Tonight’s Starters POT: RHP Luis Reyes (3-5, 5.26 ERA) vs. WIL: LHP Colin Rodgers (1-2, 3.03 ERA) The Kansas City Royals certainly wanted Colin Rodgers. The organiza- tion proved that when they gave the 2012 third-round pick a $700,000 signing bonus--almost a quarter-million above slot. They remain bull- ish on the left-hander’s future despite a serious elbow injury in 2013 that resulted in Tommy John Surgery. Rodgers returned to the mound in 2014, and struggled statistically each of the next three seasons. In 2014 he made one start for Idaho Falls (Pioneer League) and then finished the campaign with the Burlington Royals (Appalachian League) going 0-4 with a 7.36 ERA in six outings. Two years ago he split the campaign be- tween the bullpen and the starting rotation with the Lexington Legends, posting a 3-11 mark, one save and a 5.02 ERA in 24 appearances (eight starts). Then in 2016 injuries derailed his first season with the Blue Rocks, where he went 2-7 with a 6.02 ERA in 16 games and 11 starts. Rogers posted an ERA of 4.33 in the season’s first half but then allowed 19 runs (17 earned) in only 8.1 frames over three starts in July before being shut down for the season. He opened this year pitching exclusively out of the bullpen where he fanned 14 and yielded just three runs over 13.1 frames. Rodgers returned to the rotation earlier this month in place of Emilio Ogando, who was promoted to Double-A Northwest Arkan- sas. This is his fifth start and last time out he tossed seven frames, his longest start since 2013. Luis Reyes gets the ball tonight for the Potomac Nationals. Reyes was signed as an 18-year-old by the Washington Nationals in 2012 as part of the organization’s Dominican Academy. Scouts love his fastball, which has good sink and sits in the low-to-mid 90s. The 22-year-old righty made his Advanced-A debut last season and struggled, going 4-8 with a 5.60 ERA in 14 starts with Potomac. An injury cost Reyes most of the month of July, before the righty returned in August to make three appearances in the New York/Penn League and three starts for Low-A Hagerstown. Reyes did have success against the Rocks though, posting a 2-1 record and a 4.15 ERA in three starts versus Wilmington. Ironically, all three of the outings against the Blue Crew came in succession during the month of April. He got the nod at Frawley Stadium on Opening Night this season and took the hard- luck loss despite yielding just two runs on one hit in five frames. His prob- lem was command, walking six. In fact the 6-foot-2 175 pounder has walked 10 in three starts against the Rocks and eight in his other six 2017 outings. He throws a two-seamer, a four-seamer, a change and a curve. The Rocks lost the resumption of the May 18 suspended game against the P-Nats, 4-3, before earning a 4-2 come-from-behind victory in a seven-inning affair in the nightcap. Major League rehabber Hunter Dozier delivered the game-tying hit in the second game before Jecksson Flores pushed the Rocks ahead to stay with an RBI single in the sixth inning. FAMILIAR FOES: With both games on Friday being decided by two runs or less, the Rocks and Nationals have now had 10 of their 16 contests decided by two scores or less. The Rocks have taken eight of the last 12 match-ups and three of the last four contests that have been decided by a pair of runs or fewer. Overall, the Rocks lead the head-to-head matchup 9-7. The Rocks have played the Nationals more times (16) through the first two months of the season than the rest of the Northern Division combined (15 games). DOZIER REHAB: The Wilmington Blue Rocks added Major League rehabber Hunter Dozier to their roster on Tuesday. He went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in his 2017 debut on Tuesday and followed that up by going 1-for-3 with an RBI. Dozier, who is a member of the Royals’ 40-man roster, was placed on the 60-Day Disabled List in early-April with a strained oblique. Dozier spent the first half of the 2014 season with the Blue Rocks, batting .295 with four homers, 18 doubles and 39 RBI in 66 Advanced-A games. After struggling for a season-and-a-half in Double-A, things clicked for Dozier in 2016. He earned a promotion to Triple-A Omaha a month into the season and hit 15 hom- ers and 36 doubles in 103 Triple-A games, which earned him a September call up to Kansas City. With the Royals Dozier appeared in eight games and went 4-for-19 with a double two walks and an RBI. AMAZING IN MONTH OF MAY: The Blue Rocks offense continues to roll through the month of May, averaging just under five runs per game. Wilmington has scored dou- ble-digit runs in five of their 25 games played this month. Entering May the Rocks had gone 54 consecutive contests without plating 10 runs. Wilmington is currently hitting .274 in the second month of the season, which is 58 points higher than the .216 average the team posted in April. As a result, the Rocks are 16-9 in the month, which is tied for the best record in the Carolina League (with Salem, Lynchburg and Carolina). LOVING THE LONG BALL: Over the Blue Rocks’ first 26 games of the season the Blue Crew had hit just 11 home runs, the second-fewest in the Carolina League. But over the last 22 games Wilmington has blasted 21 more long balls. Anderson Miller has clubbed five of the homers over this stretch. Miller has seven on the season after hitting just three during the entire second half with Wilmington last year. Chase Vallot is not far off of Miller’s scorching pace, hitting four homers during Wilmington’s power surge. Cody Jones and Nicky Lopez have also clobbered two during the stretch. TONS OF TIGHT GAMES: The Blue Rocks have played in a Carolina League-high 20 one-run games so far in 2017. No other club in the ten-team loop has played in more than 17 single-score affairs. Unfortunately for Wilmington, the Rocks are just 8-13 in such contests, but have won four of the last five. Wilmington has also played in six extra innings affairs already in 2017-the second-most in the Carolina League. The Rocks are just 2-4 in those games not completed in regulation. THEY SAID IT, MANAGER JAMIE QUIRK: “I was disappointed in the first game because we came out like we hadn’t played in a week. But, we came out the second game and scored right away in the first inning. Scott Blewett was unbelievable. You don’t know this, but we had one pitcher in the bullpen (Jacob Bodner) and he pitched the seventh inning. That was all we had, so we needed Blewett to pitch and he did, six great innings. He was fantastic, and Bodner finished it up. We played good, solid baseball in the second game...I give credit to Chase Vallot, he had the two hiccups in the inning they scored two runs in, and then he threw two guys out on two throws that are as good as any catcher you are ever going to see. To do that in the same game that he had the hiccups in shows me something. That was huge. We stopped their running game, got two huge outs on the bases, and then we executed in the bottom of the sixth. Vallot led off with a walk. I’m sure every- one thought I was going to bunt with Roman Collins. I pinch-ran Cody Jones and he made a great read getting to third base on Collins’ base hit, so we had first and third. With Jecksson Flores coming up, everybody in the world probably thought we were going to squeeze. I said, Flores, I’m going to give you one pitch, they think you are going to bunt and they are going to throw a fastball right down the middle and I want you to take a hack. He hit it real hard and we took off from there. It was just good execution. They picked it up, came to play. You never want to say it was a huge win, but that was a huge win.”

