and what you should do when in-volved.On the other hand, Dr. Qasem Al Qasabi talked about how it all start-ed, the building of the university and how it has progressed through the years and the hospital’s support. The last notable speaker was Prof. Khaled Al-Kattan, who encouraged his stu-dents for research. A total of twenty-three medical stu-dents who were involved in research, were given the chance to share their various experiences with the audience. It was a truly gripping event! At the end of all the presentations, an award ceremony took place. In first-place, was Azhar Farooqui, a third year medi-cal student, who worked at the KFSH&RC. His topic was “Striatin is a

novel regulator of calcium homeosta-sis in cardiomyocytes”. In second-place came Ahmed Abu-Zaid, a fourth year medical student whose topic was "Renal Inflammation and Elevated Blood Pressure in a mouse model of Reduced Beta Epithelial Sodium Chan-nels”. Finally, in third-place was the only female presenter of the day, Cyn-thia Mosher, a first-year student. Cyn-thia’s topic was about “Improving Breastfeeding in Saudi Arabia: The Ba-by Friendly Hospital Initiative”. Finally, there was a raffle draw for giving out two iPads. The lucky winners were Prof. Hasan Rajab and student Anas Abudan. Alfaisal students truly shined on this great day as we look forward to next year’s event.

1st International Alzheimer’s Disease Conference With more than 26 million people worldwide suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, the WHO has ranked it as the 4th leading cause of death in developed countries* - implying the obvious need for improved awareness and action. In loving memory of HRH Prince Sultan Bin Ab-dulaziz Al Saud, the 1st International Alzhei-mer's Disease Conference was held at the KACST Conference Hall in Riyadh from the 20th to the 22nd of February. It was graciously attended by HRH Prince Ah-mad bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud, Deputy Interior Minister and honorary chairman of the Association. The aim of the conference was to raise awareness about the disease, explore the latest advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease, and to inspire national re-search. The new MSA-PR team at Alfaisal, headed by Abdullah AlShammari and Karam Hamweyah, took an active role in the recently organized Alzheimer’s convention. In addi-tion, the Saudi Alzheimer’s Disease Association (SADA), whose vision is to ensure that people suffering from Alz-heimer’s in the Kingdom are treated with respect and given the best health care possible, also helped planned the event.

The inaugural ceremony was led by HRH Prince Ahmed, Health Minister Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeah, Social Affairs Minister Yousef Al-Othaimeen and KACST President Mohammed Al-Suwaiyel. After the opening ceremony, the Saudi Alzheimer’s Association signed an agreement with Alfaisal University to become one of its strategic partners in arranging upcoming events including the launch of a new campaign that copes with Alzheimer’s patients in KSA.

In the end, the Alzheimer’s disease conference proves that Alfaisal medical students show a considerable amount of commitment and professionalism to their work and are capable of exceeding their limitations by organizing such major events!

We Won! AU VS PSU Basketball Game! I ti . With just under 20 seconds left on the clock, the Prince Sultan University (PSU) Fal-cons found themselves in another game-winning position against their rivals, the AU Royals. However, the loyal Alfaisal crowd never gave up. Cheering loudly and enthusiastically the entire night, their drive to win was converted into a strong per-formance by the Royals in the clutch. Down 69-66 with the ball in their court, Ah-med Warraich, the coach-captain of the Royals, set a play for Alfaisal’s best shoot-er; Ahmed El-Jammal—having him pop out of a screen in the post for a beautiful 3-pointer to tie the game. The Falcons were then fouled with 10 seconds remaining but missed two crucial free-throws leaving 6 seconds on the clock. Inbounding the ball from half-court after a time-out, MotazKaakarli of the Royals gave a bounce pass to Ali Rahmat-ullah who hit a quick turn-around jumper with seconds remaining to seal Alfaisal’s first ever victory. The incredible crowd swept on to the court and celebrated ener-getically with the winning team—truly a great moment in Alfaisal history.

A note to Alfaisal admin here, our team defeated a team with a full-time basketball coach, sponsored jerseys, and state-of-the-art athletic facilities. Despite Alfaisal’s failure to provide these basic necessities, the players represented the university with great zeal and made us proud. z F

In the month of February, the second-year medi-cal students participated in a mini table tennis tournament with only Dr. Khaled Al-Kattan, Dean of the College of Medicine, allowed to take part in it, aside from the students. However, the Dean wasn’t fortunate enough to progress to the next round as he was eliminated by Osama Mustafa, who went on to secure first place at the tourna-ment. There were a total of 16 players; with the first and second runner-ups being Omar Alabdal-lah and Mohammed Al Hamed, respectively. The students hope that under the new batch leader-ship, more events as such will take place.

