This fund is used to further our stated goals by financing special projects,

endowments and contributions to

worthy patriotic endeavors. We have decided once again, to have a “Silent

Auction” during our annual George

Washington Luncheon on February 18, 2017 to benefit the Maryland 400

Fund.

Please consider donating an item to be

auctioned. Some auction ideas are: gift

certificates; DAR china; patriotic memorabilia; wine; gift or theme

baskets; books; SAR items; any other

item you may have around the house that is in good condition and you are ready to

part with for a good cause. Keep in mind

that all items to be auctioned will go to the highest bidder. It may not, however,

bring the price that you may feel it

should. We need at any items. Last year we had over 40 items!

If you decide to donate an item, please

call or email me and let me know what the item is. Then simply bring it with

you to the luncheon.

If you think of anything to bring at the last minute just bring that along as well.

The following picture was taken in 1997 at our Baltimore Congress (twenty

years ago this June) in the Maryland Hospitality room at the Hyatt in

Baltimore. John Vandegriff, Ray Zimmerman, d. 1/2011, Lee Kielman, d.

12/2004 and Barry McKown. Barry is wearing a Polish tea shirt, which he

got in Poland in 1995 when he was there for the 50th anniversary of VE

Day. It says "I made my first million in Poland" because their Zloty had

been revalued from 1000 old zlotys for one new zloty.

Little Meadows Becomes Partner in Vietnam War Commemoration

The Little Meadows Chapter has become a Commemorative Partner of the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration. James J Jackson, Office of the Secretary of Defense director of The United States of America Vietnam Commemoration congratulated the Chapter on volunteering to become a Commemorative Partner and the chapter’s willingness to assist the nation in properly thanking and honoring our Vietnam Veterans and their families.

The Chapter will now work to thank and honor veterans of the Vietnam War, including personnel who were held as prisoners of war (POW), or listed as missing in action (MIA), for their service and sacrifice on behalf of the United States and to thank and honor the families of these veterans with a Lapel Pin and Certificate.

The four Members of the Little Meadows Chapter that will be entrusted with this mission are; Mike Crow, David Frederick Sr., Paul Parish and myself. All four members have received their War Service Metal with the Vietnam Bar and are listed in The SAR Veterans Bugle, Vietnam War Veterans Corps.

Presidents Message Compatriots,

There are several events coming up. The first is the George Washington Luncheon on Feb 18. I hope to see many of you there.

The next event is the opening of the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. “States will be recognized in the museum lobby with informational displays about each state’s Revolutionary War history, as well as tourism and heritage organizations. Each day will begin

with a midday ceremony honoring the featured state with welcoming remarks and presentation of the state flag, followed by an Honor Guard procession along the Grand Corridor to the outdoor re-created Continental Army encampment’s artillery amphitheater for a flag-raising ceremony and artillery salute.” On March 29th Maryland will be honored. I would like to see many of you there and please wear the SAR ribbon or insignia, if you have a Maryland tie wear that also. There is information at http://www.historyisfun.org/grandopening/. The CAR was one of the fund raisers for this museum.

Opening April 19th the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia. We have been asked to participate in the opening. I have asked 1st VP Don Deering to spearhead our participation. First Vice Presidents Report – Don Deering This has been a busy period for our organization and I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have put your collective shoulders to the wheel and helped move our organization forward.

Second Vice Presidents Report – James Adkins With the support of the Board of Managers and our State Officers, the Maryland State Society Sons of the American Revolution will continue the partnership with the Maryland State Archives to find and tell the story of the Maryland 400. Much work has already been accomplished through this partnership and may be found at Finding the Maryland 400 https://msamaryland400.wordpress.com/. The end result will be the publication of the biographies of those Maryland Patriots who fought and died at the Battle of Brooklyn. This

important research would not have been accomplished without the funding from our Maryland 400 Patriots' Fund. I encourage all of you to review what research has already been completed and to donate to our Maryland 400 Patriots' Fund.

