Royal Philips Electronics officially opened its second Philips Lumileds high power LED production facility in Penang last November, which is part of Philips Lighting’s efforts to solidify its leadership position in the fast-growing power LED market.

The Philips Lumileds facility expansion project was announced as an initiative within the Government’s Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) in March 2011. The 300,000 square-feet state-of-the art facility for high volume production of the Philips LUXEON LEDs became fully operational in May 2012. Philips LUXEON LEDs are used in city beautification lighting, LCD displays, camera flash on mobile phones, automotive lighting and various other

applications. It also includes a research, development and design centre to help drive innovative solutions in LED lighting.

“Demand for new digital lighting applications is growing fast and we see very strong sales momentum of LED based Philips products and solutions, with year on year growth rates now exceeding 50 %,” said Frans van Houten, Royal Philips Electronics’ Chief Executive Officer, who was present at the opening.

The Philips Lumileds facility is the first site in Malaysia to be fitted completely with LED lighting in its interior and exterior, which will significantly help to reduce the facility’s carbon footprint, and will result in up to 50% savings from lower energy consumption.

PHILIPS INSPIRING YOUNG MINDS, PARENTS AND

EDUCATORS

SHELL SIGNS NEW

EXPLORATION

CONTRACT

Philips CEO Naeem Shahab Khan recently unveiled their new www.simplyhealthyatschools.my blog in an effort to drive behavioural change towards good health and well being practices.

SimplyHealthy@Schools is a Philips’ global community involvement project aimed at helping children understand that simple steps to improve health and well being and the environment can make a very big difference. Philips believes that children should be empowered to take their health and well being into their own

hands, and are educated to do so and in turn, inspire others.

“The world is growing, and aging, and health problems increase because our pace today is much faster compared to years ago. We eat faster, walk faster, we don’t exercise as much as we like to and sometimes, we don’t sleep enough. I believe that technology will reach out faster to a new generation of children who are used to computers and digital gadgets, and interest them in being participants in the blog,” explained Naeem.

Shell Malaysia announced the signing of a new production sharing contract (PSC) with PETRONAS recently to explore for oil and gas offshore Sarawak.

The SK319 PSC will see Shell undertake an initial 3 year exploration program to comprehensively explore an area totalling 2,727 square kilometers within block SK319 in Central Luconia, offshore Sarawak. Sarawak Shell Berhad will be the operator and will partner PETRONAS Carigali with a 50:50 participating equity split.

The new PSC forms part of Shell’s Lost Cost Exploration & Development (LCD) focus that will allow the company to carry out a multi well exploration campaign to further explore and de-risk the mature carbonate pinnacle play in Central Luconia.

Iain Low, Shell Malaysia Chairman and Managing Director of Sarawak Shell commented, “The successful execution of this new PSC and Joint Operating Agreement marks another important milestone for Shell in Malaysia after the signing of the SK318 and 2B exporation contracts for offshore Sarawak earlier this year. This is the third operated exploration PSC that Shell has signed in 2012 and adds to Shell’s growing exploration position in Malaysia.”

HOW DO GLOBAL LEADERS DEVELOP?Text by: Marie Tseng, Cultural Impact Sdn Bhd

Diversity and cross-cultural training programs are not always a priority for companies, even when employees are working in a multicultural environment.

Many skeptics deny the impact of local cultures on organizational cultures, minimize the importance of national cultures in people’s interactions (“After all, we are all the same”) and believe that being exposed to people of different backgrounds is sufficient to become culturally competent.

A new research conducted by Steve Terrell, Doctor in Human Resources Development at the George Washington University highlights how Global leaders develop and the importance of learning and training in order to be prepared for global challenges.

Dr.Terell interviewed global leaders from 6 major industries (from pharmaceutical, to consumer products and financial services) and focused on:

- What Global leaders experience- What they learn that contributes to their development as global leaders - How they learn

There are two essential aspects in developing global leadership qualities. First, cultural sensitivity: global leaders have an openness to different environments and cultures; they appreciate and value cultural differences and take the time to understand different views and perspectives without being judgmental.

