It has been two decades since Wilmington last captured the Caro- lina League’s crown in 1999. In the Blue Crew’s first decade they won the league title four times in a span of six years (1994, 1996, 1997 and 1999). BACK IN THE POSTSEASON: Wilmington clinched its first postsea- son berth since 2015 with its first-half CL North championship. That year Wilmington won the first half with a 38-32 record. The Rocks won 44 games in 2019 and finished 19 games above .500 in the first half. The Blue Crew clinched their 2019 crown on June 8. The 2015 Blue Crew eventually reached the Mills Cup Championship Series and was swept by Myrtle Beach. The Rocks are 3-5-1 all time in Mills Cup Championship Series, with the tie coming in 1999 due to a hurricane. MILLS CUP MISERY TO START: The Blue Rocks could not hold an early lead as they dropped a 3-1 decision to the Fayetteville Woodpeck- ers in Game One of the Mills Cup Championship Series on Tuesday at Frawley Stadium. Wilmington trails the best-of-five series 1-0 in its bid to capture the franchise’s first Carolina League crown in two decades. RALLY ROCKS STRIKE AGAIN IN GAME 2: For the third time in this 2019 postseason the Blue Crew erased a late deficit en route to victory, scoring three times in the seventh inning on Wednesday to beat the Fayetteville Woodpeckers 5-4 at Frawley Stadium. Wilm- ington’s win evened the best-of-five series 1-1 as the Rocks look to capture the franchise’s first Carolina League crown in two decades. BIG EIGHTH INNING: Down 4-2 entering the bottom of the sev- enth, the Blue Crew got their comeback potion activated when Kyle Isbel reached on an error by Fayetteville second baseman Ruben Castro. Wood- peckers reliever Riley Cabral then hit Brewer Hicklen with a 3-2 pitch. The duo was still stuck at first and second two outs later, but Dennicher Carrasco came through with a game-tying, two-run single. His flair shot landed in the perfect spot in shallow right, allowing a hustling Hicklen to circle all the way around from first. Nick Pratto followed with a walk, which set the stage for a go-ahead hit off the bat of catcher MJ Melendez. He poked a sinking-liner to right that plated Carrasco. Andrew Beckwith tossed two scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win, while Tad Ratliff worked a flawless ninth to nail down the save. NDCS RALLY: The Blue Rocks dug an 0-2 deficit in the Carolina League Northern Division Championship Series before winning three straight thrillers at Frawley Stadium to reach the Mills Cup Championship Series. GAME THREE RALLY: The Rocks were three outs away from their season ending on Friday, but instead rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Red Sox 3-2 at Frawley Stadium. Brewer Hicklen’s safety-squeeze single earned the Blue Crew a dra- matic walk-off win. GAME FOUR’S WILD RIDE: For the second time in as many nights Wilmington used a walk-off win to prevent its season from coming to an end, as the Blue Crew beat Salem 5-4 in 10 innings on Saturday at Frawley Stadium. The victory extended the Carolina League Northern Division Championship Series to a decisive Game Five, as Wilmington pulled even in the best-of-five set. Delaware na- tive Tyler Hill was the hero, as he beat his former team with an RBI- single in extras after an eighth-inning rally got it to extras. GAME FIVE ADVANCE: Home runs by Kyle Isbel and Dennicher Carrasco plus 10 strikeouts from Rito Lugo lifted the Wilmington Blue Rocks to the Mills Cup Championship Series for the first time in four years thanks to a 6-3 win over the Salem Red Sox on Sunday at Frawley Stadium. The victory completed Wilmington’s comeback from a 2-0 hole in the best-of-five Carolina League Northern Division Championship Se- ries. The Rocks’ offense was all about quality. They managed nine total hits, but five went for extra bases and two of them were long balls. 2019 Regular-Season Series: WIL vs. FAY WIL Won Series 8-6 Date Site Result 5/29 Fayetteville W, 4-3 5/30 Fayetteville L, 5-2 5/31 Fayetteville W, 5-3 6/1 Fayetteville L, 2-1 6/6 Wilmington L, 8-1 6/7 Wilmington W, 2-0 6/8 Wilmington W, 4-3 (10) 6/9 Wilmington W, 5-3 7/30 Wilmington L, 6-0 7/31 Wilmington L, 1-0 8/1 Wilmington W, 3-2 8/6 Fayetteville W, 4-1 (10) 8/7 Fayetteville L, 13-5 8/8 Fayetteville W, 3-1 Carolina League SDCS Best-of-Five, Fayetteville Won, 3-2 Date Site Result 9/4 Fayetteville W, 3-0 (7) 9/4 Fayetteville L, 3-0 (7) 9/7 Down East L, 5-4 (8) 9/7 Down East W, 7-2 (7) 9/8 Down East W, 6-3 Today’s Starting Pitchers Wilmington: LHP Kris Bubic Fayetteville: RHP Nivaldo Rodriguez Carolina League NDCS Best-of-Five, Wilmington Won 3-2 Date Site Result 9/4 Salem L, 8-3 9/5 Salem L, 5-2 9/6 Wilmington W, 3-2 9/7 Wilmington W, 5-4 (10) 9/8 Wilmington W, 5-4 Mills Cup Championship Series Best-of-Five, Series Tied 1-1` Date Site Result 9/10 Wilmington L, 3-1. 9/11 Wilmington W, 5-4. 9/12 Fayetteville 6:00 p.m. 9/13 Fayetteville 6:00 p.m. 9/14 Fayetteville 6:00 p.m.

