The Chiefs host the division-leading Everett Silvertips tonight for their last home game before departing on a six-game road trip through the East Division, beginning in Regina on Friday. Spokane won’t play on home ice again until November 4 against the Red Deer Rebels. They are hoping to leave on a positive note after two nail-biting losses in a row over the weekend; 4-3 in overtime to the Silvertips on Friday and 3-2 in a shootout to Portland on Saturday. Kailer Yamamoto had a strong weekend with four points, including two goals and an assist against the Silvertips. Koby Morrisseau, drafted ninth overall by the Chiefs in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft, chipped in his first career goal on Saturday night against Portland, with fellow rookie Logan Foster earning his first career assist.

Spokane has come out slow off the blocks to start the season with a 2-4-1-1 record. They have led after the first period just once and never led after two. They’ve been outscored 11-4 in the first period and 13-8 in the second, but have outscored opponents 9-7 in the third. A point of emphasis moving forward will be the penalty kill, which has allowed 11 goals in 35 changes (68.6%), showing the youth of this year’s squad after posting a 78.4% success rate last season. Power play goals against account for a third of the Chiefs goals allowed.

The Chiefs are 0-0-1-0 against the Silvertips this season (Friday’s loss) after going 3-6-1-0 against them last year. Patrick Bajkov played the role of spoiler on Friday, scoring the game-winner just 24 seconds into overtime for his second goal of the night. Chiefs goaltenders were solid over the weekend, with Jayden Sittler turning away 17 of 20 shots faced against the Silvertips on Friday (two of his goals against were on the power play) and Dawson Weatherill making 28 saves on Saturday before allowing just one score during the shootout.

Spokane is led offensively by Kailer Yamamoto (6-7-13) and older brother Keanu Yamamoto (2-7-9). After those two, it’s been a committee, headlined by 2017 NHL Draft prospect F Jaret Anderson-Dolan (3-3-6) and 2015 WHL Bantam Draft first-overall pick D Ty Smith (1-5-6). Carolina Hurricanes third-round draft pick Hudson Elynuik (1-4-5 in 5 GP) will not be available tonight as he serves the second of a three game suspension earned from a charging major and game misconduct on Oct. 14 against Everett.

TAKE NOTICE… Kailer Yamamoto came out of the gates this season looking to make a statement in his draft year. The third-year forward has 13 points (6G-7A; t-11th WHL) in 8 games to start the season, including a team-leading 3 PP goals. With a late September birthday, he will first become eligible for the NHL Entry Draft in 2017. A Spokane native, he impressed in stints at international tournaments with Team USA (Five Nations, U-18, U-20 NJEC) and produced 128 points (42 goals and 86 assists) in his first two seasons with the Chiefs (125 games). Multiple news outlets project Yamamoto as a future first round pick, most recently Sportsnet’s early rankings with him at 17th overall. BIG BROTHER… The older of the Yamamoto brothers, Keanu, has been an assist machine this season, picking up 7 in 8 games including 4 power play helpers and a 4-game point streak broken on Oct. 14. Keanu is the elder statesman on this year’s Chiefs’ squad with 207 games played. The Yamamoto brothers have yet to be left off the stat sheet this season, with one of the two recording a point in all 8 of the Chiefs’ games. YOUTH MOVEMENT… The Chiefs are one of the youngest teams in the WHL this season; 18 players born in 1998 or later, including seven 17-year-olds and three 16-year-olds. Ten of the 19 are WHL rookies. A WHL rookie has scored a goal for the Chiefs in 3 of their last 4 home games. BLACK & WHITE… Three Chiefs – D Ty Smith, F Koby Morrisseau and F Eli Zummack – were named by Hockey Canada to the upcoming 2016 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Ontario (Oct. 27 – Nov. 5). Smith and Zummack are on Canada Team Black while Morrisseau is on Team White. ROOKIE STANDS TALL… Rookie goaltender Dawson Weatherill made his first appearance as a Chief in relief on Oct. 7 vs. Lethbridge, jumping in at the 7:30 of the second period and was perfect to close out the game. He made his first start as a Chief the following night against the Victoria Royals, making 31 saves on 34 shots faced, then stone-walled the Seattle Thunderbirds in Kent on Oct. 11 with 44 saves on his way to 1st Star honors in a 3-1 win. Most recently, Weatherill made 29 saves in a 3-2 shootout loss to Portland on Oct. 17. HIGH-POWERED… The Chiefs have been stellar on the power play this season, capitalizing with 9 goals in 30 chances (30%; 5th WHL). Power plays account for 9 of the team’s 21 goals through 8 games (42.8%). THEY’RE WATCHING… The Chiefs had five forwards named to the NHL Central Scouting’s preliminary “Players to Watch” list, as announced on Oct. 4. Kailer Yamamoto earned an “A” rating, indicating a potential first-round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. Jaret Anderson-Dolan got a “B” (2nd-3rd) while three players – Ethan McIndoe, Pavel Kousal and Jake McGrew – each earned “C” scores. HIGHWAY TO HELGESEN… Third-year defenseman Tyson Helgesen was named the Chiefs’ team captain in a pre-game ceremony on October 1. He takes over for two-year leader Jason Fram. Helgesen scored the game-winning goal in his first game wearing the “C”; a 5-2 win over Tri-City. PREMIER PROSPECTS… Three Chiefs’ prospects – all forwards – were recently named to their respective provincial rosters for the upcoming 2016 Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup. Carter Chorney (2nd Rd, 39th Overall in 2016 WHL Bantam Draft) made Team AB, Ethan Leyh (8th, 160th) to Team BC and Cordel Larson (9th, 186th) to Team SK. NEW ERA… Long-time Spokane GM Tim Speltz announced on August 16 that he had accepted a job with the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs and would step down from his position with the Chiefs. Originally hired in 1990, Speltz reigned over a 26-year run of success rivaled by very few in the WHL, including 961 regular season wins, 23 playoff appearances, 142 playoff wins, seven trips to the Western Conference Finals, four to the WHL Finals, two WHL Championships and two Memorial Cup Championships. Speltz will become the Director of Western Area Scouting for the Leafs, retain his ownership stake in the Chiefs and maintain his home in Spokane. HEY MR. CARTER... Scott Carter was announced as the Chiefs’ new GM on Sept. 8. A Penticton, B.C. native, Carter boasts 28+ years of experience as a hockey scout, business manager and entrepreneur. He was an NHL regional scout from 1987-2015, President & GM of the Penticton Vees from 2004-2008, BCHL Executive of the Year in 2005, co-founder of the BCHHF in 1991, co-founder of the WPHL in 1994 and has been a full partner in Vaughn Custom Sports since 1996. ALL-AMERICAN… F Kailer Yamamoto played in the USA Hockey CCM All-American Prospects Game in Philadelphia on Sept. 22, featuring 42 of the top American-born prospects for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. He finished with 2 assists and a +1 rating as his Team Howe lost 6-4 to Team LeClair.