Third Vice Presidents Report – Tim Mallory I’ve been busy with the Maryland 400 Fund in recent months. I coordinated and developed a new medal for the MD400 Patriots Fund recognition system (see the attached flyer to be posted to the MD400 webpage which explains the rank names, insignia pins, and contribution levels). Vendor quotes were obtained, a selection made, and a purchase order processed. A total of 100 medals and insignia pins are planned for an awards ceremony at the 2017 GW Luncheon. Approximately $5700 has been received in 2016 from 88 donors. Treasurer Gary Neal has prepared a chart which

summarizes the donors’ cumulative lifetime contributions, and their corresponding rank.

Historian – James Perry MDSSAR chapters and officers are encouraged to contact Historian James Perry (james_perry

21@verizon.net or [301] 320-1863) to arrange to transfer records for preservation in the

Society’s archives. Since 1992, we have partnered with Langsdale Library of the University of

Baltimore to serve as repository for these invaluable records of our organization. Our holdings

include items such as meeting minutes, membership applications, annual reports, photographs, and

newspaper clippings dating back to the establishment of the Society in 1889.

National Trustee – Jim Engler Here are some items from the NSSAR Fall Leadership Meeting that may be of interest to our Compatriots:

• A number of chapters and state societies met the PG;’s challenge of contributing $1,000 to the

National Youth Awards.

• Trustees voted down a move to implement the Member Module on the website as soon as possible

Trustees felt further work was needed.

• The Kings College London (KCL) Project requested and had approved a move to pay the annual

amount of this project for one time only this October as a £25,000 contribution. Usually this would

be a $38,000 contribution in the Spring. By taking advantage of the BREXIT and the resulting slip in the foreign

currency rate, SAR saves itself $6,000.

• A presentation to authorize $7,000 to complete a design for the front of the Headquarters building (where the

outreach center will be) was voted down, as it was first heard of that morning by the Project manager, PG White.

• The trustees were briefed on Education Outreach and the need for Youth Protection. As we are involved in our

programs with youth, it has been determined that we need to provide Youth Protection Training. This will be

done through the nationally known BSA on-line training.

• The Trustees approved the 2021 National Congress for Washington State. Details will be reported as they develop.

• The hotel for the National Congress next year in Knoxville, Tennessee is already 80% filled. A second hotel will be

coming on line. Details of the events expect for the Congress were presented.

• A new effort for the digitization of all SAR applications and supporting documentation is currently under

consideration, with appropriate wording regarding protection of living family. While FamilySearch.org was

originally considered, the effort will be put out as a Request for Proposal to select the right organization to do the

scanning.

If there is something you want brought up to the National Officers during the next national SAR meeting

(Spring Leadership in Louisville at the Start of March), please let me know.

The Sad Loss of Some of our Members

Compatriot Donald Edward Phillips (SGT Lawrence Everhart). Donald Edward Phillips, 81, of Hagerstown, passed away

on 14 October 2016. Born 5 January 1935 in Coldspring Township, N.Y., he was the son of George Clair Phillips and Evelyn

Lillian (Johnson) Phillips Don had been ill for four years with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), and he died peacefully at his

home. Don spent his entire 12-year education at the Randolph Center School (Randolph, N.Y). He graduated from St.

Bonaventure University, with a B.S. in physics. Don joined the Naval Ordnance Laboratory (NOL), later renamed the Naval

Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), in White Oak, Md., as a research physicist. He was the country's leading expert in underwater

weapons, war head technology and under water weapon lethality against submarines. During his 38-year tenure, he rose to

become one of the key scientific and technical leaders of the NSWC, achieving the position of Distinguished Research Physicist.

He was awarded the Navy Superior Civilian Service Award, ADPA Bronze medal and John Adolphus Dahlgren Award. He retired

from NSWC in 1997. He is survived by his wife and four children, five stepchildren, 18 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Interment was at Christ Reformed Cemetery, Middletown, MD. Donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County,

747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.

Compatriot David Gray (John Paul Jones dual member) died on 20 December 2016 at his home in Arlington, MA. He lost

his wife Laura this past April and had not been doing well since then. David was a retired Navy Captain and National Color

Guard commander many years ago, a Minuteman and a longtime friend of Maryland SAR Congress attendees. His brother Ed,

also a Minuteman lives in Missouri.

