Western astrological medicine viewsthe body as a planetary landscape,assigning specific astral signatures to itsstructural constituents, processes, andpathologies. In turn, the astrologicalnatal chart, as representative of thebio-energetic makeup of the individual,is examined for evidence of the type ofconstitutional disharmony that wouldbe familiar to an acupuncturist or otherpractitioner of Oriental Medicine, suchas elemental balance/imbalance of thefour Western elements, “negative”aspects between planets, large-scaleaspect patterns as indicative of specificsyndromes, strength/weakness ofindividual planets, etc., as well asstresses brought about by ongoingplanetary transits.

By contrast, Oriental Medicinecategorizes the human organism as anarrangement of pathways of vital force.e meridians (and the points thatcomprise them) link the various partsof the body and function as an integralaspect of the energetic structure. esemeridians relate to organ systems, theZang-fu, which do not necessarilycorrespond with Western Medicine’sphysiological and biological organs butnevertheless share some of the sameassociations. Human anatomy andfunctioning as illustrated via themeridian network is indeed sophisti-cated and many faceted, presentingthe practitioner with a topographyof incredible complexity and poeticresonance.

As might be apparent from theabove, these two approaches to

medicine seek to engage the body andits apparatus via widely divergentsymbolic systems. How is it thenpossible to reconcile the seeminglyirreconcilable disparities?

As there are 12 meridians inOriental Medicine (not counting theEight Extraordinaries), it has beenhistorically tempting for astrologersto postulate connections betweenthem and the 12 signs of the zodiac,the 12 houses of the astrological chart,and even the 10 planets plus a coupleof asteroids, but Western medicalastrology has not, hitherto, mademuch of these parallels.

In my researches into possiblesynergies between these systems, inconnection with my role as Advisor,Astrological Medicine for the KairosInstitute, I found a notable exceptionin a somewhat unlikely place; in theintroduction to his book, Combinationsof Stellar Influence, Reinhold Ebertin,one of the founders of cosmobiology,a 20th century offshoot of traditionalmedical astrology, offers, almost as anafterthought, an unexpected correlationbetween the meridian pairs and themundane houses of the natal chart. He arranges the 12 earthly branchesof Oriental Medicine on the Westernchart wheel and stipulates that there isa “quincuntial” relationship betweenthese meridian pairings based on theirlayout within the horoscope. In otherwords, Kidney/Bladder, Heart/SmallIntestine, etc., or rather, the houses oftheir association, are separated fromeach other by an angle of 150 degrees,

the quincunx. e quincunx, an astro-logical aspect originally delineated bythe 17th century astronomer andpolymath, Johannes Kepler, is generallyconsidered to be of minor significanceby astrologers; but it is definitelystressful in nature, and the consensusis that it has no small relevance inmatters of health.

Ebertin’s associations are derivedfrom the traditional rulerships of thezodiacal signs and the associatedhouses of the horoscope. In otherwords, the 1st house of the chart, whichis associated with Aries (ruled by Mars),is assigned to the Kidney meridian; andit is paired with the 8th house, Scorpio(traditionally given to Mars in its nightrulership, now Pluto), assigned to theBladder meridian. A similar processis employed with the Triple Heater/Pericardium meridians with the 2nd and7th houses, traditionally ruled by Venus.However, given that there were, priorto the discovery of the trans-Saturnianplanets (Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto),only seven planets (not six), a neatbalance of house rulership withmeridian pairs is not possible.

e complete breakdown of the meridian pairings isillustrated left (including modern rulerships). At firstglance, from the perspective of Oriental Medicine, theassociation of Mars, Aries, and the 1st house with theKidney meridian (and by extension, the organ system)would appear to be a bit problematic; moreover, Western medical astrology assigns dominion over thekidneys themselves to the planet Venus and the signLibra. However, our purpose here is not to dispute thevalidity or invalidity of Ebertin’s thinking in this matter.What he has proposed is a simple and elegant solutionto a fairly complex problem of association, one that isconsistent with the traditions of Western astrology.

