Bees, bees, glorious bees. Love them or hate them, we can’t live without them. They’re vital to the environment and our food.

Community Garden, Martineau Gardens in Edgbaston actively encourage bees to the Gardens to help with the pollination RI IUXLWYHJHWDEOHVDQGÁRZHULQJSODQWV

The Gardens have a cluster of traditional bee hives in the woodland area which you can observe. You may even meet the Gardens’ bee keeper John Gale tending the bees.

Pictured here, John inspects the bees after a month of harsh weather. The smoker device he is using encourages the bees to JRUJHRQKRQH\DÁLJKWUHVSRQVHWRVPRNHwhich makes them drowsy and easier for the bee keeper to lift out the combs.

By September, John will be extracting honey from the combs and preparing it for display the Birmingham & District Beekeepers Association annual Honey 6KRZKRVWHGKHUH6HSWHPEHU

To LetBeing a landlord or a tenant are both fraught with potential pitfalls and sometimes the only thing to do is to turn to the experts.

In this issue’s ‘meet the team at Tyndallwoods’ feature we meet Julie Russell, Solicitor Partner who specialises in property litigation, dealing with all types of disputes that relate to land ownership or occupation.

Julie acts for a variety of clients, including commercial landlords and tenants; residential landlords and long leaseholders, and some social landlords. She therefore sees both sides of the story and says that this helps with the advice she can give. She stresses that as often as possible disputes are resolved using mediation or arbitration, rather than court proceedings. This helps to reduce the cost and stress, as well as speeding up the process. It is also particularly useful where the parties are in a continuing relationship, such as that of landlord and tenant.

As Julie sees it, the main issues faced by commercial tenants in today’s High Street include rental affordability and costly repair and maintenance of buildings. In some cases she has helped her clients to secure rental reductions and rent free periods as part of a lease renewal procedure. On the other hand, the concerns commercial landlords face in the current economy include rent not being paid and tenants going into administration. In both these situations speed and understanding your options is of the essence. The faster a landlord acts the less money that will be lost.

With regard to residential landlords, the law often seems on the side of the tenant, so landlords need to follow it to the letter and if they make even a tiny error it can set the case back by months; during which time they are unlikely to be receiving rental income. Seeking professional help at the very beginning often pays dividends in the long run.

Julie will always look at her clients’ problems on DQLQGLYLGXDOEDVLVDQGKHOSWKHPWRÀQGWKHPRVWpractical and economical way of sorting them out.

For more information or to make an appointment you can call Julie on 0121 693 2222

Stage hypnotism is a form of entertainment that often humiliates its subjects to get a laugh and understandably makes most of us fear participation. But why do people fear clinical hypnotherapy? Local hypnotherapist Jan Tween thinks it is to do with risk: both financial and emotional.

Financial Risk

Clinical hypnotherapy is not a cheap option, VRDVVHVVLQJWKHULVNVÀUVWEHIRUHFRPPLWWLQJyourself to a particular therapist is prudent.

Firstly, check the therapist is a member of a nationally recognised hypnotherapy association as this means they have up-to-date professional indemnity insurance. Secondly, see if the hypnotherapist has a well designed website including a photo of them. Do they look friendly and approachable? Would you want to conduct EXVLQHVVZLWKWKHP"7KLUGO\EULHÁ\WDONWKURXJKyour issue with them either by phone or at face to face consultation before committing any funds.

Emotional Risk

This is possibly a more important factor than ÀQDQFLDOULVN)LUVWO\KDYLQJWUXVWLQ\RXUWKHUDSLVWis imperative as you need to talk about your LVVXHVLQFRQÀGHQFH6HFRQGO\KDYLQJDVVXUDQFHthat the therapist is competent and experienced enough to deal with any emotional issues that are brought to light during the therapeutic session. Thirdly, that rapport is achievable between you so you can enjoy a good therapeutic relationship without fear of judgement or rejection.