TODAY’S BLUE ROCKS STARTING PITCHER

THE BOOK ON KRIS BUBIC: The Kansas City Royals had four picks in the first 40 selections of the 2018 Draft. Kansas City used each of those choices on college pitchers and all have spent time on the Blue Rocks roster in 2019. Kris Bubic completed the quarter when he was promoted to Wilmington from Low-A on May 21. The lefty played his college ball at Stanford where he was a Third Team All American in 2018, finishing the season 8-1 with a 2.62 ERA in 86.0 innings. He held opponents to a .199 batting average and struck out a team-high 101. Bubic’s amateur career also featured a 2017 Cape Cod League Pitcher of the Year Award. His resume earned him a $1.59 million signing bonus. Bubic entered the season as the Royals’ No. 9 prospect according to MLB.com. Bubic appeared in the All-Star Future’s Game in Cleveland this season and was named a Carolina League year-end All-Star.LAST TIME OUT: Despite 11 strikeouts, no walks and six one-two-three frames in seven innings pitched, Bubic had to settle for a no-decision in Game Three of the NDCS against Salem. He allowed two hits and a run in the fourth, and the offense went hitless with runners in scoring position when he was on the mound.VERSUS OPPONENT: This is Bubic’s third start against Fayetteville. He tossed six shutout frames in a no-decision on June 7. That night the lefty scattered six hits, but fanned 10 and walked only one. He tossed a complete game on August 8, allowing just one run, while equaling a season-high with 11 strikeouts.HIS TIME IN LEXINGTON: Bubic began the season at Low-A Lexington where he went 4-1 with a 2.08 ERA in nine starts for the Legends. Bubic yielded just 27 hits in 47.2 innings pitched, fanning 75 and walking only 15. His batting average against was only .164 and his WHIP was an eye-popping 0.88.HIS BEST AS A BLUE ROCK: Bubic took a no-hitter into the ninth inning, but had to settle for a one-hit complete game shutout as the Rocks beat Lynchburg, 1-0 on August 15. Bubic allowed just one baserunner over the Hillcats’ first eight trips to the plate. They flame-throwing prospect issued a lead-off walk in the fourth to Steve Kwan, who was caught stealing second just one out later. Bubic faced the minimum through eight innings. He fanned 11 on the night and needed only 99 pitches (67 strikes) to get 27 outs. TRYING TO BE LIKE THE BEST: One thing you will see mentioned in every single scouting report on Bubic is his funky delivery. It’s something he’s always had and has drawn him some comparisons to one of the best pitchers of all time. “A lot of guys kind of joke with me that I kind of look like Clayton Kershaw when I pitch because I’ve got the funky delivery,” Bubic says. “He was definitely a guy I watched growing up and tried to mimic because obviously he’s producing great results on the field but he’s also a great guy off the field as well. I’ve had a good changeup pretty much my whole life, so guys like Cole Hamels and Dallas Keuchel who were also lefties, were also guys I like to watch closely as well.”CROATIAN FAMILY: Bubic’s family has heavy Croatian influence. His dad was born and raised there before coming to the United States right around the age Kris is now. His mom’s parents were also both born and raised there as well. Bubic says he has been to the country once, when he was five years old, but would love to go back eventually. He doesn’t speak Croatian, but can understand small segments of the language. His dad and Croatian grandparents all speak English, but Bubic says when they get mad at him they’ll occasionally slip back into their native tongue. And he’s figured out over the years what they’re saying when they do. THE BEST ALSO HAPPENS TO BE THE CLOSEST: Bubic attended Stanford, which he called his dream school. “It’s just a competitive environment, I think academically and athletically, you’re going to be challenged both on and off the field,” Bubic says. “Obviously, the people that go there are just a special breed of people, like they’re the best of the best at what they do, whether that’s in the classroom or on the field--so you’re constantly being challenged, and you’re constantly looking for ways to get better, and never really settling or being content where you are. It’s just the place that brings out the best in you and brings out competition.” On top of all that the campus was very close where he grew up. Bubic calls himself a homebody at heart, so playing at a school where his parents and grandparents could attend his home games was critical. He said he just got really lucky that school also happened to be a world-class university.DRAFT DAY MEMORIES: Bubic watched the Draft with all of his Stanford teammates, which he said was an absolutely awesome experience. He admits almost as good was not just hearing his name, but whom he was hearing it from. “Bo Jackson said my name as the representative at the Draft for the Royals,” Bubic recalls. “Him saying my name was just an honor. You never really expect to see something like that, and then when it happens, it’s just surreal.”