The Potomac Picture

Delaware native Tripp Keister returns to Potomac for his fourth season at the helm of the Nationals. He led the P-Nats to a Mills Cup Championship in his first season with the organization in 2014. He brought them back to the postseason last year after a hiatus in 2015. Last season, Potomac clinched a playoff berth with a second half, second place finish in the North Division as Lynchburg swept both halves of the season. The P-Nats finished with a 73-65 overall record and was ousted by the Hillcats in the North Division semifinals 2-1. Keister started his managerial career in 2012 with the GCL Nationals. He led the Hagerstown Sun of the South Atlantic League to 80 wins in 2013 and finished the regular season in 2014 with a 78-58 record on the way to winning the Mills Cup.

The Nationals’ top-prospect and now named the 9th best prospect in all of baseball in Baseball America’s latest ranking, Victor Robles returns to Potomac after playing in 41 games last season. He hit .262 three home runs and drove in 11 RBI. Entering 2017, the 19-year old out-fielder has been named the best hitter for average, best athlete, best defensive outfielder ad best outfield arm in Washington’s farm system per Baseball America.

Joining Robles is third baseman Kelvin Gutierrez (#16 prospect in system). Last year he had pit stops in Short-Season Auburn and Low-A Hagerstown. He hit .301 in 105 games prior to his promotion to Potomac. In a small sample size of ten games, he hit .237 with a pair of extra-base hits. Other position players that rank in the Top 30 Prospects in the Nats’ system are shortstop Edwin Lora (#23) and outfielder Telmito Agustin (#28).

On the mound, the P-Nats have six new hurlers in their pitching staff. RHP Joan Baez (#29) is the only pitcher on the 2017 squad in the Top-30 prospects according to Baseball America. The hard-throwing righty has been clocked at triple digits, reaching 100 m.p.h. on the radar gun. He spent all of last year with Low-A Hagerstown and posted a 9-7 record with a 3.94 ERA.

The P-Nats pitching staff also consists of Mariano Rivera III, the son of former New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera. Rivera III was originally drafted by the Yankees in 2014 but didn’t sign. The Nationals selected him in the fourth round of the 2015 draft out of Iona (NY). The younger Rivera has collected 13 saves in 19 opportunities through his first two seasons in professional baseball.

