Fusion Collaboration will be held at the Omni Interlocken Hotel and Resort located off Highway 36 between Denver and Boulder. Nestled against the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains, this family friendly resort provides a wealth of activities located right on the premises. Golf enthusiasts will enjoy the 27-hole championship golf course, with its striking scenery and more than 400 feet of elevation changes. The Mokora Spa offers a variety of relaxing and rejuvenating spa services. The Omni Interlocken Hotel and Resort also has two heated outdoor pools.

Other NotesThe weather in Denver in late July should offer temperatures averaging between 61° F and 90° F (low humidity but with possibility of rain). Guests are advised to bring light jackets or sweaters for often heavily air-conditioned hotel meeting rooms, restaurants and cooler evenings outdoors. Suggested attire is business casual.

Before your trip to Denver, and while you are here, drinking plenty of water is the number one way to help your body adjust easily to our higher altitude. The low humidity in Colorado keeps the air dry, like the desert, so you need about twice as much water here as you would drink at home.

Fusion 2017 - The Opportunity to CreateTimothy J. Belber, JD, AEP PPI Dean of Fusion

Tim Belber, PPI Dean of Fusion, will set the stage for your Fusion Experience through an overview of the purposeful mindset.

Purposeful Planning: What Do You Believe?L. Paul Hood, Jr. Director of Planned Giving, The University of Toledo Foundation, PPI Dean of the Cutting Edge

Prompted by a life-changing challenge from an elderly client over 20 years ago, Paul was forced to come up with his “last best advice,” advice so important that he’d deliver it on his deathbed. This involved formulating his beliefs and philosophies on estate planning and vaulted him on the road to purposeful planning. In this session, Paul will share this experience and some of his beliefs and philosophies, and he’ll conduct an exercise whereby the participants can begin to discover their own.

A View from the BenchC. Jean Stewart Retired Judge, Denver Probate Court

During 16 plus years as the presiding judge of the Denver Probate Court, Judge Stewart had an opportunity to experience first-hand the results of family conflict in the wealth transfer/estate planning area often caused by incomplete or inadequate planning, secrecy, misunderstanding, lack of trust and underlying emotional and psychological family issues. Drawing on her own experience as an estate planning specialist before being appointed to the bench in 1995, Jean Stewart will identify ways in which planners can assist families and couples in creating workable estate plans with attention to identification, resolution and avoidance of conflict. By combining

tax avoidance techniques with an appreciation of family dynamics she will offer observations on a broad planning approach that includes communication and flexibility.

Judge Stewart will also identify contemporary issues around aging and competence that are increasingly causing discord and litigation in our probate courts and ways to anticipate and ameliorate this expensive and destructive trend.

Estate Planning in a New Era: Adapt, Change or DisappearDavid R. York Esq., CPA, Fellow of the American College of Trust & Estate Counsel and Author of Entrusted

The shifting market place for estate planning and what you can do to adapt and change

For hundreds of years, the views and perspectives on estate planning and inheritance went virtually unchanged. Wealth transfer was primarily done in the form of passing on skills or land. Both were a transfer of opportunity. Parents saw inheritance as an obligation and they typically sacrificed their own lifestyle and standard of living to transfer additional assets to successive generations. Beginning with the Baby Boomer generation, these views have begun to fundamentally shift. This presentation will review the changing views on wealth in the marketplace, how these changes are affecting planning, and practical recommendations on how to adapt to the changing landscape and meet the goals and objectives of a new and different type of client.

2017 Fusion Collaboration Breakout SessionsCreating Alignment & Expectations: Good for Business, Building Relationships & Fulfilling Fiduciary Duty Rod Zeeb Heritage Design Professional™ at The Heritage Institute

Building relationship and eliminating disappointments are vital to developing a lasting, impactful client relationship. Fully understanding your client’s/prospect’s desired outcomes and helping them to identify the value TO THEM of achieving those outcomes is vital to developing a deeper client relationship. That relationship is cemented when they fully understand how what you are doing for them helps them achieve those outcomes, and you have clear, agreed upon expectations of each other.