Second, people skills: they invest time in developing and maintaining relationships and networks. They highly value what they

GLOBAL LEADERSDIALOGUE

can learn from others; they are patient and seek to understand the people with whom they interact from the beginning.

Based on his findings, Terell identified 6 factors that contribute to the development of global leaders:

1- the importance of cultural awareness, being curious of other modes of thinking and being sensitive to other cultures2- the ability to leave one’s comfort zone, be flexible and deal with ambiguity in a foreign environment to develop a global mindset3- learning by observing and reflecting on their direct experiences4- connecting with people in an authentic and humble manner5- passion, resilience and tolerance as key qualities of global leaders6- people leadership skills across culture.

How one approaches a cross-cultural encounter will highly affect how much one gains from that experience. Global leaders are curious and have a great desire to learn about other cultures. They will discover, explore and find out about other cultures before working and interacting with people from different cultures.

When engaged in multicultural dealings, they will observe and take mental

notes of people’s behaviour as well as organization’s dynamics.

Finally, Global leaders take time to reflect on their experiences, analyse their actions so that they can quickly recognize similar situations in the future and adapt quickly.

Although it has been recognized that Global leaders who have been exposed to multicultural environments for a longer period of time develop better skills, these same leaders and managers are the ones who acknowledge the value of awareness and training programs, in order to develop and sharpen Cross Cultural Competences and skills.

Any company that has a multicultural work force should nurture and develop cross-cultural competences in their employees.

This can be done through:

- Cultural awareness programs, both formal and informal- Assessing cultural competence of individuals and teams- Offering personal development programs to build cultural competences - Offering training in cross-cultural management and communication to multicultural teams.

EMBASSY NEWSNETHERLANDS EMBASSY NEWS

After a relatively quick round of negotiations, the VVD (People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy) and the PvdA (Labour Party) concluded a coalition agreement on October 29th. The new coalition agreement is entitled ‘Building Bridges’, bridges between different groups in society, being open to the world around us.

The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Malaysia continues to implement this openness in Dutch foreign policy, expressed by the importance of an international orientation, international cooperation and foreign trade relations.

The newly created post of Minister for Foreign Trade and Development

Cooperation underlines the weight given to, as well as the cohesion between, both trade and development cooperation.

The new government will continue the focus on the Dutch ‘top sectors’ . In addition, innovation, sustainable growth and green technology are put on top of the agenda, priorities that are equally highly valued by our Malaysian counterparts.

The Embassy is motivated to build upon this solid basis to further enhance the strong economic bilateral ties between the Netherlands and Malaysia. The embassy will continue to do so by being open to our international counterparts and confident of the strengths of Dutch as well as Malaysian businesses.

RELATIONS WITH

PENANG

On November 22nd, Netherlands Ambassador H.E. Paul Bekkers hosted a reception to introduce the new deputy Head of Mission, Ton Mandemaker, and new Trade Counsellor Anne de Graaf to the Dutch-Malaysian network in Penang.

In his opening address, the Ambassador underlined the excellent relation between Penang and The Netherlands. The Chief Minister of Penang, Lim Guan Eng echoed the valuable bilateral relation and welcomed the new Dutch colleagues. In addition to the importance of Penang in the Dutch-Malaysian economic ties, several events in November expressed this strong relation between Penang and The Netherlands: the EU-Penang day on 21 November, the performance of the Jazz musician Madeline Bell on the Penang Jazz Festival and the participation of Dutch writers in the Georgetown Literary Festival (23-25 November).

The Embassy aims to further deepen the relation with Penang. The successful and warm visit to Penang will therefore definitely be followed by more visits in the coming months.

STUDENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAMTHE INTERN INTERVIEW:

TIM DE JONG

Tim is a 4th year Business Economics student at Windesheim University in Zwolle. Currently in Malaysia doing his graduation internship with MDBC member company Silverstreet Malaysia, he is writing his thesis about the compliance of Silverstreet to Dutch and Malaysian Law regarding Transfer Pricing.

Silverstreet is a specialist in Mobile Messaging (SMS) offering global MT termination options: If a company wants to send a large amount of text messages anywhere in the world, Silverstreet can and will arrange this for a better price and success rate than when the company does it by themselves.

