Ambassadors of Peace and

FriendshipMedford, Oregon and Alba , Italy have been Sister Cities since 1960 . President Eisenhower’s “People to People” program was created to promote international goodwill and to counteract the anti-goodwill and counteract the anti-American sentiment that was growing throughout the world in the late fifties . Medford’s choice of international partners was based upon the similarities of the two cities and not on opportunities for commerce . The unique relationship has been built upon close personal friendships and thrives after four decades of global turmoil because it is truly a program that unites people . The student exchanges did not begin until 1985, but they have since become the basis for an ever widening circle of friends in both cities . This year’s ambassadors are continuing a tradition of exchanges that now spans generations . In a world where peace and understanding are in great peril, this year’s exchange has an even greater importance and you are making it possible . Thank you for supporting this year’s mission of peace and friendship .