Wushu Championship Yet again have Alfaisal students nailed a remarka-ble victory, and this time it’s in the field of martial arts! On the first of March 2012, the Alfaisal Kung Fu team, lead by 2nd year CoM student Moham-med AlSadoon, participated in their first Kung Fu tournament. The focus of this tournament was on a division of Kung Fu known as “Wushu”. Wushu can be further classified into its first branch known as Taulo, where the participants are required to perform a certain sequence of techniques whereupon the referees will grade them based upon their style, performance and accuracy. The other branch of Wushu is Sanda or Sanshou, a typical sparring match similar to the one performed in kick boxing, yet it adds the fla-vour of grabbing/tacklng techniques to its game. The team scored three gold and three bronze medals with the distribution as follows: Mohammed AlSadoon won 2 golden medals for Taulo and 1 golden medal for Sanda. Mohammed Elnour, Mubarak Almansouri, and Turki AlArjani each won 1 bronze medal for Sanda.

Saudi Arabia Chapter of the American College of Physicians The newly established Saudi Arabia Chapter of the American College of Physicians (ACP) offers various distinguished educational activities that are held regularly in Riyadh. The elected Governor of the Chap-ter, Dr. Khalid Qushmaq, Internal Medicine Consultant, has encour-aged all medical students to acquire membership in this Chapter as it has several advantages, including free membership, discount for Medical Knowledge Self-Assessment Program 2 and Essentials for Clerkship, free ACP journal club and PIER, which is an online support tool that contains more than 400 clinical scenarios with diagnosis and management. Of note, Dr. Qushmaq spoke at the 3rd Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium and encouraged all students to join the Saudi Chapter. For further information, you are kindly re-quested to send an email to Abdulhadi AlAmoudi, Associate Mem-ber ACP and Alfaisal University Representative.

MSA: Promoting Undergraduate Research; A New Committee!

The newly established undergraduate research committee supervised by the Medical Student Association (MSA) has put primary goals to achieve in its plan. One essential goal is to promote the concept of undergraduate research in the Saudi community. A significant approach that we have implemented is to pro-mote the undergraduate research through assessing, meas-uring and reporting our experience from different held ac-tivities in-campus and outside campus, and to highlight various ways and mechanisms of promoting undergraduate research that we have tried. In this context, recently, the team of undergraduate re-search committee has submitted an abstract to the 6th UAE medical students conference that to be held in Dubai from 22-23 of April, 2012. The abstract is entitled as “Promoting Undergraduate Re-search: Students’ Perception” and authored by: Abdulhadi A. AlAmoudi, Ahmed M. Abu-Zaid, Mohammed A. Shareef, Muhammed L. Anwer, Ayman M. Awad, Abdullah M. Al-shammari. Of note, also the undergraduate research com-mittee is keen to share and benefit from different institutes in Saudi Arabia by presenting its activities and listening to others’ experiences in this growing aspect.

Recently many countries have realized that more attention should be devoted to the management of health prob-lems prevailing in their communities. The existing curriculum of many medi-cal schools in Saudi Arabia follows the traditional ap-proach, which is criticized for its lack of connection with local communities. To the contrary, one of the College of Medicine (COM) strengths has been its com-munity-based curriculum, i.e., the fact that it’s re-sponsive to local communi-ty needs and expectations. The COM extends its campus into the communi-ty to identify, help define, and attempt to meet community needs. The COM’s mission is to prepare its students for meeting and responding to the changing healthcare needs and expectations of the larger Saudi Arabi-an community. This is achieved in full partnership with other healthcare pro-viders and relevant sectors in the com-munity. Considerable progress has been made to fulfill the COM mission through sev-eral courses offered by the Depart-ment of Community Medicine. Such efforts have been successful in provid-ing not only information but also ser-

vices to the local communities. For ex-ample, the Alfaisal Breast Cancer Team(ABCT) has made considerable achieve-

ments during the past two years. The idea started as an in-class community medicine research project to assess needs for breast cancer awareness in the local community. It has since grown into a community-based research and outreach project. The ABCT consisted of students, staff, faculty, and a representative from ZAH-RA Breast Cancer Association (ZAHRA). The ABCT conducted several awareness workshops in the area and was invited to two international conferences, and won top prizes. The team conducted research and pub-lished in national and international journals. Another important communi-ty project was to partner with the Na-

tional Committee for Narcotics Control (NCNC). Students and faculty visited the NCNC headquarters in Riyadh dur-

ing the Spring semester of 2012. Students met with the NCNC leadership and physician experts to learn about the prevalence of narcotics, medical and so-cial consequences of ad-diction, and their impact on our communities. We plan to continue to collaborate with the NCNC and are currently working with them to establish an awareness campaign for

Alfaisal students. Other community-based projects in-clude participation and help with or-ganizing the first International Alzhei-mer’s Disease Convention; collabora-tion with the Saudi Food and Drug Au-thority (SFDA), and launching the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) to examine BFHI implementation on breastfeeding rates in some of Riyadh's hospitals. A special thanks to Akram Nurhussen,Abdullah AlShammari, Karam Hamweyah, Cynthia Mosher, TareqAlTuhaifi, and Balaija Kanawati

Respected readers, this section entails a humble attempt at reviving and strengthening love for Allah within the very core of our hearts, thereby adorning every aspect of our lives with His Mercy and Guidance, insha’Allah. We hope to address topics we can relate to daily. Your submissions and feedback are, as always, more than welcome.