Silverstreet Malaysia is a subsidiary of Silverstreet BV, which means that

the management is the same in both companies. Silverstreet Malaysia’s main activity is providing services to Silverstreet BV.

According to Tim, “Transfer pricing, also called internal settlement or intercompany pricing, concerns the pricing of transactions between group companies. The transactions can be related to goods or services, but also to making available intangible assets like patents or trademarks.

It is required by law to use intercompany transfer pricing between group companies. Silverstreet BV pays income tax to the Dutch tax authorities while Silverstreet Malaysia pays to the Malaysian tax authorities. Both tax authorities have rules regarding transfer pricing that Silverstreet must comply with so that both countries receive tax income.

Added Tim, “My goal is to define and implement intercompany transfer pricing procedures and documentation that will comply with accepted (tax) standards in both Malaysia and the Netherlands.”

But it’s not all work and no fun for Tim, who is enjoying a multitude of things to see and do as well as unique experiences during his stay here.

“I really enjoy working for Silverstreet. The company has an informal atmosphere where everybody is appreciated. We are working with ten different nationalities at Silverstreet which makes it more fun and interesting. I also really enjoy living here. Recently we went to the Malaysia vs. Indonesia football match with some other Dutch interns. It was a crazy experience, there were 80,000 people and we were the only foreigners. When we arrived in the stadium we received a standing ovation from all the Malaysian supporters, everybody was giving us high fives when we walked down. It looked like we were the heroes instead of the players and this is just one example of the hospitality of Malaysians,” said Tim.

Also afforded the opportunity to travel, Tim says, “There are so many places to go in Asia! Last weekend I went surfing in the Philippines. The sun, waves and life style experiences I think can only be found in Asia. As you can notice, I enjoy the life here and would recommend everybody to do their internship in KL as well!”

EU / EUMCCIPENANG SHARES ITS WARM HOSPITALITY WITH EU

REPRESENTATIVES FOR SECOND EU - PENANG DAY

Ambassadors and Chargés d’Affaires from 19 European Union diplomatic missions visited the state of Penang on 21 Novem-ber for the second EU-Penang Day. The event follows the successful EU Day held in the state in June 2011.

The second EU-Penang Day started with a ‘Trade and Investment Forum’ that was attended by some 100 diplomatic, busi-ness and media representatives. The forum featured presentations on the investment opportunities in Penang by Invest Penang chairman Dato’ Simon Wong and on the EU’s economic outlook by H.E. Luc Vande-bon, the new EU Head of Delegation.

This was followed by a session on the suc-cess of green technology initiatives in the

Speaking at the German Embassy’s reception to commemorate the International Human Rights Day and Nobel Peace Prize award, EU Head of Delegation Luc Vandebon said: “Rather than rest on our laurels, we should take the award as a boost to step up our engagement for lasting peace and prosperity. We need to make Europe’s mission for peace a forward-looking one. The Nobel Peace Prize puts new wind in our sails to reach out and help those who do not enjoy the same freedoms as we do.”

Also on the same day, the EU Delegation, Bar Council and SUHAKAM held a Pleadings Competition for law faculty students at the Parliament of Malaysia. Twelve finalists from six local universities presented their cases on whether the death penalty was compatible with international human rights norms and principles. The Competition was won by the defence team from the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM).

European Union’s Member States led by Danish Ambassador H.E. Nicolai Ruge and Deputy British High Commissioner Mr Ray Kyles.

Other highlights of the EU-Penang Day in-cluded a luncheon with the State Govern-ment, a ‘USM-EU Ambassadors Dialogue’, a EU versus Penang friendly futsal match and the Penang opening launch of the Eu-ropean Union Film Festival.

AN INSIDE LOOK

AN INSIDE LOOK:

RESQTEC ZUMRO - JAN - PIETER MAARSCHALK

RESQTEC is a leading manufacturer in the rescue industry. They develop, manu-facture and market high performance res-cue solutions. Major products consist of hydraulic and pneumatic rescue systems from cutters, spreaders, rams and lifting bags. Through their own Research & De-velopment departments and manufacturing plants, their products are used around the world by fire fighters, police, military and smart teams amongst others.