One definition of disappointment is: “Disappointment is the difference between expectations and experience.” Disappointment can be eliminated (or at least mitigated) when you have clear, agreed upon expectations of each other, in writing, that includes how the two of you will resolve upset that will happen when one of you fails to meet an expectation and you periodically review and update those expectations.

Creating alignment and expectations also builds the foundation to fulfill your “best interest of client” fiduciary duty to your clients.

In this session, you will learn the 7-step Alignment Conversation™, the 8-step Expectations Conversation™, and how to both frame and document these conversations.

The hardest part of any journey is taking the first step. And, the hardest part of building a lasting, impactful client relationship is comfortably and effectively starting the conversation with your clients/prospects. This session will provide you with the framing, methodology, and tools to comfortably start any client/prospect conversation that is effective and will differentiate you for all of their other advisors.

How to Create a Values Aligned Investment PortfolioDebbie Huttner Impact Specialist / Financial Advisor at Colorado Capital Management

In this session, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how to align their (or their clients) investment portfolios with their deeply cherished values. The program will start with an overview of impact and socially responsible investing. We will discuss how all investment portfolios create positive and/or negative impacts depending on structure and content. This is true for both individuals, families and private family foundations. We will also discuss how Foundation investment portfolios often work counter to the philanthropic goals of the entity.

Next we will dive into a Values Game and Social Conversation through which attendees will have an experience of identifying their top priorities when it comes to social and/or environmental change. Priorities might include (1) social goals such as addressing economic inequality, working towards poverty alleviation, creating affordable housing, and/or supporting women’s empowerment, and (2) environmental goals such as land conservation, renewal energy development, reducing carbon impact, water protection and others. From here, we will outline specific asset classes and investment vehicles that can help an investor achieve a portfolio which reflects their values. Attendees will leave this session with specific tools and ideas for themselves or their clients.

Discovering The Power of Collaboration - Practical Insights on the Whys and Hows of Multi-Disciplinary CollaborationJohn “John A” Warnick Founder of the Purposeful Planning Institute and Fellow of the American College of Trust & Estate Counsel and author of the Purposeful Trust & Gift Handbook

Collaboration is more than cooperation. It requires TEC: trust, commitment, and excellence. Collaboration is a cornerstone of Fusion. And it is the stepping-stone to what we call Integrated Planning.

But there is so much resistance to Collaboration. How do we overcome that resistance and what are the steps we need to take to become Collaboration Masters? In my own professional journey I discovered the Power of Collaboration and it has profoundly altered the ways in which I serve and the satisfaction I derive from my practice. To illustrate the Power of Collaboration I’ll share those stories as well as practical suggestions for increasing the frequency and effectiveness of your collaborative efforts.

Fostering Collaborative Leadership Ian McDermott PPI Dean of Innovation & Learning, Founder and Chief Executive of International Teaching Seminars (ITS)

It’s not enough to be an expert. You want to be a trusted advisor. Trust presupposes some kind of collaborative relationship between you and the client. Trusted advisors occupy a position of influence that brings with it the authority of leadership. They are, in truth, collaborative leaders. Collaborative leaders do much more than collaborate; they create a culture of collaboration - be it within a family, a team or an organization. I’ll be exploring how to foster the mind-set that makes this possible.

Shaking the Tree Case Study & Collaborative Learning Experience

Introduction by Don Kozusko, Esq. Co-Founder of the Shaking the Tree Foundation, ACTEC Fellow and Senior Partner, Kozusko, Harris and Duncan

We are honored to present a case study learning experience through a short video presentation which features professional actors portraying a family meeting making key decisions about the future of the family enterprise and its philanthropic foundation. The Outsider brings to life many of the seminal ideas of PPI Laureate James E. (Jay) Hughes. The story raises issues about family governance, adaption and resilience, individual vs. family purpose, and strategic business planning as three generations each reach turning points in the evolution of the family business, of the family foundation, and of the family itself.

After watching Outsider we will hear from a panel of three experts: one attorney, one philanthropic consultant and a wealth management strategist. They’ll introduce video clips from Jay Hughes regarding the key issues developed in the film and provide expert commentary. We’ll then sit down in multi-disciplinary tables of eight and spend 90 minutes discussing questions which have been designed to amplify the collaborative learning experience. These questions will focus on the theme of collaboration and the intersection between the family dynamics and the structure of the business succession plan/estate plan and the family foundation. This is a unique and powerful learning experience you will not want to miss.

