“Sanctified By The Blood”
Exodus 29 records the steps that Moses was to follow in ordaining Aaron and his sons to the priesthood. One ram was designated "the ram for the ordination" (v. 22). God commanded Moses to take that ram, "slaughter it, take some of its blood and put it on the lobes of the right ears of Aaron and his sons, on the thumbs of their right hands, and on the big toes of their right feet" (v. 20 NIV). What was the significance of applying this blood to the priests' right ears, right thumbs and right big toes? Scripture identifies the ear as the portal through which God's word enters our hearts. David described the Messiah's willingness to obey God's command with these words, "But my ears you have opened" (Psa. 40:6 NIV). The Word identifies the hands [which, without their opposable thumbs, are useless (Jud. 1:7)] as the tools for action. Solomon wrote, "Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might" (Eccl. 9:10 NIV). The feet are described in Scripture as those means of transportation that can further one on God's path or that can detour one onto the path of sinners. The Wise Man wrote, "Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil" (Prov. 4:27 NIV). Therefore, the application of blood signified the fact that the priests' ears were to set apart to hear and heed God's word; their thumbs and hands were to be used for his service; and their feet were to stay in the sacred precincts of the tabernacle and not to wander off into sin. Peter said that we are "a royal priesthood" and that we have been "sprinkled with [Jesus'] blood" (1 Pet. 2:9; 1:2 NIV). John, who also identifies us as priests (Rev. 1:6), says that it is through Jesus' blood that we triumph over the devil (Rev. 12:11). The application of the blood to the Aaronic priests foreshadowed the power that we're given through Jesus' blood to overcome the devil's influences. Jesus blood sanctifies our ears and minds to hear and heed God's word rather than the devil's lies. It set our hands apart for his service exclusively, and it holds our feet on the narrow way.