Over the past four decades, RESQTEC has also positioned themselves to become a ser-vice–oriented company, delivering rescue equipment, training, service and support in their four fields of expertise: Heavy Rescue, USAR, Extrication and Aircraft Recovery. They are responsible for major innovations like the NT lifting bag, R2s Aircraft Re-covery System and the Q1 confined space cutter. All RESQTEC products are similar in the way that they are all dedicated to saving lives or protecting citizens. During the development process, they strive to al-ways provide high performance and smart solutions by making use of the latest tech-nologies in materials and engineering.

Despite his hectic schedule, RESQTEC CEO Jan–Pieter Maarschalk agreed to this interview with MDBC recently. Hailing from Haarlem but living in Amsterdam, Jan–Pieter, the son of RESQTEC founder Axel Maarschalk, joined the company in 2005 and was appointed to CEO in 2011. Prior to joining RESQTEC, Jan–Pieter

worked for Sara Lee and in his family’s other businesses throughout the world.

MDBC: What made you decide to come to Malaysia and start RESQTEC here?Jan–Pieter: My father had the foresight to see Malaysia was the ideal country. Be-sides growing economically itself, giving opportunities for a company like ours (we are seen as an infrastructure company), it is ideal from a sales and manufactur-ing standpoint. Asia is logically a grow-ing area for us and we decided to have a local presence, something our competitors do not have. The multicultural heritage makes it easy to find people that speak dif-ferent languages which enables us to easily communicate with China, Indonesia and all English speaking countries.

MDBC: Were there any major challenges during this set up period?Jan–Pieter: I wouldn’t say any major challenges. It did take a while to get the licenses required and it was not always a very transparent process, but that can hap-pen in many other countries as well. Find-ing the right suppliers takes time, it took a while before we could source enough goods from Malaysia. Communication with Eu-ropean counterparts was sometimes dif-ficult as I believe it is important for col-leagues to have met each other before they cooperate. Also, the issue of quality versus speed. We found that Malaysians tend to focus on speed of production whereas we would rather have a good quality product

which takes a little longer to produce than a not so good product which is produced very quickly.

MDBC: You worked at different companies and industries prior to joining RESQTEC. Were there any lessons learned during that time that have since served you well in your new role as CEO here?Jan–Pieter: Yes, very much so. I would say that it all helped me in my job now. At Sara Lee I did product development and brand management. We worked with a lot of design and engineering companies and from that I learned to mix commerce and engineering, to bring that balance. It’s part of the reason why we won 6 design awards. Importantly, I learned that the form of a product and what it communicates visu-ally is just as important as the technical capabilities of a product. Technologically, your product may be the best there is, but if consumers have no confidence in its re-liability, strength and performance based on the visual aspect of the product, then it has no value. We are visual people so good product development must align the technical and visual aspect equally. If the visual aspect doesn’t match with the con-sumer’s perception of what the product should convey, then the conclusion is that the customer doesn’t believe the product can do its job.

MDBC: RESQTEC does a lot of special procurement as it works very closely with government entities due to the (rescue) products that it supplies. Do you have any advice for others on procurement?Jan–Pieter: With any government it is sometimes hard to see what their processes

Page 35: MDBCONNECTS 2012 - 4

35 MDBCONNECTS · 4TH ISSUE 2012

AN INSIDE LOOK

are (for procurement choices). It’s very easy to jump to conclusions sometimes be-cause we may only see part of the picture. I’d suggest that first, it’s best to get advice. Use the resources that are available to you, resources like MDBC, or MIDA or the Em-bassy’s Trade Department to gain a better understanding of how the country works instead of making any assumptions. Each country has their own way of doing things. Don’t act too quickly, do your research first. Also, appoint an agent. RESQTEC uses local agents as we have seen that they know how things work in their countries.

MDBC: Do you find niche marketing to be very different from that of regular indus-tries? What are the key differences?Jan-Pieter: Yes, there are differences. One of the key differences is the way you use media. You’re not going to reach your tar-get audience through traditional media in niche marketing. We find that face to face interactions tend to be more effective. We rely much more on our dealers having that direct, people to people connection to reach the customer.