Emotional risks can be assessed by participating in a free, face to face consultation.

Peace of mind

With the risk assessment done, all that’s left to do is resolve your problems.

Issues covered: phobias, weight loss, smoking cessation, anxiety, stress, IBS symptom relief, pain PDQDJHPHQWVHOIHVWHHPFRQÀGHQFHEXLOGLQJinsomnia, relationship issues and many more.

Time To Read Together – a special community reading event for local familiesLocal Kumon Instructor Vivienne Stiles from the Harborne Study Centre hosted a special community reading event on Saturday 9 March to celebrate World Book Day, which took place on 7 March 2013.

World Book Day is a global celebration of authors, reading and books; a dedicated day each year when children throughout the world share the joys of picking up a book and losing themselves in the tales of their favourite characters.

The Harborne study centre was particularly passionate about celebrating this event as the Kumon English programme aims to nurture a life-long habit of reading for education and enjoyment. Reading skills are critical for children’s development, and consecutive studies have shown a link between competency in reading and overall attainment.

The Time To Read Together event was a fun opportunity to join local families in reading magical tales, sharing favourite stories and enjoying the ZHDOWKRI EHQHÀWVWKDWFRPHIURPUHDGLQJDERRN

7KHIXQÀOOHGIUHHHYHQWLQFOXGHGDYLVLWIURPstory-teller, Catriona Hetherington who recited poetry and exciting stories. All children were asked to bring along their favourite book so we could read together in small groups and really appreciate the magic of reading. We held our own creative writing competition so attendees could use the event to inspire them in composing their own stories and we also had one of our

own Kumon students, Soraya Sharma read an extract from her own published ‘My First Story’.

Vivienne Stiles was delighted to be hosting this special community event. She explains: “The enjoyment of reading is a critical element in the development of each and every child’s progress towards achieving their full potential in life. Regardless of background or future aspirations each and every one of us can read books and enrich our own lives and the lives of those around us. The event on Saturday gave us all the opportunity to share the books which we have enjoyed with others and broaden our own knowledge and understanding of literature in the process.”

One of our parents said “You only have to look at the children’s faces to know they really enjoyed themselves.”

We would like to say a big thank you to all of our Kumon parents and our students, their family and friends who took part in this event and made it an exciting and fun day to be part of.

Supporting Acorn Children's Hospice

Acorns Children’s Hospice provides holistic, specialised care to children and young people with life limiting and life threatening conditions (which means they are not likely to reach adulthood). The charity also supports the family at every stage of their child’s life and beyond into bereavement.

In 2012, TLC Lottery raised over £130,000 for Acorns, enough to fund a physiotherapist at each of its three West Midlands hospices, one of which is located in Selly Oak in Birmingham, for one year.

Physiotherapists provide vital care for children with a range of life limiting conditions. They use different techniques to assist with pain management and movement, and help with muscle, joint, bone, soft tissue or respiratory problems.

Physiotherapists also give the children therapy sessions in the hydrotherapy pool. Hydrotherapy is a relaxing and therapeutic experience for a child, and can improve both their mental and physical wellbeing. The warm water helps ease stiff muscles and joints, actively reduces pain and offers an otherwise impossible sense of freedom and movement.

Bugs, Bees, Plants & Trees Thriveat WinterbourneThe Easter holidays may be over, but that doesn’t mean that the family fun has to stop. On Saturday April 20 visit Winterbourne House and Garden for a fun filled day out in the great outdoors.

Although there are many entertaining activities going on throughout the day, including the chance to see a beehive at work, the main message of the day is caring about conservation; as Marketing manager Anna Williams explains, ‘It’s

really important to be aware of our role in nature, and how we can protect it.’

‘Hopefully we can make people more aware of the environment and how we can conserve natural Birmingham.’

This event runs from 11am – 5pm, with prices being £6 for adults and £5 for concessions, with access to all events on the day included in the price. Please note that booking is not required for this event.