Mario Lisson and Miguel Vega each had two of Wilmington’s eight base hits on the night.

His shutout and no-hit bids were simultaneously smashed when Jose Duarte drilled a two-out, ninth-inning home run to center field that just cleared the wall. The only other baserunner Wilmington had on its last evening of the 2007 season came courtesy of Frederick’s lone defensive miscue, a ground ball through the wickets of third base-man Ryan Finan in the fifth inning off the bat of Brian McFall.

2008 NORTHERN DIvISION SERIES

Game 1: Wednesday, Sept. 3 at PotomacWIL 000 000 010 000 000 1 5 0POT 000 010 000 000 001 2 11 0WP: Leatherman LP: Haltiwanger ATT: 851In what boiled down to a battle of bullpens, the Wilmington relief corps finally cracked after three hours and 54-minutes of taut baseball. Russ Haltiwanger uncorked a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the 15th that scored Boomer Whiting from third base and the Potomac Nationals walked off with a 2-1 victo-ry. The division-champion P-Nats handed the Rocks just their fifth Game One setback in 17 all-time playoff series. It marked the longest playoff game in team his-tory.

Game 2: Thursday, Sept. 4 at PotomacWIL 010 100 000 0 2 6 2POT 011 000 000 1 3 13 0WP: Everts LP: Chambliss ATT: 812Dan Lyons delivered an RBI single off All-Star closer Tyler Chambliss in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the P-Nats a commanding 2-0 lead in the series. Jeff Bianchi had a heroic effort for the Blue Rocks in spite of the loss. The second baseman gave the Rocks their first lead of the series with a one-out solo blast off starter Erik Arnesen in the top of the second inning. Bianchi cleared both levels of the blue batter’s eye in dead-cen-ter field. Trailing 2-1 in the fourth, Bianchi again came to the rescue when he singled home Paulo Orlando from second base with two outs.

