Dear Neighbours,

Welcome to your January / February issue of My Edgbaston.

Happy New Year to you... and a happy new name for us! As this booklet has evolved into more of a community magazine than a directory I thought it high time we had a new name to match. So My Edgbaston it will be from now on. This name shows a pride in our local area at the same time as reflecting our warm, friendly and down to earth approach.

Hope you all like it; I would love to know what you think. Email, tweet or facebook me!

Team GB Athlete Hannah England joins School in Celebration of AchievementBritish athlete and Team GB track star Hannah England shared inspirational words of wisdom with Edgbaston High School pupils at a recent prize-giving ceremony held at the prestigious University of Birmingham.

After a busy year competing at the London Olympic Games, Hannah England took the time to address pupils, parents, staff, governors and friends at the School’s annual Speech Day ceremony. In a key note speech she shared with the audience her experiences in competing as a professional athlete as part of Team GB, learning from her mentor, double gold Olympic medallist Dame Kelly Holmes, and how she copes with the pressures of performing at such a high level.

Hannah placed great emphasis on the importance of perseverance and determination in relation to personal

goals and career aspirations, encouraging current Sixth Form pupils and last year’s returning Upper Sixth, all of whom are in their first year of university, to strive to fulfil their ambitions.

Speech Day is an annual highlight in the Edgbaston High School calendar, held to celebrate the achievements of the School’s most recent leavers. Presided over by the Rt. Hon. Sir Stephen Brown, President of Council and Dr Weeks, headmistress, the event coincided with national Remembrance Day and also served as a fitting occasion at which to remember the efforts of the country’s war heroes.

Hannah England addresses the audience in

the University of Birmingham’s Great Hall.

Helping you cope with lossIn our first of the ‘meet the team at Tyndallwoods’ series we meet Clare Martin (formerly Sillery) Associate Solicitor who specialises in wills and probate, powers of attorney and trusts.

No one likes to mention the d word (death) but this is what Clare’s work is all about.

She helps people get their affairs in order to make life easier for their loved ones after they have gone and she helps people pick up the pieces for those left behind.

Clare gets an immense amount of satisfaction from working in this area. Having suffered bereavement herself she feels she can really empathise with her clients and help them through the toughest time of their lives.

When visiting a lawyer we all expect a level of professionalism and efficiency. Clare offers this and more. She takes time to listen and get to know her clients, even to the point of remembering their birthdays and the names of their dogs.

Much of Clare’s work comes through word of mouth because clients are so happy with how she has dealt with their affairs they tell their friends all about her.

Visiting a lawyer to deal with probate is essential, but making a will can often be the

kind of thing that is put on the back burner for some time. But there comes a time when making a will becomes more urgent, like when you start a family or a business.

People are often concerned that going to a solicitor will be vastly expensive but that is not the case. Clare offers a will writing service starting at £140 which is guaranteed to be robust and comprehensive helping families avoid conflict that inevitably arises when there is ambiguity in a badly drafted will, or no will at all.

For more information or to make an appointment you can call Clare on 0121 693 2222

How to nail an interviewIn an interview you are selling yourself. You may well be up against lots of other candidates who look equally good on paper, but the interview is your chance to shine.

Edgbaston based career coach Iwan Thomas from Iwan Thomas Associates gives his thoughts on good interview technique.

He said: “If you have reached the interview stage, you have already made significant progress. Yet despite their merits, many job seekers blow the interview by making simple mistakes.”

In a 2010 USA survey, CareerBuilder.com discovered that the most common mistakes reported by recruiters were:

• Answering a cell phone or texting during the interview – 71 %

• Dressing inappropriately – 69 %

• Appearing uninterested – 69 %

• Appearing arrogant – 66 %

• Speaking negatively about a current or previous employer – 63 %

• Chewing gum – 59 %

• Not providing specific answers – 35 %

• Not asking good questions – 32 %

Iwan continued: “These are avoidable mistakes if you prepare. So if you have an interview coming up make sure you follow these simple steps:”

• Concentrate on the interview – give it all your attention (switch your phone off!)

• Dress appropriately – in something that fits, is clean and suits you. Formal usually beats informal.

• Practice your technique with someone else. Ask for comments on the impression you create.

• Prepare. Know why you want the job, and why you are a good fit. Have some questions that you can ask. Carry out some research on the employer beforehand.

• Do not run down your previous employer, however bad your experience.

Riverford Organic's recipe of the monthJerusalem artichokes and mushrooms in a bag with goat’s cheese (serves 4)By Jane Baxter, Riverford Field Kitchen Taken from the Riverford Farm Cook Book

When in doubt, put it in a bag. These earthy flavours work so well together and look quite rustic when served in their parchment bags. As always with Jerusalem artichokes – and mushrooms – a drizzle of truffle oil would make a fabulous addition.

