What is Distribution?

Distribution is perhaps one of the most important parts of film creation as it allows people to view the film in selected ways, and there is no point in making a film if no one will see it to allow it to draw a profit or attract attention for the directors and creators to allow them to potentially get contracts for bigger budget films. When distributing a film the important part is to stick to a budget but still release in a way that suits your target audience, for example if you made a film about videogames aimed at teenagers then the online platform of YouTube would be appropriate as it is free to upload videos to it and most teenagers go onto YouTube frequently which increases the chances of it being discovered. It is also possible to monetize videos on YouTube so that you may actually turn a profit from creating it.Another form of distribution is by using a distribution company which will represent the film at festivals and other such venues, this can be costly but effective due to the fact that distribution is their profession and they may be respected enough for people to trust their judgement in distributing good films. We went with this distribution method and used the company “Studiocanal” as they deal with independent film distribution and their company is recognised as a competent company who distribute effectively.

Why is our Film Independent?

Our film is an independent film due to the lower budget that we worked with and the fact that we did not receive funding outside of the small group that worked on it, this means that we did not receive funding from the “Big Six” of film creation, this consists of: Warner, Disney, 20th Century Fox, Universal, Paramount, and Columbia.Due to our film not being funded from outside sources we had free reign to craft the film to our image of it, we had full control but quite a low budget to work with so it does not have the flashiness of other mainstream films.

What Methods Would be Suitable for a Feature Film?

For a feature fil it would be suitable to have a big production company to run adverts on every available platform so that the movie can each as many people as possible ad turn a bigger profit that the expenses were to make the film. The companies would also have to get prime times in cinemas so that many people will buy tickets ad the profits will rise. Other ways would be to release the film as a DVD or Blu-ray so that people will buy it and the film will turn a larger profit and allow the creation of another film that will have a higher budget so it will turn an even larger profit, this will create a snowball effect that will gain them extortionate amounts of money and fame.