We must recognize that such a linkage provides us,as individuals who would attempt to reconcile theincongruities of Western astrology and Oriental

Medicine, with a symbolic connectionbetween the two; and it allows forfurther creative associations to bemade by the practitioner.

ere are several ways in whichwe can capitalize upon the thought-provoking information embodied inEbertin’s “12-house model” of themeridians: 1) we can recognize that,according to the information presented,acupuncture meridians can be seen tohave particular planetary profiles, e.g.,Heart/Small Intestine (a quincuntialpair) may be represented by acombination of the Sun and Jupiter(or Neptune), because the Sun rulesthe 5th house and Jupiter/Neptune the12th; 2) we can map these rulershipsonto the individual horoscope, so that,for example, if a person has planets inthe 1st and 8th houses (both ruledby Mars), no matter what the aspectrelationship, we can say that there isan emphasis on the Kidney/Bladdermeridian (and Mars, of course) in theconstitutional makeup, which couldpossibly indicate a potential disharmonyin that area; or 3) we can examine anindividual chart and make note of thequincuntial relationships betweenindividual planets, and identify theseaspects as highlighting certain keyfactors that may contribute to anoverall pathology.

For the purposes of this article weshall confine our observations to thethird case. Below we examine a pair ofnatal charts, the treatment protocolsthat may be derived from them byextracting quincuntial relationships,

and their potential efficacy asAcutonics® planetary tuning forkcombinations in addressing theconstitutional disharmonies indicatedin the horoscopes.

Example 1: Qe first chart is that of a man havinghis Chiron Return, which occurs aroundthe age of 50. When I treated him in myoffice, I employed the Chiron frequencyin all 3 octaves, as well as a couple ofother combinations suggested by thechart, in particular Jupiter/Pluto, as hehas a prominent conjunction of thetwo, both retrograde in the 8th house.

Chiron is a recent addition to thesolar system, having been discoveredonly in 1975 by an astronomer namedCharles Kowal. Kowal was sufficientlyversed in Greek myth to ascribe tothis celestial newcomer – a planetoid,captured comet, or asteroid whichdescribes a very erratic 50-year orbitbetween Saturn and Uranus – an affinitywith the centaur, Chiron; both of thoseTitanic figures of pre-Olympian Greecefigure prominently in Chiron’s story.e Chiron myth has strong themes ofabandonment and both psychospiritualand physical wounding. Despite hisfrailties and less-than-humanembodiment, Chiron, according tovarious versions of the myth, ismentored in the healing arts by noneother than Apollo the Physician. us,Chiron’s role as a shamanic figure oftransformative mana pre-dates thatof his pupil, Aesculapius, whose staff,the caduceus, is a sigil of the medicalprofession to this day.

While the cosmic Chiron would,naturally, not have been included as aconstituent of the traditional planetarylexicon of Western astrological medi-cine, it has seemed reasonable for me toregard it from a medical perspective asa malefic influence. erefore, planetsthat are configured with Chiron ina natal chart can be seen as beingafflicted, and the Chiron placementin the various houses is similar in itsimpact. is often quite literallyexpresses itself as physical woundingto the part of the body associated withthe planetary placement, as we shall see.

Q is an opera singer who has onlyrecently begun to confront the fact thathe is essentially too old to achieve hisperhaps unrealistic ambitions withinthe field. He has lived for most of thepast two decades in Germany and isconsidering relocating in order topursue a different career path.

Q’s natal Chiron is in Aquarius,and he reported that he had injuredhis Achilles tendon rather severely inrecent months, during what I wouldconsider to be the initial phase of hisChiron Return. According to medicalastrology’s association of parts of thebody with specific zodiacal signs, adoctrine called melothesia, Aquariusis considered to rule the ankles.Additionally, he said that he wasfeeling a great deal of sadness abouthis decision to abandon the activepursuit of the operatic profession.Note that, when we examine Ebertin’smeridian chart, the 11th house, which

ere are three notable quincunxes:1) between the asteroid Vesta in the

11th house in Scorpio and Venus in the 4th; 2) between the Sun and Ceres

in Aquarius in the 2nd house(associated with the throat chakra) and Uranus (the ruler of Aquarius)in Cancer in the 7th house (thenatural ruler of which is Venus); and 3) between Mars in Sagittarius in the 12th house and the Moon in Taurus (one of two signs ruled by Venus) in the 5th.

relates to Aquarius, is associated withthe Lung meridian. So we have aconcatenation of the two presentingsymptoms, the trauma to theankle and an emotional stateof mourning/grief (linkedwith the Lung and theelement of metal)associated with thepotential relinquishmentof his vocational direction.