There is a lot of international talent on the P-Nats roster. There are ten Dominican-born players on the roster, including all five starting pitchers for the P-Nats. In addition, the highly touted prospects all hail from the Dominican Republic.

So far in the 2017 head-to-head series, the Blue Rocks lead 9-7 through the first 16 games played. Of those contests, 10 have been decided by two runs or less. The Rocks have taken 8 of the last 12 games against the Nationals.

The Book on Rodgers (2017)

COLIN RODGERS: The Kansas City Royals certainly wanted Colin Rodgers. The organization proved that when they gave the 2012 third-round pick a $700,000 signing bonus--almost a quarter-million above slot. They remain bull-ish on the left-hander’s future despite a serious elbow injury in 2013 that resulted in Tommy John Surgery. Two years ago he split the campaign between the bullpen and the starting rotation with the Lexington Legends, posting a 3-11 mark, one save and a 5.02 ERA in 24 appearances (eight starts). Rodgers returned to the rotation earlier this month in place of Emilio Ogando, who was promoted to Double-A Northwest Arkansas. This is his fifth start and last time out he tossed seven frames, his longest start since 2013.

LEARNING FROM THOSE WHO HAD BEEN THERE BEFORE: Tommy John Surgery can be an intimidating thing, and that was certainly the case going into the process for Rodgers in 2013. “I didn’t really know too many guys before I had the surgery who had gone through it before,” Rodgers says. “So I really didn’t have much to base things off of. But I got in touch with some guys that also had the surgery when I was going through the process and I was able to keep asking them how they’re feeling and what they’re doing. That helped a lot because I could know if I was on track or a little behind or whatever.”

GRUELING REHAB: “I think the hardest part about rehabbing from the injury is getting back to my old stuff and who I was before Tommy John,” Rodgers says. “Particularly my mechanical stuff. Just trying to develop everything that I had before the surgery because I’m basically coming back here with a new arm so I have to reteach myself everything. All-in-all the rehab was good and was definitely more of a mental process than a physical one.”

DEVELOPING AS A PITCHER: The injury may have changed Rodgers a little, but the Royals still love what he brings to the table. Just as impressive as Rodgers’ physical ability is the confidence the southpaw has in himself and the feel he has for what he is capable of. “I think I command the zone pretty well,” Rodgers says. “I try to get outs in three-pitches-or-less because I’m not a big power guy that’s going to strike everyone out. So I’ve got to pitch to my strengths, which is to miss barrels. I work in my fastball (88-to-92 MPH) and then to keep them off balance I go to the changeup, and then whenever I need to I can use that curveball.” Rodgers agrees with scouts about the evolution of his change over the course of his career. “I don’t have a preference when it comes to my changeup. In the past I used to have a preference to throw it exclusively to righties being a left-handed pitcher, but I have learned over the years that it has been effective against lefties as well. So now I’ll throw it against any batter, in any count, but especially when I’m behind in the count. It’s definitely a contact pitch to try and produce outs quickly so I don’t get deep into counts.”

GETTING MENTALLY TOUGHER: Blue Rocks manager Jamie Quirk has been very impressed by Rodgers’ hard work during the offseason which led to drastically improved physical conditioning. “His commitment to being in shape stands out. You can tell his body is totally different and he lost 20-some pounds over the winter heading into Spring Training. Everyone was shocked in a good way. It totally has changed his body and he’s in shape. You don’t think that 20-some-year-olds can get out of shape but he did. He dedicated himself to get back in shape and had a great Spring. He had a wake up call in his career and we talked to him a lot last year. He was gassed after three or four innings and this year he realizes the importance of his body being in shape and it’s showing it.”

That’s my game, speed and getting on and creating havoc on the bases. I told myself I had two pitches and then I’m out...It took its own form (on 62-game on-base streak). I pretty much just rolled with it. I ended the season in Idaho and pretty much knew about my streak but when I started last season in Lexington I didn’t even think about it. (On keeping streak alive) I think developing as a player each year and getting better each year helped.... I think defense is the number one key to me. That helps wins games. I know hitting does too but if you have pitching and defense, that can help make a run in the playoffs...Working with the coaches down in Spring Training and learning the game more. They said it: “I had a blast in Australia. We ended up having a really good team and really good group of guys down in Melbourne, Australia. I had a really good time and got a lot better and made improvements ... Living there was actually not as different as I thought it would be. There’s a lot of US pop culture there so that wasn’t much different. As far as baseball, there was actually a big difference. There’s a lot of Japanese guys there so the style of play, especially the pitching is a lot different. There’s a lot more splitters than change ups and I also saw a lot more soft throwing lefties which helped me out a lot... I played football growing up and I actually almost ended up playing football in college instead of baseball. I had a few more opportunities in football than baseball but baseball has always been my passion and it ended up working out... Definitely the fans. We have a good group of fans here and they like to come out and watch. I like it here.”