MDBC: Niche players tend to have a deep understanding of their customers and their needs, as well as have an ability to stay engaged with those customers. What are some tips / lessons that you can share with others that you have learned along the way?Jan–Pieter: The first thing to understand is that things don’t happen behind your computer so don’t hide behind your desk. The real world is outside, get your ideas from there and go meet the people. We demonstrate our products to our custom-ers, the sales guys are constantly in con-tact with our customers. The leadership / management should also go on trips, talk to the customers themselves, get to know them. You’ve got to lead from the front lines whenever possible. You’ve also got to innovate. Innovation, especially product innovation is the capitalizer of everything. You need to constantly innovate, need to have good innovations.

MDBC: How do you manage organization-al politics, conflicting personalities, inter-est and views?Jan–Pieter: The Dutch are quite flexible which makes it easier I think. We have to watch our directness as we may not mean it the wrong way, but the receiver may view it that way. Out of personal experience, I feel that Malaysians may not always like our way of working initially, but they are inter-ested as well, eager to lean other ways of doing things. For example, Europeans are used to an open office environment. When we decided to do the same thing here, most were strongly against it, but after a while

“Don’t hide behind your desk. The real world is outside, get your ideas from there,

and go meet people.”

everybody got used to it and didn’t want to change back.

MDBC: If someone were to ask you, “What is your most valuable asset?” what would your answer be?Jan-Pieter: My most valuable asset is defi-nitely the people. Having the right people. If you don’t have the right people, you’re lost. Those people are the ones that make your company succeed. In the end it boils down to having the right people because all of your ideas, being able to implement things successfully, etc., they all come from having the right people.

MDBC: One of the common traits of a suc-cessful niche business is good human re-source policies and labor relations. How has RESQTEC handled this?Jan–Pieter: The retention of production co–workers can be an issue. If a worker can get a little more money elsewhere, they tend to switch easily and in our case this can be an issue because we need to educate our people intensively. This wasn’t really unexpected; the loyalty (or lack thereof) of employees among the production line is something that we can see is a common thing in a growing economy. We try to handle it by offering a premium in our per-formance bonus structure. We also have people wanting to come back after seeing our corporate culture and respect that we have for our people. This affects others as

well and makes them think before leaving.MDBC: What do you see as the key future direction(s) for companies within your sec-tor? Where do you see your industry going?Jan-Pieter: I think innovation and modu-larity is going to be THE key direction for the industry. Rescue teams now have to be more multifunctional so it’s important to integrate tools that are multifunctional. But it cannot be a tool that does both func-tions on a mediocre level, these tools have to be the best at all functions they are sup-posed to carry out. No matter what they are utilized for, performance is key.

MDBC: What do you think are the three most important characteristics of a suc-cessful entrepreneur? Jan-Pieter: Three characteristics... Having no ego definitely. It allows you to decen-tralize things and share the responsibility. If you’re self confident then you can give the people around you responsibility and if they succeed at what you’ve tasked them with you should be happy. This means that sharing is important because if you cannot share then you cannot multiply, grow.

Thinking is also important. Henry Ford (who started the Ford Motor Company) once hired a supply chain expert to come in and review his factory to see if things were running efficiently. After going through and observing the factory the expert came back to Mr. Ford and said that everyone in the factory was busy except one individual. Mr. Ford said, “Yes, me. Somebody has to do the thinking.” Somebody has to do the thinking and come up with the strategy that will lead the organization forward and to ever greater success. And as one last thing, motivate. I think its important that leaders motivate the team. As Mr. Ford said, “Enthusiasm is the yeast that makes your hopes shine to the stars. Enthusiasm is the sparkle in your eyes, the swing in your gait. The grip of your hand, the irre-sistible surge of will and energy to execute your ideas.”

GREEN BOARD

Cleaning up Shipping - Green Shipping with Groot Ship DesignShipping is perhaps the most international of the world’s industries, serving more than 90% of global trade. Because of their huge size, ships are an efficient way to move goods but the industry is so vast that the amount of carbon they emit exceeds that of all the world’s aircrafts. If the global fleet were a single country, its emissions would rank seventh in the world.

