also honored to have Germán Frers take the helm at the Opera House regatta. Mark Dauplaise

Peter raced on board tiMoneer for two regattas this year, the Antigua Superyacht Challenge and the Loro Piana Superyacht regatta in Porto Cervo. Capt Phil Wade (Ret) gathered a team made up mostly of tiMoneer veterans to help guide her respectably around the race courses, along with the owner and some of her many friends. tiMoneer is always a popular attendee at these regattas.

After her successful South Pacific cruise and a brief work period in Auckland, Marie high tailed it back to the US and her new dock at the Owner’s beautiful Maine estate. Next on the agenda the Shipyard Cup and Newport Bucket. In New England these events have stayed very close to the spirit of the original Bucket regattas with a focus on gentlemanly racing and a good time ashore for Owners, guests and crew. Marie attracted attention and compliments at both events and competed successfully. A full season of charter and racing is planned for the Caribbean this winter.

LatESt rEfItSOver the 2012-13 winter we had several yachts in refit including the Palmer Johnson built KnicKerbocKer having new decks, carbon rigs and a full paint-job and heroina fresh exterior and interior paint, both at the Hinckley yard in the Rhode Island. The J-Class Lionheart had a successful winter work period at Pendennis; the 27m Ron Holland designed WaveLength (ex BooToo) underwent a major refit at Holland Jachtbouw which included complete remodeling of the Saloon, Owners suite and Guest cabins, new cap-rails, full paint job, new main engine and moving the helm from the center cockpit to the aft deck. All this completed in 6 months.

QuINtESSENtIaL aWarDSWe are thrilled to advise you that the 30m performance cruising catamaran Quintessential, has been recognized by the World Superyacht Award judges who awarded her a “Special Catamaran Award” for her layout, quality and overall achievement of the owner’s stated mission.

Furthermore, we are equally proud the judges of the ShowBoats Design Awards saw fit to award her the “Sailing Yachts Interior Design Award”. So congratulations to all involved and in particular – Redman, Whiteley, Dixon, Yachting Developments and Alan Warwick – and of course to the Owner for his vision and tenacity.

We are currently in the planning stage of an extended winter yard period for the 46m Ketch chriStoPher which has just completed a 2-year circumnavigation. During the yard period we will address a few outstanding warranty items and prepare her for another 2-3 years of extended cruising.

As some of our other managed yachts such as KoKoMo, Marie, erica Xii and LaDy b approach their classification society 5 year special surveys, we are beginning to plan extended yard periods for these yachts. KoKoMo and erica Xii will return to New Zealand while the US or Europe are likely destinations for Marie and LaDy b. In all cases development of a clearly defined scope of work, yard selection and proper planning provide the basis for successful yard periods.

We look forward to working with a range of shipyards on these and future refit projects.
