    Windows Media Player (abbreviated WMP) is aproprietary digital media player and medialibrary application developed by Microsoftthat is used for playing audio, video and

    viewing images on personal computersrunning the Microsoft Windows operatingsystem, as well as on Pocket PC and WindowsMobile-based devices. Editions of WindowsMedia Player were also released for Mac OS,Mac OS X and Solaris but development ofthese has since been discontinued.

    Microsoft Windows has had a media playersince 1991, when Windows 3.0 withMultiMedia Extensions was released.

    This version of Windows, which was includedwith "Multimedia PC"-compatible machinesbut not available for retail sale, included theMedia Player application, was capable ofplaying .mmm animation files, and could beextended to support other formats.

    VLC media player is a free and open sourcemedia player and multimedia framework writtenby the VideoLAN project.

    VLC is a portable multimedia player, encoder,

    and streamer supporting many audio and videocodecs and file formats as well as DVDs, VCDs,and various streaming protocols. It is able tostream over networks and to transcode

    multimedia files and save them into variousformats. VLC used to stand for VideoLAN Client,but that initialism is now deprecated.

    Originally the VideoLAN project started as anacademic project in 1996. It was intended toconsist of a client and server to stream videosacross a campus network. VLC was the client

    for the VideoLAN project, with VLC standingfor VideoLan Client. Originally developed bystudents at the cole Centrale Paris, it is nowdeveloped by contributors worldwide, yetsecond year student of cole Centrale Parisstill coordinate the project.

    VLC is popular for its ability to play the videocontent of incomplete, unfinished, ordamaged video downloads before the fileshave been fully downloaded. (For example,

    files still downloading via BitTorrent, eMule,or Gnutella) . It also plays m2t MPEGtransport streams (.TS) files while they arestill being digitized from an HDV camera via aFireWire cable, making it possible to monitorthe video as it is being played. This isbecause it is a packet-based player.

    Winamp is a proprietary media player forWindows-based PCs, written by Nullsoft, nowa subsidiary of AOL. It is freeware/shareware,multi-format, extensible with plug-ins and

    skins, and is noted for its graphical soundvisualization, playlist, and media libraryfeatures. Winamp was released by JustinFrankel in 1997, and its popularity grewquickly, along with the developing trend ofMP3 file-sharing.

    The minimalist WinAMP 0.20a was released asfreeware on 21 April 1997.

    Its windowless menubar-only interface showedonly play (open), stop, pause, and unpause

    functions. A file specified on the command line or dropped

    onto its icon would be played. MP3 decoding wasperformed by the AMP decoding engine by

    Tomislav Uzelac, which was free for non-commercial use. The acronym "AMP" stood for"Advanced Multimedia Products".
