1. CURRENT RESEARCH INTERESTS

My research interests are in the area of child and adolescent environmental

health. I focus on identifying and examining policy-relevant social and physical

environmental determinants that impact the health of children and youth. My research

goal is to reduce and to mitigate the health impacts of environmental factors that

children and adolescents are exposed to on a regular basis, thus contributing to

health promotion and enhancing community health.

I am currently involved in the following research initiatives:

Research Title: ‘Examining and Addressing Constraints to Sport Participation among

Ethnically-Diverse Female Adolescents’.

This project is funded through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research

Council and Sport Canada. This action-based research aims to examine

individual, task, and environmental constraints of sport participation among ethnic-

minority adolescent girls who reside in Ontario, Canada, and to develop solutions

that enhance sport participation among this sub-population.

Research Title: ‘Examining Constraints to Sport Participation among Ethnically-Diverse

Female Adolescents from Durham Region, Ontario’.

This project is funded through Women’s Xchange 15K, Women’s College. It is a

small scale project that focuses on examining individual, task, and environmental

constraints of sport participation among ethnic-minority adolescent girls from

Durham Region, Ontario.

Research Title: ‘EduTox Video Challenge’.

This is a Health Canada funded project, which is a collaboration between some of

Canada’s most respected environmental, health, youth and educational

organizations. The project consists of a new video contest to give young people a

voice to promote awareness and action on toxins, as well as a chance to be

nationally recognized for their leadership.

Research Title: ‘National Study of Population Health in the United Arab Emirates (UAE)’.

I initiated this research program in 2007 while I was residing in the UAE. The

overall research goals are to assess the health status of a cohort of participants

between the ages of 15 and 19 years old, the health status of their siblings and

parents, and their exposures to a range of health determinants. I am currently

focusing on a couple of projects within this research program. The first project

examines rates and predictors of tonsillectomy in this sample and is led by UOIT

MHSc student Kaveh Kayani. The second project focuses on health behavior of

UAE adolescents.

Research Title: ‘Exploring the Health of University Undergraduate Students Living in

Various Housing Accommodations’.

I am the Research Supervisor for this Master’s thesis research led by UOIT

student Shantel Mangroo. The main goal of this research is to examine

relationships between environmental exposures and the health of UOIT

undergraduate students, with a focus on type of housing accommodations.

Research Title: ‘Lost in Transition: Experiences of Transfusion Dependent Patients in

Toronto’.

I am co-supervising Julie Vizza (UOIT) on this Master’s thesis research. The main

research objectives are to understand the intrinsic meaning of being classified as

a pediatric patient/ and or an adult patient, and to gain a deeper understanding of

the daily experiences, anxieties, and fears of living with b-thalassemia.

Research Title: ‘Physical Activity and Asthma in Childhood’.

BARAKAT-HADDAD CAROLINE, CV

This is a Master’s thesis research led by Astrid D’souza and which I am

supervising. This research focuses on the effects that parental perceptions,

beliefs, and experiences about the physical environment, physical activity, and

asthma management, have on the level and type of physical activity for asthmatic

children.