NATIONAL NODS… The Spokane Chiefs had 6 players recognized with invitations to national team camps over the summer. Four players – D Ty Smith, D Matt Leduc, F Eli Zummack and F Koby Morrisseau – were invited to Hockey Canada’s U17 camp. Jaret Anderson-Dolan went to Canada’s U18 camp. Kailer Yamamoto competed at USA Hockey’s National Junior Evaluation Camp with aspirations to make this winter’s Team USA for the IIHF World Junior Championship. HURRICANE HUDSON… Chiefs forward Hudson Elynuik was selected in the third round (74th overall) in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes. The towering centerman scored 19 goals and added 25 assists in 56 GP last season, turning heads after the turn of the calendar year with a point in 17 of 20 games starting on January 9, including a 10-game point streak. Elynuik’s father Pat was the 8th Overall pick in the 1986 draft to the Winnipeg Jets & went on to play 500+ NHL games. BENCH BOSS… Don Nachbaur returns to the Chiefs for his 7th season as head coach having recently signed an extension through the 2017-18 season. The WHL veteran ranks 1st in franchise history in career wins (236) and just eclipsed Mike Babcock for the all-time lead in career games coached for the Chiefs (431). Entering the season, his .552 winning percentage with Spokane ranked 2nd behind Hardy Sauter (.629). Nachbaur is one of four WHL coaches with 600+ career wins (665). He is also the winningest coach in Tri-City Americans history w/ 235. NEW FACES IN NET… Neither of the Chiefs’ two rostered goalies, Jayden Sittler and Dawson Weatherill, played for the Chiefs before this season. Sittler was acquired over the summer from Lethbridge, where he played 39 games with a 2.94 GAA and .905 SV%. Weatherill was acquired on Sept. 29 from Red Deer after appearing in 5 games as a 16-year-old last season, allowing 7 goals on 52 shots while going 1-1-0-0. Both call Red Deer home. CZECH THEM OUT… The Chiefs drafted Czech teammates Ondrej Najman and Pavel Kousal with the 22nd and 82nd picks, respectively, in the 2016 CHL Import Draft. Najman scored 18 goals and 44 points in 38 games, including four multi-goal performances, and added three goals and three assists in five games with the Czechs at the 2016 IIHF U18 World Championship in Grand Forks, N.D. Kousal racked up 20 goals and 23 assists in the same 38 games, including a stretch in which he scored a point in 11 of 12 games. He recorded three assists with the Czechs at the U18 Championship. FAMILY AFFAIR… D Jake Toporowski has family ties to Spokane. The second-year defenseman’s father, Kerry Toporowski, played for the Chiefs from 1989-91, racking up 889 PIM (2nd in franchise history) including a single-season record 505 in 90-91.
