From the Editor…

February’s Cruelty In his sprawling poem “The Waste Land,” T.S. Eliot claimed April is the cruelest month, “… mixing Memory and desire, stirring Dull roots with spring rain.” Charles McDowell, who wrote for the Richmond Times-Dispatch, said Eliot had it all wrong. McDowell argued February is the cruelest month. February is mud-caked and ice-covered. It gets a person’s hopes up, acting like spring, then blindsides that person with a sleet-loaded gust strong enough to snatch a knit cap right off a freez-ing head. February is cruel around here because it comes a long time after what has traditionally been our big fundraiser and a long time before that fundraiser comes around again. Our bills keep coming no matter what month it is. So we’re trying something new, something we need your help with. We plan to put together a cookbook. (You can read more about it on page 10.) We hope it will be more than a cookbook. We’re hoping you’ll send in recipes and the story behind them. My grandmother made the best apple pie I’ve ever tasted. If I had the recipe, I might send it in and tell how Granny always made a whole pie just for me when we came for Sunday dinner. We hope you’ll help us put together a money-making pro-ject that’s also a collection of stories about the people who live in this end of Montgomery County. Of course, if you want to keep your granny’s recipes se-cret, you can send us check instead.

To Your Good Health, by

Dr. Bob Smith

Medical care continues to change as our knowledge changes, and over the years, I have become somewhat of a medical skeptic. Much of what I thought I knew and that influenced my practice is no longer true. However, some things will never change, and those are the topics I will focus on in this column. This is the first of a series of health notes for the LINC Letter that I hope will help the reader make lifestyle decisions that will lead to a longer and happier life. By the time February rolls around, many of us are feeling the effects of having overindulged in holiday festivities. In other words, we have gained weight. Don’t feel guilty! If you lose those extra pounds gradually, your body will adapt and so will your appetite. It’s all about shrinking your fat cells. Let me explain. Fat cells control our weight because they control our brains and our cravings for nourishment. Did you know that fat cells were developed in the same way as the rest of your physical body – before you were born and during your youth growth period? When you were still in your mother’s womb, her diet and actions affected the number and consistency of your fat cells. After you were born, your nourishment and environment also determined how much fat was allowed to accumulate in those cells as you grew up. The actual number of fat cells in your body usually remains the same throughout life unless there is a pro-longed increased need for more fat storage space. So you can understand how your early life is a major determinate of future weight. But fat cells are a not bad thing. In fact, no one can sur-vive without them! They are an extremely important part of your body, and fortunately, we have the power to control their size and number. Fat cells store fat for energy that your body can use when you are not eating. But if you overeat, they take the exces-sive circulating nourishment out of your blood stream and store it as fat. Fat cells are also extremely homeostatic – meaning they want to stay the same. If they become enlarged, the body will make new fat cells to compensate. And if those distended fat cells lose some fat, they send a signal to the brain to eat more to maintain their size. That’s why the more we eat, the more our appetites increase. So you can see how losing weight and keeping it off for-ever is unavoidably a slow process. Over time, the fat cells will accommodate for the change and your appetite will decrease accordingly.

It may sound like a challenge, but I can promise you one thing from experience: If you gradually change your eating habits, as time passes, your fat cells will be satisfied, fewer fat cells will be generated, and your brain – not your stom-ach – will direct your lifestyle. In future columns, I will have some lifestyle suggestions that I hope will be beneficial. Happy New Year! George (“Bob”) Smith, Jr., M.D. is a graduate of Harvard Medical School. He served as a family physician in Shaws-ville for more than 50 years

We offer some materials that are free in our lobby, and portion-control plates at a reasonable price. Look for free food seminars throughout the year. Plus, our personal trainers can also help you learn about exercise and better food choices. Shawsville Middle School has another batch of brook trout in their tank! In a few weeks the trout will be re-leased in our area streams. The NRV Trout in the Class-room (TIC) project is looking for new places to release trout. If your farm or field has a cold stream and you can host a few classrooms out-doors on your property this spring, we would like to hear from you! We coordinate this with Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VGDIF). Call Shirley

Shorter, Regional TIC Coordinator at 540 293-8507 to volunteer! NRV TU also has a number of property improvement pro-jects to help increase stream health and habitat. Would you like to make the stream on your property better for trout? We have the finest scientists and agricultural specialists from Vir-ginia Tech, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisher-ies, and state-sponsored programs. We move trees, plant trees, help with livestock, re-build stream banks, and work with the landowner to share the expense. Please call to ar-range a site visit from our helpful volunteers! Our area has some of the finest trout streams in the coun-

try. TU works to repair, restore, and return these areas back

to nature and still respect the needs of the landowners. To-

day TU is a national organization with more than 150,000

members organized into about 400 chapters from Maine to

Montana to Alaska. Visit www.tu.org for more information.

Trick or Treating for Dale’s Place Food Pantry

Most children her age were “trick or treating” for themselves on Halloween, but 6-year-old Gracie Walker wasn't interested in getting candy or other treats for herself. Instead, she was making her way through neighborhoods in the Lafayette-Elliston area collecting canned goods for Dale's Place Food Pantry in Elliston. Her parents, Chris and Heather Walker, said this is the third year she has collected food, and it is something she herself wanted to do. Ninety pounds of food and $55 in cash were collected this year and donated to the food pantry director, Vikki McLaughlin. Quite a haul for one little lady! Right: Gracie Walker with some of what she col-

lected for Dale’s Place.

Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Achieves Re-Accreditation

On January 5, Sheriff Hank Partin, accompanied by Cap-tain Brian Wright and Sergeant Sean Rayne, accepted the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office’s fourth certificate of re-accreditation in Newport News. The office has been an accredited agency since 1999. The process of accreditation involves inspecting many aspects of the Sheriff’s Office, including vehicles, employee in-terviews, riding along with deputies, of-fice and evidence storage, and reviewing four years of documentation to ensure that all policies and procedures are being followed. Assessors look at 190 standards dur-ing the process, which is a voluntary one that the office chooses to be a part of in order to better serve the citizens of the county.

A Special Place to Stay

Christiansburg has its Hampton Inn. Blacksburg has its Hilton. Shawsville has its tool shed - behind the Inn at Fort Vause. This comfy cottage house is adorned by colonial era tools on its walls, in memory ot the building’s former occupants. You have access to the Inn as well, and can walk where George Washington and Daniel Boone once walked. Built in 1754 as an inn and tavern, the Inn is both the oldest and the first business in Shawsville, and was a major stopover on the Great Wilderness Road, housing weary travelers. Though you may not arrive by horse and carriage, this cottage is sure to bring sweet dreams of powdered wigs, Mozart and hand-dipped candles! Contact: Karen Pappas [email protected]