However, are there anyquincuntial aspects in thechart that relate to theissues voiced by Q during thiscrucial Chiron transit? Here ishis horoscope:

Of these three, the first quincunx,between asteroid Vesta and Venus,illustrated above, is the closest (only6 degrees of arc away from exactitude,or a partile relationship), and would beconsidered to be the most stressful; sowe will concentrate our attention onthat. Quincunxes are regarded asparticularly challenging because thetwo planets involved share no essentialastrological affinity; they are of differentelements (triplicity) and function(quadruplicity), and the houses inwhich they reside are likewise ofcontrasting natures. Vesta in Scorpio inthe 11th house is fixed water, and the11th is a succedent house, i.e., one that“follows” a cardinal house, associated,because of Aquarius, with the airelement. Venus in Aries is cardinalfire, and the 4th house is an angular(cardinal) house, whose natural signis Cancer, which is cardinal water.

Vesta, while an asteroid and nota planet, was discovered more than200 years ago, and is part of therepertoire of Acutonics® tuning forkfrequencies. It is considered to beanalogous to Pluto in its effect; theOlympian goddess Hestia/Vesta iscommonly viewed as emblematic of thefuoco sacro, the “sacred fire,” that burnson the hearth in every home, and whichwas essential to the maintenance of life.As such, Vesta is symbolic of passionatecommitment to a cause or a vocation.

With Vesta in Scorpio, this signatureis further emphasized; Pluto as themodern ruler of Scorpio also bringsthe idea of intensity (I think of the signScorpio, the Scorpion, as burning witha “cold” fire). In general, the choice ofa career as a classical vocalist in ourmodern era predisposes the majority ofindividuals to a long journey in pursuit

of the desired goal; this is not a choicefor the faint of heart. is is also due tothe fact that, of the individual musicaland artistic “instruments” by whichhuman beings express themselves(at least here in the West), it is theclassically trained, operatic voice whichis, by its very nature, the slowest tocome to complete fruition. is isbecause of its intrinsic linkage with theactual physical maturity of its possessorand the technical virtuosity required forits successful execution.

Nevertheless, for an individual, evenone in excellent health, with a youthfulappearance, and a fully-developed vocalinstrument at the height of its expres-sive powers, to persist (in a culturewhich is increasingly youth-obsessed)until his 50th year, in hope that thelonged-for “major career” will

ultimately manifest, requires greatpersistence and perhaps a soupçon ofself-delusion; it is no doubt significantthat Vesta is likewise conjunct Neptune(just over the 11th house cusp, in the10th), which would bring a tendency toidealize the desired vocation and thosesame illusory/delusory attributes.

us, Q’s potential decision torelinquish his cherished operaticambitions can only be a source ofprofound grief, whether he is capableof giving voice to it in the course of hisdaily activities, or not. e importanceof this quincunx to our thesis andputative treatment is further reinforcedby the presence of the sign Libra on themidheaven (MC for short), the cusp of

the 10th house of career. is meansthat his Venus in Aries has dominionover the pursuit of his chosen vocation.Note that the symbolism of fire in thisaspect figure is paramount – the fuocosacro, Vesta, linked to Venus in Aries.Venus is the planet that is traditionallyassociated with the voice, and singing inparticular; and, additionally, his Moonis in Taurus, ruled as we have notedpreviously, by Venus.

Venus in Aries is in the sign of itsdetriment, according to the ancientsystem of planetary dignity, and thusit lacks any essential strength, perhapsindicating the native’s inability toachieve any particular prominence inhis field. Venus is also sextile Chiron,

and thus further weakened in itscapacity to express itself.

We might further observe thatthe main player in this particularastrological passage, Chiron, is locatedin the 2nd house, conjunct Mercury, andsquares Vesta, the other player in ourquincunx. e presence of Chiron inthe 2nd, associated with Taurus andthe throat chakra, conjunct Mercury,the ruler of Gemini, connected tocommunication, and likewise thethroat chakra, suggests that this personexperienced a psychospiritual woundingto that particular energy center, theindividual nature of which wasretriggered at the time of his ChironReturn. e square aspect, characterized

by an angle of 90 degrees, is customarilyregarded as a signature of planetarydisharmony and potential illness.

