A. THE MEDIA TRAINING PROGRAM

The primacy of training and retraining for media professionals has become a very real necessity for several reasons. Practitioners who have had the opportunity of acquiring academic backgrounds in journalism, mass communication, public relations, or related disciplines also need refresher courses to keep them up-to-date with the daily changing trends and standards in the industry.

Similarly, new entrants into media practice, whether in such areas as reporting, presentation, news writing, production, video editing, translation, broadcast management, camera handling, studio operations or newspaper journalism; also require start-up mentoring before taking a plunge into a new world. These Nigerian nationals would equally require basic knowledge of French to interact with nationals of other sister countries that constitute ECOWAS. Nigerians also travel to these countries a lot, for education, trade, commerce and leisure, in addition to mutually maintaining foreign embassies and high commissions in these countries. Nigerians are also among the most widely traveled around the world. Thousands of them embark on educational, business or diplomatic missions to many French speaking regions of Europe, the French Quebec in Canada and elsewhere around the world. Native French speakers from around the world also target Nigeria a lot for several other factors. As a result, many French companies have been operating in Nigeria in such sectors as energy, construction, banking, etc. for several decades. = ARABIC FOR BEGINNERS COURSE

Aside from Arabic Beginners Coursebeing the main language of transmitting the Holy Quran, which is Islam's Holiest Book, Arabic is used variously in all regions of the world by both Muslims and non-Muslims. In fact, there are several Christian Arabs, to whom Arabic is their mother tongue. All the countries of North Africa and those of the Middle East are Arab Speaking. Even in Iran where Persian is the native language, Arabic is a major language of daily interaction, religious and educational instruction, business, commerce and more. Both the United Nations and the African Union have Arabic as one of their officially approved international languages. In addition, two of the leading travel destinations of the world, Saudi Arabia and Dubai are Arabic speaking locations. Every year, not less than two million people from all regions of the world converge on Mecca (in Saudi Arabia) to perform the Holy Muslim Pilgrimage in Mecca and Medina for at least forty days. Many of these pilgrims come from non-Arab speaking nations and so, majority do not understand Arabic. Similarly, thousands of Christian Arabs from around the Middle East and other parts of Africa perform the annual pilgrimage to Jerusalem. These Christian pilgrims meet and interact with their fellow Christians from other non-Arabic speaking regions of the world, especially Africa. Many Nigerians are found in this category. The Arabic langauge training has therefore become increasingly necessary for these group of religious travellers and clients. In the same vein, many Nigerians travel to Arab locations such as Egypt for medical treatment or tourism, Dubai for business and leisure, Libya for higher education, Qatar for leisure, work and business, etc. Many also work in major regional and global organisations such as United Nations, ECOWAS, African Union, etc. All of these non-Arab speaking people traveling and interacting with Arabs, and other speakers of Arabic around the world, need basic knowledge of Arabic. At the conclusion of the Arabic Language Course, therefore, the enrolees will be expected to achieve �uency in verbal and written communication, can read and write Arabic and would be able to engage in general interaction with other Arabic speakers within different contexts. = HAUSA PROFICIENCY LESSONS

Hausa is one of the four most populous indigenous languages in Africa. Others are Arabic, Fulfulde and Kiswahili. Hausa is widely spoken across the west, east and central Africa. This is in addition to clusters of Hausa speaking communities in other parts of the continent and outside. It is used in business, education, political administration, management, marketing, judicial administration, legislative discussion, and more.

The popularity of the language accounted for the establishment of Hausa services in most of the major international radio organizations such as the BBC, VOA, Radio France International, Radio Moscow, Radio Beijing, Radio Iran, etc. Nigerians from non-Hausa speaking regions of the county have become increasingly interested in the language for several reasons. Some of these reasons include its ease of learning and the characteristic warmth of the Hausa speaking people. During the colonial and regional eras, Hausa has been the official language

of administration across northern Nigeria. Even during the time of Sheikh Othman Bin Fodiyo, Founder of the historic Sokoto Caliphate, Hausa was adopted as the official lingua Franca in administering the region. Nowadays, there are many Legislative Houses of Assembly in the north where Hausa is used along with English in legislative business. It is also widely used in broadcasting in all the countries and states where Fulfulde listeners and viewers are dominant. Even though virtually all of the over a dozen initial Emirates of the Sokoto Caliphate had Fulbe �ag bearers, now there are less than ten percent of these empires where Fulfulde is spoken in the royal palaces. All the four radio stations in Yola bear Fulfulde names namely: (number one); (land of Radio Gotel Fombina FM the South); (fortress of Modibbo Adama); (modesty). In addition, Adamawa Radio Pulaaku FM even the �fth radio station that is on the drawing board in Yola is designated to be named in Fulfulde ( ), which means The Voice FM. Nomadic Fulani communities are also Konngol FMfound in all the forests of Africa fending for their cattle and other livestock. Even though many original Fulbe descendants in Hausaland have since lost their Fulfulde language, the urge to get it back has been resonating, even though it has not yet gotten substantial steam. Thousands of other people especially settlers among Fulbe communities are getting increasingly interested in learning the basics of the language. Even though expert trainers are available everywhere, few professionalized and organized avenues exist for such training. Even educational institutions such as Universities and Colleges of Education that offer academic programs in Fulfulde are not sufficient enough to accommodate all the interested people who seek relative pro�ciency in Fulfulde as their second or third language. = TEACHING ADLaM - A NEW FULFULDE ALPHABET

Fulfulde language has faced several challenges, which include threats of extinction for a variety of reasons. One of them is the multiplicity of dialects, making it difficult for the Fulbe to fully or meaningfully, comprehend communication with their kinsmen, who come from locations other than their own. Over the years, several attempts have been made to either standardize or harmonize the variety of dialects in order to ease communication and interaction among the speakers, regardless of geographic barriers. Before the advent of ADLaM, the Fulbe have mainly communicated through foreign letters such as Arabic. These letters were written in Fulfulde using Arabic script, which the Fulbe have used since embracing Islam, many centuries ago. However, the inability to standardize the Arabic script made it difficult for people to write in a uni�ed way. Every Fulfulde writer was free to write as

he wished. In this regard, reading the letters in the unharmonised alphabets continued to pose a serious challenge in mass communication. Then, reading resulted into guess work as Arabic does not possess all the Fulfulde alphabets representing the different sounds. And some of the sounds for many of the letters used did not exist in Fulfulde at all. It is in the light of these challenges that ADLaM was �nally invented. It is a , founded New Fulfulde Alphabetby two Fulbe siblings, Abdoulaye and Ibrahima, from the Nzerekore city in southern Guinea. These brothers created 28 alphabets that made up the called , New Fulfulde Script ADLaMwhich has provided a solution for the age-long elusive search for dialectal harmony and alphabet standardization. Even though, like Arabic, the new begins from ADLaM alphabet right to left, they have consonants and vowels like English. Although ADLaM was originally invented by Fulbe for the sake of Fulfulde, most languages of West Africa can be written using the new script. ADLaM has therefore emerged as one of the newest platforms to promote literacy and education in Africa and the world. The initiative provides access to learning and information through alphabetization using the new . Several training initiatives have since commenced in several West African countries including Nigeria.