In the field of medicine, Greeks are considered to be the greatest pioneers. But history gives clear evidence that the advancement of medical science took place with the rise of Islam. As we all know, The Holy Quran, revealed 1400 years ago, describes many medical facts that have been discovered and prov-en today. The Muslims uti-lized this knowledge to their benefit and this col-umn aims to look at some examples of this. The 11th-century Iraqi sci-entist Ibn al-Haytham (Alhazen) developed a radi-cally new concept of hu-man vision against ancient Greek notions of a visual spirit emanating from the eyes. He described eye as an optical instrument with its ocular anatomy being the basis for im-age formation. Another is Ibn-Nafis, a 13th century Syrian physician who gave a clear logical description of the blood circulation in the human body. Through his dissection he

On Thursday 5th of April—also known as World Health Day, around 150 people started their run at KSAU-University of Health Sciences’ new facility. The 7 km marathon had 12 AlFaisal University stu-dents, two of whom got 6th and 10th place and priz-es: Alhaitham Khaled and Abdulelah Assi, from our very own CoM. The very well-organized marathon had the noble objective of promoting a healthy lifestyle in our society and creating an awareness to motivate people into sports.

showed that the blood moved from right ventricle to left chambers of the heart via lungs (pulmonary circulation). Before this, it was believed that blood flowed through in-

visible passages in the heart septum (Galen’s theory). Today, because of a 10th century physician Abu’l Qasim al Zahrawi, surgery has become a part of medical science rather than a task only meant for barbers. He was the first physician to de-scribe ectopic pregnancy as well as the hereditary nature of hemophilia. He invented over 200 surgical instruments and introduced the method

of sublimation and distillation in medicine preparation. SubhanAllah! Most of us are not even aware of their work but as future Muslim physicians and scientists we should keep up the spirit of our great ancestors and as with every-thing use the Quran for our guidance.

Medical Breakthroughs

Drug Delivery Devices “Take it three times a day and DON’T forget!” How many times have we heard that from a doctor and how many times have we not listened and “forgot to take it”? There’s no need to worry anymore; the first successful human tests of drug delivery chips are al-most ready to hit the market. Scientists have found out that an implantable microchip device, the size of a 2 GB USB, can now automatically deliver regular doses of medication to osteoporosis patients. In addition, the device can follow a preprogrammed medica-tion schedule that doctors may remotely adjust if needed.

Predicting Heart Attacks Doctors always order blood tests, prostate tests, and cholesterol tests but very soon they’ll be ordering circulating endothelial cell tests too. Cardiologists in San Diego, Cali-fornia are now closer to predict when their patients might have a heart attack. This new detection method involves tracking a type of cell in the blood called a circulating endo-thelial cell. It is reported that thousands of patients walk away passing stress tests, but soon after end up suffering from myocardial infarcts. This simple blood test can save thousands of lives and lead us to advancements in medicine, like never before.

Healthy Chocolate? We’re always cautious eating chocolate containing high fats and sugars but research shows we don’t need to worry that much anymore because it can be healthy. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition claims that chocolate may be good for your heart by lowering blood pressure and even lower insulin levels. Chocolate contains compounds known as flavonoids which might play a role in the chocolate’s health benefits. Further studies still need to be done to confirm its effects but for now doctors advise if you’re enjoying a little chocolate in your life, then keep doing so.

Diabetic Tattoos In just a few years punk rockers, Harley Davidson fans, and diabetics all can have some-thing in common: a tattoo! Researchers at Northeastern University in Boston are devel-oping a tattoo that can monitor your blood sugar level without the pain of injecting a needle. These glucose monitoring tattoos are only a few millimeters in size and can light up when glucose levels are high while darken when glucose levels drop. Using a handheld device, patients can simply scan their tattoo which unlike traditional tattoos does not permanently stain the skin and stays on top. Vaccines for Cancer Vaccines have been preventing numerous diseases like chicken pox, polio, hepatitis and many more but now researchers have found a vaccine for cancer! Provenge, a new vac-cine for prostate cancer does not only prevent risk of developing cancer by 24 percent it also helps treat patients in which the tumor has metastasized. By simply removing some white blood cells, exposing them to a prostate cancer protein, injecting them back, and letting the body’s immune system do the rest of the work this vaccine is just one step closer in finding the cure to cancer.