Financially, the shipping industry is suffering from overcapacity and high oil prices. With the realities of increasing (and very often volatile) oil prices, climate change and pollution setting in, ship-owners and operators these days are changing their tune.

These days many shipping lines believe that bigger is better, not just for the shipping company’s bottom line, but also for the environment. The bigger the ship, the lower the use of fuel per cargo ton mile. (Fuel consumption is one of the biggest financial costs to shipping companies.) Reducing the speed that these ships normally travel at has a positive impact on improving fuel consumption. Besides lower speed, new ships are now utilizing other fuel saving and potentially environmentally friendly features, such as a redesigned bow and special paint to reduce friction through water.

Groot Ship Design is a dynamic design and engineering company with a hands - on mentality typical of the Dutch shipbuilding industry. The designs of Groot Ship Design are made in close cooperation with the client, Groot Ship Design offers its services and designs to the ship owner or shipyard. Offering designs for all types of cargo vessels: General cargo, Container, RoRo’s and Tankers, they also have experience with special types of vessels like Livestock carriers, Dredgers, Heavy lift and Offshore Cargo vessels.

For most of the designs, Groot Ship Design offers their Groot Cross - Bow®. The foreship with a vertical bow and reversed forecastle was developed inhouse and tested at the HSVA ice - tank in Hamburg, together with an optimised hull shape, if necessary in combination with a ducted propeller, offers a huge benefit in bringing down the installed propulsion

power. In comparison with ships the same size the Groot Cross - Bow® allows the installation of a significantally smaller main enginge, resulting in lower fuel consumption, lower emissions and a smoother ride in heavy weather.

The Groot Cross-Bow® has been incorporated into vessels such as the Vectis Falcon for client Carisbrooke Shipping and UAL Africa for Bodewes Shipyards, to minimize vessel pitching and reduce the load fluctuations on machinery and speed loss in heavy weather, all of which results in less wasted energy and fuel consumption. The high bow also cuts down on the amount of water spray on deck in heavy weather.

Groot Ship Design is also working with Veka - Group, developing new small type LNG tankers which can also be used as bunker ships. The designs are destined for short sea trips and / or coastal services. The tankers sails almost completely on the ‘boil off’ of the load and is 100% emission-free concerning NOx and SOx emissions.

New technology for the storage and use of LNG as fuel for the propulsion engines was used for this project. The use of cryogene LNG tanks makes it possible to sail the vessel for a significant part on the ‘boil off’ (the gas that is released by keeping the load on the correct temperature) availability, which explains the term bi-fuel.

Techniques and Designs such as the above

The Vectis Falcon, one of four 8500 DWT sister vessels (Vectis Eagle, Falcon, Harrier and Osprey) for Carisbrooke Shipping incor-porating a number of innovative features, including the distinctive Groot Cross-Bow, presented with Energy Efficient Design Index

(EEDI) certificates by Germanischer Lloyd (GL) recently.

offered by Groot Ship Design makes vessels more efficient are increasingly important in the shipping industry as there is a growing awareness in the industry that it needs to take a long view on its environmental impact.

Shipping’s international regulator, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) knows that the enhancement of a sustainable environmental policy for the shipping industry is a high profile matter. The heightened concern at the impact of global shipping activities on the environment has given further impetus to efforts by the IMO to increase awareness, promote corporate social responsibility by the industry and develop sustainable and environmentally conscious means of minimizing the negative impacts from shipping.

We all need electricity. Whether it’s to light up the local football match or warm the half-time drink – it’s an essential part of powering our lives. Shell is helping to deliver natural gas to more countries than any otherenergy company. When used to generate electricity, this natural gas emits around half the CO2 of coal. It’s oneof the most abundant sources of energy available today and, with our continued innovation, it could provide us with cleaner energy for around the next 250 years. And it’s one of a number of different sources of energywe’re investing in to power and sustain our lives today and into the future. Let’s broaden the world’s energy mix.
