The Kimberly Area School District does not dis-
criminate on the basis of race, color, religion, na-
tional origin, ancestry, creed, pregnancy, marital
status, parental status, sexual orientation, sex,
(including transgender status, change of sex or
gender identity), or physical, mental, emotional, or
learning disability ("Protected Classes") in any of
its student program and activities.
Dear Woodland Families, The span from winter to spring break represents the longest stretch of un-interrupted learning throughout the year. It’s also the time of year when our students have settled into routines, staff have had a full semester to build relationships with students and updates have been shared during January Parent/Teacher conferences.
While teachers have been making adjustments to students’ learning plans throughout the year, staff continue to analyze our students’ learning needs and make plans to respond. Using the learning data, our teachers work with colleagues to consider various action steps to help students reach their goals. In some cases the supports may include regrouping students, individualizing instruction, or finding creative ways to encourage students to do their best.
As parents, this is a good time for you to check in with both your child and his or her classroom teacher if you have follow-up questions from confer-ences. Has your child made the progress that is expected? Are you aware of the goals your child’s teacher has for your son or daughter? Has your child been putting forth the effort required to make progress? What-ever your questions might be, we welcome the conversation around meet-ing your child’s needs.
Thank you for your efforts in partnering with us to educate your son or daughter. It takes a team-based approach to help students’ achieve and we are fortunate to have such a strong relationship with our families. If you have additional questions about your child’s progress I encourage you to reach out to his or her teacher or contact me directly.
Sincerely, Dave Lamers Principal
Faces in the Crowd
In an effort to recognize students who are going above and beyond what is ex-pected of them at Woodland Intermediate, “Faces in the Crowd” has been estab-lished. Once a month students are nominated by their classroom teacher or spe-cials teacher and one student is chosen from each class. January “Faces in the Crowd” are: James Thao nominated by Mrs. Carpenter, Sienna Chamberlain nominated by Mrs. Koller, Rowan McClure nominated by Mrs. Heinz, Blake Han-sen nominated by Mrs. Bergmann, and Hannah Maronek nominated by Mr. Lamers. Congratulations to each of you for being a positive role model at Wood-land Intermediate School!
James Thao Sienna Chamberlain Rowan McClure Blake Hansen
Thank you!
A great big thank you goes out to the Woodland PTO and all of the parents that contributed to our teachers’ dinner during parent/ teacher conferences. The food was delicious! The generosity of the Woodland Community is overwhelming!
Forward Exam
Hannah Maronek
It is soon going to be that time of year when we will be adminis-tering the state assessment, the Forward Exam. Testing will take place during the week of April 16th. As in the past, we ask that families try to avoid testing times for appointments, vaca-tions, etc. as the missed test will then need to be made up during one of our make-up times. Make-up tests will be administered during the week of April 23rd and the week of April 30th. Thank you in advance and please contact your child's teacher with any questions.
If anyone has items that they would like to donate to Mr. Calmes for use in his art classes, please bring them into the office. If you are not sure if we will use particular items, please contact Mr. Calmes. We are always looking for people to donate items from home or work. Thank you!

Physical Education
5th and 6th grade P.E.
The 5th and 6th grade
students have finished up their
testing. The tests include the:
Sit-n-Reach, Curl Up, Push-Ups,
and the Pacer. The Students
have saved their scores in
their Chrome books. We will
test the Students again in late
April. Students will do things in
class to help them to improve
their scores.
The next unit that the classes
will get into will be Badminton.
We will go over the
fundamentals of the game and
rules before we get into the
games.

We've had a great start to the semester, already learning about digital citizenship, cyberbullying, and more! Ask the kids what it means to create a positive digital footprint, or why they should always ask permission before posting someone else's photo! These are great topics to discuss at home, where the majority of internet safety issues can occur. Next up, we will learn how to use email appropriately and professionally, formatting a professional email using proper email etiquette. Exchanging emails with your child can be a great way to reinforce what we've learned. It also encourages students to practice their keyboarding skills and can be a fun way to communicate with your child throughout the day.

Konnichiwa! That means hello in Japanese! The kids are off to a great start in their Japanese unit, and will be learning lots of vocabulary, geography and culture along the way! I dare you to ask them what their Japanese name is during the unit, or about renting pets in Japan! They've been so excited to learn as much as they can about this fascinating culture! As always, if you have connections, or know of anyone who would like to come in to speak to our classes, we would love to have them!