Smoot Chapter Honors Battle of Kedges Straits On 20 October 2016, over forty SAR and DAR members and guests attended a guided tour to Smith Island and the site of the famous Revolutionary War Battle of the Barges (also known as the Battle of Kedges Straits). The tour was arranged and sponsored by the Captain John Smoot Chapter of the Maryland State Society, Sons of the American Revolution. Joining the tour and providing an informative discussion of recent research done at the battle site was the Assistant State Underwater Archeologist for the Maryland Historical Trust, Troy Nowak.

After departing from the Somers Cove Marina in Crisfield, Maryland, on board the charter boat, Barbara Ann III, the group braved the foggy morning waters of the Tangier Sound and journeyed the approximately 12 miles that separates Smith Island from the mainland. Along the way, Compatriot and tour organizer, Mark Tyler, provided narration of the events leading up to the engagement.

Today, the general vicinity of the battle site is marked by the Solomon's Lump lighthouse in Kedges Straits, which sits atop a caisson in the middle of the straits. Local Smith Islander's still tell the folktale that Solomon ("Uncle Sol") Evans (1760-1852), for whom Solomon's Lump is named, always claimed that he watched the Battle of the Barges from atop a tree in his yard located near the northern tip of Smith Island.

Upon arriving at the lighthouse, the SAR tour attendees participated in a brief memorial service to honor those patriots who fought and died in Kedges Straits. Participating in the laying of wreaths and flowers over the water were members of chapters of the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution from across Maryland and Virginia. After the memorial service, the tour proceeded to the town of Ewell on Smith Island where the group was treated to a presentation by Troy Nowak of the Maryland

Historical Trust. Mr. Nowak discussed how the Trust conducted an extensive archeological survey of Kedges Straits during 2011 to ascertain if any physical evidence of the battle has survived. Because none of the ships in this battle sank, the survey team attempted to locate any evidence of objects (potentially edged weapons, firearms, cannon balls, etc.) that fell to the bottom during the battle. Using magnetometer and side scan sonar systems, the survey of the site indicated at least one location that could contain archeological objects from the battle. Further underwater exploration, involving diving archeologists, would have to be done to identify specific objects and potentially retrieve them for study and public display.

After a delicious Smith Island seafood luncheon, the tour group had time to tour the exhibits of the Smith Island Cultural Center, which included a recently conserved cannon ball recovered on the Island that is believed to be from the War of 1812. The group then returned to Crisfield after a return cruise. The weather, company and learning made for a truly remarkable experience and was enjoyed by everyone. For at least that one day, the members of the tour group could connect with our patriot ancestors in a very special, experiential way that they are not likely to forget.

to 31 December. A new year has started. Don’t wait until the end of the year to make an award. Remember, we’re

looking for every chapter to award at least one certificate, but that should not stop chapters from awarding more

than one each year.

Americanism We are finishing up the 2016 Americanism Score Sheets now ahead of the 1 March deadline for submittals to

National Headquarters. If you have donated anything during 2016 to NSSAR programs such as a Youth Program

Endowment Funds, Public Service Program Endowment Funds, Center for Advancing America's Heritage, George

Washington Endowment Fund, SAR Foundation, Friends of the Library, the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association or the

USO, please let the State Chairman know the amount and program receiving the donation. Your name will remain

strictly anonymous, but the amount will be credited in your chapter’s Score Sheet report.

Americanism Brochure Contest The deadline is rapidly approaching for this contest, geared for all students grades 6 to 8. If your Compatriots, their

neighbors, family, friends, or co-workers have children of this age, urge them to consider competing. Rules are to

nearby Gettysburg, PA. Why not consider joining compatriots from as far away as New York and hear what is going

Council of Past Presidents A multi-volume handbook has been drafted by Compatriot Jim Engler. The Council, as well as current state officers

and committee chairs, as well as a chapter presidents, will be asked to review and comment on them. Based on

the collected knowledge of current and past officers and chairmen, the objective of the volumes is to give helpful

information to allow those new to their offices and committees to more effectively carry out their roles from the

beginning. For chapters, the associated volume will help explain the variety of programs and activities that will help

them become more active.