2017 Fusion Collaboration Breakout SessionsWednesday, July 19th

Relationship Intelligence and Effective CollaborationChris Venn The Legacy Companies

The simple fact is that the best concepts, initiatives, strategies and tactics for a wealth holder will not be implemented in the absence of meaningful relationships or effective collaboration. Relationships and Collaboration are often lumped into the “soft skills” pile. But they are not the soft stuff, they are the hard part, and they are the meaningful elements that create the opportunity for clients and advisors to generate successful solutions.

This session will decode how relationships actually work, what they require to flourish, and how to structure collaboration with wealth holders and other professional advisors.

This intermediate-level session will introduce a new perspective on how to view a relationship, and how to support the development of it. Focus will be on how to activate the full potential of a client relationship, how trust actually works (not just the trite concepts of “you should build trust”), how Collaboration differs from other forms of working with others, and most importantly, a framework for engaging other professional advisors in a collaborative approach on behalf of the wealth holder’s real needs.

2017 Fusion Collaboration Plenary SessionsThe Aha! Experience and The BridgeLarry C. Johnson Founder, The Eight Principles™

The Aha! Experience kicks off with this fast-paced, hands-on, highly interactive session quickly immersing you into the world of relational philanthropy to achieve the “Aha” moment...the moment when your path ahead becomes clear and your philanthropy ceiling disappears. You’ll be introduced to The Eight Principles of Sustainable Fundraising®, those unchanging principles which govern all philanthropy. Based upon the award-winning book of the same title by Larry Johnson, The Eight Principles™ come alive in this plenary session through group and individual exercises. The session culminates with a 60-day action plan for a positive, immediate impact on your philanthropy and fundraising.

The above session will be followed by a panel devoted to a deep dive into what it takes to create client-centric collaboration as well as a primer for Front-line Fundraisers and Development Executives on why the Purposeful Planning movement is a wave you want to catch and ride. Our panelists will include Timothy J. Belber, PPI Dean of Fusion and author of The Middle Way, John A. Warnick, Founder of the Purposeful Planning Institute and Paul Hood, Director of Planned Giving, University of Toledo.

The Aha! Experience takes place alongside regular Fusion Collaboration programming and is designed for non-profit executives and front-line fundraisers. Separate registration is required for the Aha! Experience.

Adaptive Change Management Applied to Guiding Clients Through Uncertainty and DisruptionSusan Bradley Founder, Sudden Money Institute

Who you are as an expert on the technical side of wealth management is different than who you are asked to be on the personal side. The personal side includes a client’s relationships, hopes, fears, self-esteem, and wellbeing. The personal side drive decisions- financial, family and personal. When life is changing and status quo is disrupted clients need more than technical knowledge and information. They need you to become their guide not their expert.

This session addresses the new skill set for managing change, disruption and transitions within the context of serving families and individual clients. We will review the six principles of Adaptive Change and present tools and process developed over 17 years of experience and development at the Sudden Money Institute, now known as the Financial Transitionist® Institute.

1. Get on the balcony. 2. Identify the adaptive challenge. 3. Regulate distress. 4. Maintain disciplined attention. 5. Give work back to the people. 6. Protect voices of leadership.

We live in a world where uncertainty is becoming a norm and disruptive events are no longer rare. The adaptive change skills discussed in this session translate into 21st century life skills we all need to thrive while life is changing.

Behaviorally SMART™ Wealth Mentoring - Behavioralizing Financial PlanningHugh Massie CEO, DNA Behavior International

• Charge retainer based fees and grow revenue by over 23% per year from increased referrals, retention and share of wallet.

Managing Conflict & Confidentiality in a Collaborative EnvironmentCharlie Douglas Partner, Director of Wealth Planning at Cedar Rowe Partners

This session explores the need for interdisciplinary teaming in an increasingly interdependent world. Learn more about who is the client and how best to contract with them. Discover best practices around managing the dual systems of a collaborative environment, the need for practical divergence before convergence, and pick up helpful insights concerning the compromising interplay between transparency and confidentiality.