Ingredients:

• 4 large Jerusalem artichokes, scrubbed and cut into rounds 1cm thick

• juice of 1 lemon• 4 tbsp olive oil• 1 tsp thyme leaves• 200g mushrooms, sliced• 10g dried porcini mushrooms, soaked

in 400ml boiling water for 30 mins• 2 garlic cloves, chopped• 75g goat’s cheese, crumbled• 1 tbsp chopped chives• sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method

Mix the artichokes with half the lemon juice, a tablespoon of oil and the thyme leaves, then set aside.

Sauté the fresh mushrooms quickly in 2 tbsp of the remaining oil until they are just tender. Season well and remove from the pan.

Drain the porcini, reserving the soaking water. Chop roughly and cook in the remaining tbsp of oil with the garlic for 2 mins. Add the reserved soaking liquor and simmer until reduced and quite syrupy. Add the fresh mushrooms and the remaining lemon juice and season to taste.

Spread out a large square of baking parchment. Tip the artichokes over one half of it, sprinkle the mushrooms on top and then fold over the parchment. Seal the 3 open sides by folding them over tightly, or simply use a stapler.

Place the parcel on a baking tray and bake in an oven preheated to 200°C/Gas Mark 6 for about 45 mins, until the artichokes are tender. Open the bag and sprinkle the contents with the crumbled goat’s cheese and chives.

Year of Good WillIn 2013 Edgbaston-based Tyndallwoods Solicitors are helping to support Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice in promoting their legacy initiative ‘Year of Good Will’.

The Hospice helps people with a terminal illness enjoy the best quality of life possible and ensure their loved ones are supported for as long as they need.

Since opening in 1979 the Hospice has helped over 30,000 patients, their families and carers, through difficult times. It is open all day, every day of the year and covers the whole of the city as well as the borough of Sandwell, which includes some of the most deprived areas in the country.

The Hospice comprises of a twenty-five bed In-Patient Unit, a family flat, a Day Hospice and a Community Palliative

Care Team, visiting patients in their own homes.

Judy Dyke of Tyndallwoods said: “At this time of year are all considering worthy New Year resolutions and I would ask you to consider 2013 as your ‘Year of Good Will’ by making or updating your Will and supporting Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice by leaving a legacy to them.”

Two Carls for the price of one

One of the great local fundraising successes here in Birmingham is TLC Lottery which last year celebrated the 15th Anniversary of its first draw.

The Lottery is a joint fundraising venture between Three Local Charities (TLC) – Acorns Children’s Hospice, Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice and Focus Birmingham.

Lottery Manager Carl Bayliss was recently a guest on Carl Chinn’s BBC WM 95.6 programme.

In 2012, TLC raised over £120,000 for each of the three charities and Carl Chinn asked “what difference has this made for the charities?”

Carl Bayliss explained that the money raised was enough to provide 4,500 hours of hospice care at Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice, all the food and catering staff at Acorns plus transport

and day care for 60 visually impaired people at Focus Birmingham.

Finally Carl Chinn asked Carl Bayliss “why should people support TLC?”

Carl Bayliss responded by saying “it’s just £1 a week, you have a chance to win £1,000 but win or lose you know that the money is going to three great good causes making a real difference to people in our community”

Following on from the programme, TLC have had many telephone and email enquiries which just shows the power of local radio in raising awareness of good causes.

A sneaky peek upstairs at Winterbourne

Fans of Winterbourne House and Garden at the University of Birmingham will soon have even more to enjoy during their visit, with a whole new floor of Edwardian exhibition rooms to explore.

The new set of rooms complement those on the ground floor, revealing more about the lives of the family who lived there: a nursery with beautiful turn of the century toys and information about the Nettlefold children, an Edwardian teenage bedroom (not an iPod in sight!) and a comparatively sparse bedroom belonging to the household’s governess.

Whilst photos of the rooms themselves are strictly forbidden until the big reveal at the end of January, you can see some close up views as a taster.

Using source photographs from a 1911 photoshoot in Country Life magazine, the long corridor on the 1st floor has been returned to its homely feel with soft furnishings and artwork on the walls.

There is also a room dedicated to the collection of Magic Lanterns at Winterbourne, with more information for visitors about this Victorian form of entertainment.

Staff at Winterbourne have had a relatively short period of time to complete the project which has included

reinstating period features such as fireplaces, flooring and decorations. Up until the end of November, rooms were still being used for conferences and meetings which was a real challenge for the hospitality team. Each day a new feature has ‘appeared’ whether it’s a piece of furniture or a wallpapered wall. It has been a real labour of love!

Anna Williams, Marketing Manager at Winterbourne explained how the project has been undertaken through kind donations and existing budgets: ‘we felt that this stage in our development was really important, especially as so many visitors have asked about seeing the upstairs of the house, and there was never

going to be an ideal time or easy way of doing the work. We have an incredibly hard-working team and all this has been achieved alongside our day to day jobs. We can’t wait to see visitor’s faces when they see the rooms for the first time!’

Winterbourne will be open 7 days a week from Monday 28 January and admission is charged at £5 for adults and £4 for concessions. Alongside the exhibition rooms, there is a 7 acre arts and crafts garden, gift shop, tea room and gallery. The second floor continues to offer excellent meeting room space for team away days, board meetings and presentations.
