About Move For Hunger

Move For Hunger is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization established to support the efforts of our communities’ food banks.

Many people throw out a good deal of “stuff” when they move. Unfortunately, a lot of this “stuff” is food that could be delivered to a family in need rather than thrown away. That’s where we come in. Our movers offer to pick up unopened, non-perishable food items during the moving process and deliver it to their local food banks.

With the commitment of our partners, Move For Hunger will bring a tremendous amount of relief to those most desperate for our help. Since our commencement in August 2009, we have delivered over 2,060,000 Pounds of food for local food banks across North America.

Members of the relocation industry have a unique opportunity to make a difference in the fight against hunger. While 1-in-6 Americans are food insecure, 1-in-7 relocate every year. Movers and real estate agents are in the home at an ideal time to educate thousands of individuals about the issue of hunger, all while providing an easy way for their clients to give back.

Since founding in 2009:

Over 500 moving companies have joined our fight against hunger.

The Move For Hunger network has grown to 46 states as well as Canada.

Together, the Move For Hunger network has delivered over 2,060,000 pounds of food. That’s enough to provide for over 1,591,000 meals to those in need.

Six of the leading van lines in the relocation industry have become partners of Move For Hunger.

Over 1,500 real estate professionals, including 30 real estate offices have joined the Move For Hunger Real Estate Program.

our work

In addition to collecting food on moving day, Move For Hunger actively organizes food drives and hunger relief events throughout the year. In a little over 3 years, Move For Hunger has held over 270 food drives all across North America. Our moving partners also assist in an array of community events to save food banks on transportation costs.

The students of Broken Arrow school district teamed up with our local moving partner, Accent Moving and Storage, for a massive food drive that spanned 25 schools. This was the biggest drive we’ve held so far and the students and faculty rose to the occasion. At the end of the week, over 12,600 pounds was delivered to the Broken Arrow Neighbors food pantry.

14 movers in the Move For Hunger network took part in the 20th annual National Assocation of Letter Carrier’s Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive for 2013. Our movers donated their trucks, boxes and resources to deliver over 436,000 lbs. of food to food banks across the country. Over 363,000 meals were delivered to food banks.

The team at Prominent Properties - Sotheby’s International Realty held their first annual Thou-sand Pound Challenge food drive in their 11 real estate offices across Northern New Jersey. Within the first couple of weeks our partners had already reached their goal. They teamed up with 3 local moving partners to deliver of 3,000 lbs. of food to local food banks.

On Saturday, February 2nd, sisters Kelli and Mi-cah Fagala held their second annual Soup-er Bowl Food Drive in Monroe, NC and Fort Mill, SC. The sisters called on their neighbors to help them fill two moving trucks with food in the parking lots of two Harris Teeter Neighborhood Food & Pharmacy stores. This year the sisters collected well over 7,300 lbs. of food to food pantries throughout their area.

Toshiba For Good “Helping the Helpers”The good folks at Toshiba were nice enough to organize the “Helping the Helpers” grant contest that provided over $30,000 dollars worth of technology and services to a few lucky non-profits from across the United States. With a little help from our clever video submission, we were fortunate enough to be one of the organizations that received the grant.

Martha Stewart “Thanks For Giving” ContestMartha Stewart OmniMedia partnered up with the online fundraising platform “CrowdRise” to support hunger relief organizations during the Fall of 2012. Move For Hunger was lucky enough to be included in the short-list of hunger relief organizations chosen to participate in the contest. Thanks to the support we received from our movers, partners and support-ers we took home the grand prize of $25,000 for our hunger relief efforts.

Ford Global Test DriveMFH was selected as one of forty winners of the Ford Focus Global Drive in February 2011. In addition to a $10,000 grant, MFH received a four-day trip to Madrid, Spain and use of a 2012 Ford Focus for six weeks. In Spain MFH networked with other non-profit leaders and test drove the Ford Focus. MFH used the Ford Focus to take a 30-day road trip across the U.S. to talk to food banks about hunger in their communities.

JP Morgan Chase Community Giving Move For Hunger received $20,000 from Chase Community Giving following Facebook users’ voting for the charities they support in the summer of 2010. Of over 100,000 entries, MFH came in 85th place out of the top 200 winners. MFH was selected by the Chase Community Giving Advisory Board as one of seventeen charities to receive an additional $30,000 in funding.

NBC/Chase American Giving AwardsMove For Hunger was featured at the American Giving Awards on NBC. From a field of thousands of Chase Community Giving winners MFH was selected as one of twenty-five semi-finalists. With the votes from our supporters and followers MFH was chosen as one of five finalists. Move For Hunger was awarded $125,000 Grant and was able to spread hunger awareness to millions of viewers.

In 2011, Move For Hunger was nominated as a top 5 finalist for the Do Something Awards which aired on VH1 on August 18th. Do Something is an organization that works with young people under 25 who are creating social change. Move For Hunger was awarded a $10,000 grant for their innovative approach to hunger relief, and had the opportunity to share their organization of millions of viewers across the nation.
