Media Release Violence against students with disabilities in Australian Schools 17 December 2015 United Voices for People with Disabilities ("UVPD") calls for urgent action to combat violence against students with disabilities in Australian Schools. “The release of the numerous allegations against teachers in New South Wales schools of assault, regrettably mirrors the general treatment of students with disabilities across Australia” said UVPD Chair Peter Cross. “There is sufficient history now suggesting patterns of violence against children with disabilities in schools that cannot be ignored. Departments of education across Australia need to urgently convene to discuss urgent systemic reform for the protection of students with disabilities. ” UVPD strongly supports the call for a Royal Commission into the abuse of people with disabilities as it is clear that much of this abuse continues to be unreported. The recent Federal Senate Inquiry into the abuse of people with disabilities suggests that violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation are commonplace. “Until Australians understand the breadth of this issue, inadequate and substandard responses to violence against people with disabilities will continue to be implemented” said Peter Cross.