They said it: (On what led to great success in Lexington to start the season)“Honestly, my teammates. My first couple of games weren’t very good and my teammates knew I could do it, they had my back and I couldn’t have done it without my teammates and the great coach-ing staff we have down there...Just trying to be as consistent as possible (On what he worked on in the off-season). That’s everyone’s baseball goal, to be as consistent as possible.”...“I actually know probably more guys here (in Wilmington) than I did at the beginning of the Lexington season so I’m super excited. It’s a great group of guys here...I loved that school (the University of New Mexico). Great school, great place to hit. Coach (Ray) Birmingham is a great head coach and knows what he is talking about with hitting. His support staff as well with Buddy Goldsmith, Ken (Jacome), the pitching coach, and Tony Cappuccilli were all great coaches and had great team environment there...(on moving from California to New Mexico) It is definitely different. It was the best place for me to go play baseball. My best friend from high school, Jared Holly, went to New Mexico first. He was a sophomore there my freshman year and he helped me in a lot of ways to make the transition easier...(On transition from catcher to first base.)...I absolutely love it. Catching is rough, I respect those guys for being back there. Those guys grind and put their bodies on the line. Being at first is definitely a lot easier on the body...(On being in the cleanup spot in his first Class A Advanced start) I’m sure there will be some pregame jitters obviously. First game, new stadium, new guys on the team but it’s just baseball. Hopefully we get a win and keep the good vibes going.”

They said it: “I would say definitely attitude was huge for me. Learning how to take each at-bat at a time and move forward from the negative things and take the positives of each at-bat and that’s helped me relax at the plate... No. Absolutely not. I never had seven RBIs before. It was really cool. I guess the coolest thing about it was that I had no idea how many RBIs I had until the game was over and my teammates were telling me. I think that’s the only reason why it happened. If I went in to each at-bat saying I already have four, let me get another one RBI, it wouldn’t have happened for me and messed with my attitude. I don’t think it would’ve been as successful as a game... I think that’s the reason why I’m here. I really pride myself on defense. I try to come out every day to run a pitching staff, keep the ball in front of me and not let runners advance. I think that’s what I pride myself on the most... I don’t have a specific catcher. I can give you one guy. I was a big Jorge Posada fan of the New York Yankees. Just the way he was so agile behind the plate and lanky. He wasn’t a big stocky dude because I’m not like that either, but I liked the way he moved behind the plate for sure... Definitely an energizer bunny for these guys, I think I provide a lot of energy on the field, in the bullpen or the clubhouse. Someone that can provide energy day in and day out because we all know the season can get long.”

Got a chance to play in the Cape Cod League my sophomore year. After that, my junior year went well and had a good season and started to hear my name a lot more. I always had a chip on my shoulder going to a smaller school and being a small school guy and I talked to the guys who were drafted before me in Wade Gaynor and Kes Carter were the two guys that went higher and they always played with a chip on their shoulder. I think it helped me get to that position and be blessed with that opportunity...At first in 2015 I got called up there after ten games in with Burlington and it was a little stressful. I really didn’t know how to handle that situation. I went back last year and embraced it a lot more and had a lot more fun and stayed loose. I had a lot of fun with it. Last year they had an Anderson Miller bobblehead day and the first pitch of the game, I hit a home run and it was one of the top five moments of my career. It was an amazing opportunity and I know a lot of guys don’t get to do that so I took it all in...It goes a long way. We spend so much time together and the closer you are off the field, the better you’re going to play together, play for each other, pick each other up and play as a unit. There’s not separation in the locker room and from what I see we have a really close knit group and we’ve had a lot of fun so far. Even the guys who just jumped on board we got to know a lot in Spring Training. Like Foster (Griffin) said, a lot of us played together and we know how to get along with each other. I’m really looking forward to it.”