George Washington Luncheon We will be holding a raffle for a print of the painting “Gen. William Smallwood's Regiment Leaving Annapolis”.

MDSSAR is honored to can raffle this rare 20x30 print. This painting can only be seen at the Fifth Regiment Armory

in Baltimore. 100 tickets must o be sold before the raffle drawing of the reproduction. Tickets are $5.00 ea. or 5 for

$20.00.

MD 400 Project To date, there are over 225 biographies of Maryland soldiers published online, fully sourced and including many

images of original records. Of these biographies, more than 150 were completed during periods of SAR sponsorship,

either by SAR funded individuals or other partner organizations such as Washington College. A twenty-page report

of the complete status can be downloaded from the MDSSAR website archives.

Nominating Committee* The Nominating Committee has developed a slate of candidates for the 2017-2018 SAR year. The report was

presented at the January Board of Managers Meeting. See the list reported in this newsletter.

Patriots’ Ball The Patriots Ball 2016 was a great success. Presidents of several national societies were in attendance including

the CAR National President Connor Jackson and SAR J. Michael Tomme etc.

ROTC/Outstanding Citizenship Awards

The main points of discussion in this report are a continuation of the chapter points of contact communication with the local high schools JROTC senior military instructors. College ROTC PMS and the guidance counselors at the participating schools for the outstanding citizenship awards to keep the schools interested in the programs we offer to recognize their outstanding students. Holidays are over so we begin to go into the final stretch in the awards program season.

Be available to answer questions. Provide guidance for the submission of award nominations to the chapters for approval, the enhanced JROTC program with the essay for the cadet to write and submit with the nomination packet to the chapter for judging and the chapter winners forwarded to me by 7 April 2017 for state judging so I can forward the state winner to national by 2 May 2017. I will be sending the 2017 guidance for the enhanced program for 2017 in the very near future.

At the college level visiting the PMSs to secure the nominations from the PMS must be a junior and must have the endorsement and approval of the PMS. These can be submitted in writing to the local chapter. We no longer give a monetary award at the college level. Naturally the awards should be presented at an appropriate awards ceremony where possible to be presented by the chapter POC or designated individual.

All chapters participating in these award programs must send to me their award material requirements so I can have them ready to distribute at the George Washington Birthday Luncheon. My email address is gs2nd@aol.com. Always available for individual guidance.

Eagle Scout Award Winners Announced

The Eagle Scout Committee is pleased to announce the selection of Eagle Scout Nathan Purnell of Baltimore County as the MDSSAR Eagle Scout of the Year for 2016. Nathan will receive his trophy and $500 award at the GW Luncheon. The runner-up, Eagle Scout Matthew Kimball of Montgomery County will receive $250.

On 15-Aug-2016, the chapter hosted its first “social meeting”. The objective was to partner with various private and government organizations in the county to broaden the outreach of the SAR. This event brought together many groups in Frederick County and was highlighted by the presence of Maryland Lt. Governor, Boyd K. Rutherford. The chapter presented four public safety awards at its September meeting, honoring outstanding first responders from police fire, and EMS in Montgomery County. The SAR Emergency Medical Services Commendation Medal was awarded to Fire/Rescue Chief Edward G. “Ned” Sherburne of the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad. The SAR Fire Safety Commendation Medal was awarded to Emilie B. K. Crown, Program Manager of Montgomery County’s Child Passenger Safety Program. The SAR Law Enforcement Commendation Award was presented to Police Officers Cody Fields and Brian Nesbitt, both from the County’s Third District based in Silver Spring, who rescued an unconscious man from a burning car on the Capitol Beltway.

Chapter President James Perry, with assistance from past President Michael Saunders, conducted the installation ceremony for two new compatriots, John Stohlman and Bill Wilson, at the September meeting.

The Chapter also presented a Flag Certificate to the City of Takoma Park. Ms. Suzanne Ludlow, City Manager, accepted on behalf of the City.