Game 3: Friday, Sept. 5 at WilmingtonPOT 001 000 000 1 2 2WIL 000 000 000 0 4 0WP: Detwiler LP: Teaford ATT: 1,103Boomer Whiting knocked in the game’s lone run with a third-inning sac fly. Starter Everett Teaford (0-1) tied a season and career-high with nine strikeouts and walked one batter over seven stellar frames. One of the two hits the lefty gave up was a ground-rule double by Michael Burgess leading off the third inning. After a sac bunt moved him to third, Burgess came plateward on Whiting’s fly ball to left field. Whiting, who scored both walk-off runs in the first two games, undoubtedly was the most valuable player in the series. Wilmington’s Chris Chavez and Ben Swaggerty combined to face the minimum over the final two innings. On the series, the Rocks hit a slim .133 (15-for-113). In the Game Three loss, the Rocks loaded the bases in three separate innings, yet came up empty each time en route to stranding eight men in scoring position.

Down a run in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Blue Rocks would load the bases with nobody out, but could only scratch across a single run to tie the game in their last outs. That would come back to haunt the Blue Rocks as the Pelicans plated a man in the tenth and the Blue Rocks fell in extras in Game One.

Isbel said it: (On his debut pro season)...”Last year was just the perfect situations for me in my first year of pro ball. The coaches were always helping me out. My teammates around me made it easy for me to play. I didn’t really have to rely on myself too much. I knew that people behind me would do the job if I didn’t get it done. And it was just stress free and having fun.” (On the experience of winning a championship in his first year as a pro)...”Stepping into that team atmosphere was absolutely awesome. The teammates I had, it was like a family. It was stress free from day one and we just would all play well together. It was good to go through that and to get a taste of it right away.” (On Draft Day)...It was just an awesome experience. It’s a dream come true. Since day one. I’ve been working for that. Now my goal is to be play-ing in the big leagues so I’ll keep working and have a ways to go, but this is obviously a big first step. And everybody (at UNLV) was just so supportive. (Being the highest drafted player ever in program history) is a huge honor. I worked hard for it, but certainly could not have done it without everyone who helped me.” (On Differences between playing in college and the pros)...The biggest (difference) is just playing every day. Everybody talks about just getting used to the grind, but it’s hard to appreciate how different it is until you get to experience it. Really in college you play three days a week and in pro ball you play every single day. So just getting used to that was the biggest adjustment.” (On his appreciation of Derek Jeter)...My favorite player growing up was Derek Jeter just the way he went out and did his business and how he’s respected by other players.”

Then I went to Lexington starting off really slow there and then kind of catching fire there for a couple months, and then having the opportunity to move up to Wilmington was really really special. Got up here, really had a good time, started playing well with the guys and then I got called into the office unexpectedly and was told that Seuly (Matias) got hurt in Lexington and that I was going to have to go back for the playoffs. Originally I was pretty upset, but I had to look through it with a different lens and just try to change my perspective. That’s one of the biggest lessons I learned last year and in life was that it’s all about what lens you look through. So I took that approach and made the most of my opportunity in Lexington. I went down there and felt like I contributed a lot to the team. I felt like I was a leader on the team, and at the end of the day we were able win a champion-ship, which is what you set out to do at the beginning of every year you play this game.”