I feel like that was a huge aspect on top of the better talent that you faced day in and day out... Growing up I lived two miles from the stadium. I could hear the band playing so that’s all I knew growing up so it was an opportunity for me to go there it was an easy yes... Like everyone says growing up, it kind of clicks. Not saying I’m a power hitter now but it was different to add that aspect to my game. Like I said, I’m not going to go out there and try to hit home runs they just kind of happened last year. Hopefully it will continue this year ...On going to Univ. of Michigan to play: Growing up I lived two miles from the stadium. I could hear the band play-ing so that’s all I knew growing up so it was an opportunity for me to go there it was an easy yes....It was unbelievable. The coaching staff there helped me a lot and I learned a lot about the game. Constantly building knowledge and getting to know different situations to prepare me professionally...For me it was getting healthy this offseason. I came off surgery last year so just getting a full offseason under my belt and getting my strength back I think that had a lot to do with the flaws I was having and let my swing take care of itself...There’s no one specific player for me personally. I’m a fan of a lot of guys in the MLB because they’re can’t miss TV. The stuff I learned in college ball really helped me mature as a player and really help me deal with adversity. Kind of preserve through the slumps you go through and know how to handle those and I think that was the biggest thing. When things weren’t or were going right, just know how to act.”... “I think it’s great. In baseball you have to play defense and offense, especially at the shortstop position. You need to be a good defender, get on base, anyway to help the team win. That’s what I try to do day in and day out try to get on base and let the people behind me score me and pick up the ball and help my pitchers out. Anyway to help the team succeed.”... “Creighton helped me. Freshman year I had the strikeouts, it comes. As I matured my sophomore and junior year I got better a pitch recognition and worked the counts. I got comfortable battling with two strikes and don’t be afraid that there are two strikes on you and get nervous. I think that’s the biggest thing. Not being afraid with two strikes, work the count as the leadoff hitter and the walks will come.”...On being rated #13 prospect “No I don’t think it adds any pressure. I don’t try to really read into that stuff. I kind of just play the game and try to help the team win and stay inside the locker room. I don’t look too much into that and try to compete and help the team.” ...“I was a big Derek Jeter fan. I used to watch the Yankees a lot and Derek Jeter play. Right now I like Brandon Crawford. I really like how he plays. He’s a grinder and would do anything to help the team. It always looks like he has a dirty uniform so I kind of try to emulate that and play the game hard.” ...“I’ve never been this far east. It’s a new part of America I haven’t seen. I’ve been and played to the west coast, been to the south but I haven’t been this far east so I’m just looking forward to meeting the people up here and what they have to offer.”

They Said It: “I’m excited to play here.... Once I get on base I want to get in scoring position because I know the guys behind me can swing the bat and drive me in. I need to be on base and score runs and help the team any way I can... I’m looking forward to playing every day, that’s the goal and that’s why I’m here. I love playing baseball and I’m looking to that more than anything else and doing what I can to help the club win...I was lucky enough to go to Australia and play in the Australian Baseball League. I kind of got my lower half going, but I’m still honing it and trying to get more up the middle. It has allowed me to have a little more power than in the past...(On living in Australia) It was awesome. We got to play with big leagu-ers and that’s special just in itself. We got to see how they conduct themselves. Living in a new country was a lifetime experience...(Cultural shocks in Australia) They drive on the wrong side of the road and that took a little while to get used to. Navigating and little things here and there, like stores closing earlier was a little different, but I loved it...Last year really helped (on being in WIL for second season and being comfortable in CF at Frawley Stadium). I feel like I have a good feel and know how to read the fly balls. I feel really comfortable here (in Wilmington).”

I don’t remember the initial impact or five seconds after it happened. The only thing I remember is walk-ing down the third base line into the clubhouse and everything after that. I went to the first hospi-tal and had to go to a second hospital because the first one didn’t have a dentist. The dentist had to pull my teeth back into place. My teeth were bent at a 45-degree angle so she had to pop those back in. The doctor had to stitch me up. I had 30 stitches from the top of my nose to underneath my lip.”...(On getting back in the box): “It was a little tough because getting back in the box was a little uncomfortable at first. Luckily, I got hit in my first at-bat in the arm and I was worried about getting hit again but when I got hit, I said alright it’s fine.”... “Last year I had the solid blue piece like the one Javier Baez wears. It kind of messed with my timing because I could see it every time I’d go hit. I asked my agent if there was an alternate and he said yes there is. I said why not and got the helmet and every day I hit with it on the machine and no problem now.”... “From when I first played rookie ball in Burlington it’s a night and day difference to the type of player I am. I have a better feel of how to play the game and how to treat yourself better. You have to play 140 games a year so you have to do whatever you have to do to get yourself ready.”... “I grew up a Houston Astros fan and I really loved Brad Ausmus. Now more so Yadier Molina and Salvador Perez. What they do is unbelievable and I’m not quite at their level yet, but I hope to be soon.”