Partnering with Children of the American Revolution and Daughters of the American Revolution was the theme of the chapter’s December 2016 meeting. Sally Majewski, Senior President of the Maryland Society Children of the American Revolution, spoke about the activities of the MDSCAR, including their “Heroes for Heroes” project which raises funds to train service dogs for injured and disabled veterans. Ark and Dove Society President Jonathan Klein provided an update on the activities of the Society. The General William Smallwood Chapter has donated $50 to MDSCAR and $75 to both the Ark and Dove Society and the Hungerford Resolves Society. The chapter also provided a $125 donation towards a DAR essay contest’s $500 award. The essay contest is co-sponsored with Towson University and encourages research into American Revolution and Maryland’s role.

Christian Ardinger The Boonsboro Washington Monument celebration for July 4 weekend 2017 is still in the planning stages. This is a re-enactment of the original monument dedication ceremony. The monument was recently repaired after a damaging lightning strike. We have requested assistance from the state color guard for a musket firing and Frederick Town Fife and Drum for music.

Westminster

Westminster had a busy fall:

The Chapter drafted and could get the Carroll County Commissions to issue a Proclamation for Constitution Week.

The Chapter held its first Constitution Week Program, at which a County Commissioner spoke on the need for vigilance in protecting ones Constitutional rights. Three new Compatriots were inducted at this program by State President William Smithson.

October saw the Patriot Grave marking at St. Mary’s Lutheran Cemetery, Silver Run, MD, for Patriot John Yingling Sr.

The chapter elected new officers at its Fall meeting in November and inducted three additional new members. Planning for 2017 was also carried out

The Chapter presented a Flag Certificate to Chick-fil-A Eldersburg in December

The chapter has a logo competition that will end in February 2017.

John Hanson John Hanson chapter SAR and Harmony Hall chapter DAR conducted the Law Enforcement Award Ceremony on 20 Nov 2016. Awards were presented to one Prince Georges County Police officer and one Park Police Officer for bravery in the line of duty. Douglas Stuart SAR and Lynn Rainey DAR chapter presidents made the presentations. John Eager Howard Chapter

The Col. John Eager Howard Chapter kicked off its new year with a successful Chapter Meeting with the Thomas Johnsons Society CAR participating too. In addition the CAR SAR Medal of Appreciation was presented to 4 term Thomas Johnson Society President Kayleigh Gott and Chapter Medal of Distinction was presented to William F. Hoffman for his tremendous community service work with the SAR and Scouts. New Officers were elected. After the meeting the Chapter held a luncheon and fun History Trivia contest with the children of the CAR and handed out prizes. All the children learned some new American Revolutionary and Maryland facts.

Col. Nicholas Ruxton Moore Little Meadows The Col. Nicholas Ruxton Moore Chapter has now installed a new SAR Patriot grave marker on Patriot Lt. John Hillen (III) located in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Towson MD. John Hillen had a colorful career - not only serving in the American Revolution but also in the War of 1812.

A Flag Certificate along with a cased flag was presented to Mr. Buddy Dijvis, Woodmen of the World Chapter #6, of Cumberland, MD by our Flag Awards Chairman Compatriot Paul Parish. Ansel G. Shircliffe was presented with the Meritorious Achievement Medal and Certificate along with a Past Presidents Gavel for his service as President of our chapter during the year 2015. The Chapter approved a donation and sent a check to the Town of Friendsville, MD for a Veterans Memorial they plan to erect in the near future. The Memorial will recognize all Veterans and feature a six sided Granite Memorial to honor the six Vietnam Veterans that were Killed In Action, along with a memorial wall.

C.A.R. Activities

The Maryland State Society has become a major donor to the Maryland State Society. The Friday night Carnival and

Game night that helps the kids socialize before their big meeting on Saturday and a trip to the Benjamin Banneker

Historic Park has been completed paid for by the MDSSAR. Many Chapters also have contributed to the event as

requested by the State President. Members may help this year’s President Project Heroes for Heroes – raising funds

for Hero Dogs Inc which trains service dogs for work with veterans, by buying the Patriotic Sun catchers for $15.