Melendez said it: (On being a catcher)...I definitely take a lot of pride in catching just because I’m not only catching for myself but also for the pitchers. I have to be able to call a good game, be able to frame pitches that are borderline, be able to block balls. I want my pitchers to have confi-dence in me and trust in me to be able to throw breaking ball with two strikes and know that I’m going to be able to block it. I do think that defense comes first but it’s a bal-ance. I don’t think hitting should be very far behind.” (On his relationship with fellow catching prospect Silberto Rivero)...It’s been amazing working together, we have a great relationship. On and off the field. I think on the field when one of us are struggling a little bit whether it’s with the bat, were able to help each other out, give each other advice. If one of us is doing good in that category, be able to like pick each other back up, and just give each other advice and kind of boost each other’s confidence when we may not have it. And then when we’re both doing well, just trying to piggyback on that and make sure that we can keep that flowing for as long as possible.” (On passing up the chance to play for his Dad at FIU)... “It was definitely a tough decision. I grew up watching my dad’s teams play all my life and have never been to the College World Series Super Regional. So that’s something that I wanted to do. I wanted to go play for him, not only for myself, but also for him. I wanted to bring that bring back the College World Series title to wherever he’s coaching if I knew at that at that particular moment, and so it was definitely a tough decision. Pratto said it: (On his first year of full-season ball)...I think overall it was a good year offensively. There were some areas I can work on like consistency and cutting down on the strikeouts, but I made progress. The biggest thing was getting used to full-season ball, all the ups and downs you go through. You have to ride the wave. It was a long year, but having guys like MJ [Melendez] and Seuly [Matias]…we all just built off each other. It was a fantastic team.” (On Making a Playoff Run last year in Lexington)...That was my first taste of the playoffs. Obviously, you put expectations in your head, but it lived up to it and was a lot of fun.” (On his defense)...I had to work on my throwing a little bit, on throws to second and to first. I changed my arm slot mid-year, and it really didn’t help me out. So we went back to how I normally do it. Naturally, I’m in a lower slot, a little more sidearm. I’ve always been fine in terms of accuracy, but the infielders were complaining that my throws moved too much [like a two-seam fastball]. But I went back to my normal slot and everything is fine. I think what I’m best at is picking balls in the dirt, and my agility around the bag. Picking balls and saving bad throws is huge.” (On Who He Admires in Game) I really like Joey Votto’s offensive approach at the plate. He has the average, the on-base percentage, the slugging percentage. He doesn’t strike out too much. That’s what I’d like to be.

BLUE ROCKS HITTERS NOTES

#27 Colby Schultz INF Ht: 6’0 Wt: 180 Age: 24 B/T: L/R Born: San Juan Capistrano, CA

Notes: Signed as a non-drafted free agent on June 16, 2018. Signed by Colin Gonzales Attended Saddleback College where he batted .315/.381/.466 Earning Second Team All-Orange Empire Conference Honors, Transferred to the University of California Riverside

2019 Notes: -Hit his first-career professional home run on 5/19 @ Potomac.-Has made starts at 2B, SS, 3B and LF this season.-Joined Blue Rocks on May 11th

2018 Notes: -Split time between Rookie Burlington and Surprise-Batted .246 w/ 0HR 5XBH 24 RBI 16BB in 40G

Schultz said it: On living with a host family “I have lived with host families in the past during summer ball. It’s awe-some. What host families do for the players, the behind the scenes stuff that they take care of to make it an easy transi-tion for us, they are the real heroes. On going to UC Riverside “I went to a community college out of high school and at the time, they came and saw me play a few times and I had a few teammates on the team who were committed there so they would come out and watch them play and consequently saw me play and after that, I signed and really enjoyed my time there.” On signing free agent deal with the Royals “It was a dream come true. The fact that they are giving me an opportunity to continue my baseball career is something I will forever be greatful. I want to ride this wave as long as I can.” On playing other positions “I can play third base, but middle infield, espe-cially shortstop is where I played mostly in college. As long as I’m out on the field trying to help the team win, it doesn’t matter where I play. At third base, it’s more of a one-handed position. Sometimes you are playinig for a bunt, other times you don’t have that much reaction time and you have to be ready.” On deciding to want to pursue baseball as a career “I grew up playing the game. “My two older brothers played and my dad played in college and a little bit after that. I’d say it was after high school when I had the opportunity to either pursue baseball or sit back. Due to an elbow injury, I actually took my freshman year off and that really opened my eyes and solidified that I would miss the game. It’s a grind and if you don’t really love the game, it can chew you up and spit you out.” On learning more than just the elbow injury “I actually found out that I have a gluten allergy so now my diet is extremely important to me. I put on muscle, I put on weight and now I’ve never felt better and it’s really been beneficial for me. Person or player he idolized “Although my dad is a Boston Red Sox fan, I’ve always loved watching Derek Jeter. Just the type of guy he is and his work ethic. Dustin Pedroia is an absoulte grinder and a little guy. Then there’s my dad, he’s been there every step of the way baseball wise. My mom as well, she has been the worker of the house, suporting myself and my brothers. My family in general just really have supported me and I can’t thank them enough.”