Choir information: Our final performance will be April 17th, with the 5th and 6th grade band in the Woodland gym. We will also take a trip over to Sunrise during the school day on a date yet to be determined. The girls will resume on February 20, the boys on February 22. There will be combined rehearsals for both boys and girls on Tuesday, March 27, as well as Thursdays April 5 and 12. There will be no rehearsal on March 29 or April 10. We will have exactly 8 rehearsals, so it is very important that students attend every rehearsal. We will celebrate the April performance with an ice cream party. Hearty congratulations go to Ella Hawkins, who auditioned and was accepted into the Central and North Central Division of American Choral Directors Association Honors Choir. She worked with composer/conductor Fancisco Nunez on February 16 and 17 and performed at the Harris Theater in Chicago.
Healthy Living 6
th Grade
I feel like we’ve picked up right where
we left off last year in health. It’s great to
see the 6th graders again and see how
they’ve grown since last year. (They see it to
and, of course, use me as a measuring stick
to prove their growth.
We’ve covered so much since the
beginning of the semester starting with self-
esteem. Having an intact self-esteem is a
strong foundation for good decision making.
A high self-esteem will enable your child to
try new things, stand up for themselves and
accept their shortcomings. One way to boost
self- esteem is by setting and accomplishing
goals. Please ask your child about their
physical and mental goals and how they are
progressing. Our showcase of goals (if they
choose to show) will be the last week of
February or first week of March.
If you have noticed a newfound
peacefulness at home, you are welcome. It
is because we have been practicing conflict
resolution. Unfortunately, I suspect the
generalization of these skills to home (or
even here at school for that matter) is yet to
be seen. We will be creating and
performing conflict skits as our culminating
activity. In order to be socially and
mentally healthy, we need to be able to
resolve conflicts and be respectful. Please
help reinforce these ideas and ideals at home
starting with deciding “how big is this
problem?”
As always, if you have any questions,
concerns, please contact me.

5th Grade Art The 5th grade students have begun to create a ceramic (clay) piece with a theme of their choice: (animal, person, hobby…). The students started with a ball of clay, and then they shaped their ball of clay into 3-D shape of their choice: (sphere, cube…). The students then traced an area on the top of their shape with a needle tool and hallowed out their container with a wire tool similar to carving out a pumpkin. After the students hallowed out their 3-D shape they smoothed it out with a sponge. The 5th grade students then used different tools to carve designs, words or pictures onto their clay. After they carved into the clay they took extra clay and added something 3-D to their clay piece like: (facial features, handle…). Their clay piece then was set out to dry for a week, and then once it was dry they are set in the kiln and fired. After they are fired the clay is painted with a glaze to give it color and a protective coating and then fired once more. After their clay is fired for the second time they will use their Chromebook and the students go onto our Google classroom and fill out the check-off sheet (self-assessment). After the finish the check-off sheet the students make a name tag for their clay piece and they are displayed in the display cases in the hallways.
The Elements of Art we have covered are
Color, Form, Line and Texture.

Woodland Band Notes
Now is the time of year for instrument
checks. We look over all instruments just to
make sure screws are tight and all parts
are functioning appropriately. If there is a
concern with your child's instrument, we
will let you child know that it may needs
attention. Now is a great time to get it into
the shop. It is not as busy and we have a
month and a half before our next concert.
6th Grade band students began Essential
Elements Book II this week. If your child
has not gotten this book, this weekend
would be the time to run to Heid and pick it
up. Our first assignment in Book II is due
next week.
5th Grade band student have received
all their music for the spring concert. you
will be hearing some Star Wars and sounds
of creepy creatures in the attic. We look
forward to preparing this fun music for our
spring concert.

MUSIC
The 5th and 6th grade students have
begun the keyboarding unit! Students of
the 5th grade are learning correct hand
positions and how to play folk songs on
the piano keyboard. 6th grade students
have picked up where we left off in 5th
grade and have done great work on
learning new songs. We will continue to
play keyboards throughout quarter 3. A
GREAT BIG thank you goes to the PTO
for purchasing new student keyboards for
use in this unit, as well as a new
Clavinova for use in the music room.
This will be an incredibly useful tool,
especially when we prepare for our
concerts.
The choir had an incredible experience at
Lawrence University on February 9th.
The concert was very well received and
we are already looking forward to another
festival next year!

Winter iChat Sixth grade students will be having their second iChat meeting of the school year during the winter months. As we continue to support our students’ Academic and Career Planning (ACP) development, it is important to remember to highlight those skills that are sometimes overlooked on the report card but are so essential to life success. The skills we are referring to go by many names; soft skills, employability skills, learning habits, and skills for success, to name a few. We will look at what researchers have identified as essential soft skills to have in order to find success in college and/or career. Being a member of the workforce is a few years away for our 6th graders, but the skills that are needed to be a productive member of that workforce can be developed now. During our Winter iChat, we will watch the following video, Soft Skills to Pay the Bills, in order to initiate our discussion on when they currently need these soft skills. Each student will take some time to reflect on their soft skills and identify any areas where they could use some improvement. Parents will receive an email from their child inviting them to review their soft skill goal so that each student receives support from school and home. Be sure to ask your child to share what they talked about during their latest iChat!