We might argue then that the choiceof the career as a vocal performer could be compensatory for what I willdescribe as an energetically “damaged”throat, in an attempt to receive recogni-tion for the significance of what he hadto communicate. e self-esteem, nodoubt considerable, that would haveaccrued from financial success andcareer prominence as an opera singer,awarded to very few individualsworldwide, has been denied to him.Q’s experience of an injury to the ankleat this crucial juncture in his personalevolution is anything but coincidental;it would certainly seem to be an overtmanifestation of his unconsciousmotivation, centered on the Chiron

aspect pattern, which is indeed his“Achilles heel.”

I think it can be readily discernedfrom the above that our choice of thisparticular quincunx as expressing thecore issue that has surfaced during thetime of this crucial transit is entirelyapropos, and that, in fact, it encodes akey aspect of his psyche. We couldconceivably have treated him duringthe Chiron Return with a Vesta/Venuscombination, substituting Pluto forVesta, hence Venus/Pluto, and addingVesta, which is a high frequency tuningfork, above the body in the energeticfield. It is also interesting to note thatthe chosen interplanetary intervalutilized in the single treatment,Jupiter/Pluto, mirrors, to a certainextent, an unconscious aspect of theVesta/Neptune conjunction with its

combination of messianic fervor andfantasy wish fulfillment (Jupiter andNeptune are both rulers of Pisces), andthus was a highly appropriate choice.

While I have not seen Q for afollow-up session, I did receive a groupe-mail from him saying that he wasconcentrating on Web design for themoment (he has generated income fromcomputer consultation throughout hiscareer; Mercury rules his 6th houseof work that generates income, asopposed to vocation); it appears thathe may have decided to relinquish hisattachment to his former career track,at least for the time being.

Example 2: Lis is the chart of a woman, L, whomI treated during a demonstration backin 2003; she was also having her ChironReturn. I often find that people cometo me for consultation when they arehaving crucial Chiron transits, and that,invariably, they have difficulties with thethroat chakra, as I myself am an operasinger and voice teacher and coach.

e pronounced placement ofplanets in the upper two quadrants,seen below, might have produced achart without our desired quincuntialrelationships, but, in fact, we have four.However, as three of them involveeither the Moon’s Nodes or the anglesof the chart, not planets, we will onlyconsider the fourth, which is formedbetween Jupiter in Gemini in the8th house and Chiron in Capricorn inthe 3rd house:

e fact that this particular quin-cunx involves Chiron, the protagonistof L’s relevant planetary return, makesit perfect for our purposes, but, moreimportantly, it highlights a numberof crucial chart features. First, natalChiron in Capricorn impacts the3rd house of communication, associatedwith Mercury, which is, significantly,and perhaps not surprisingly, natallyretrograde; Jupiter is in Gemini, one oftwo signs which Mercury rules, and asign of its detriment by essential dignity.Hence, this is a weakened Jupiter,further debilitated by the inharmoniousquincunx to Chiron. Moreover, natalJupiter also co-rules the 3rd house(Sagittarius on the 3rd house cusp).

Chiron similarly opposes the tripleconjunction of Sun, Mars, and Uranusin Cancer in the 9th house; these canbe viewed as signifiers of the masculineenergy in a woman’s chart. is opposi-tion suggests historical difficulties withthe male figures in her life. Chiron,too, is in Capricorn, ruled by Saturn,which can also be representative of aparticular patriarchal male energy,often linked to the religious energy ofthe 9th house. It is also involved withthe three 9th house planets in aT-square with Saturn and Neptunein Libra as the focal point.

Weakened Jupiter is the naturalruler of the 9th; thus Chiron strikesat Jupiter both directly by aspect and

indirectly by house rulership.Chiron the wounder is far and awaythe pre-dominant entity in the chart,and its influence would have beenquite profound at the time of theconsultation.

All of the above dynamics indicatesevere issues revolving around thethroat chakra, probably stemming fromdisempowerment by the male energy.In fact, during the course of thedemonstration, I muscle-tested thisperson’s chakras, and the throat chakrawas particularly weak.

Another aspect of this chart thatstrikes me as especially significant, inthat it ties directly into the relevantquincunx, is an emphasis upon factorsthat relate to the Wood element inChinese medicine. e planet Jupiter isconsidered to have dominion over theliver in Western astrology; similarly,the Chinese associate Jupiter with theWood element and connect it with boththe Liver and the Gall Bladder (althoughEbertin links the Liver meridian withMercury and the Gall Bladder meridianwith Saturn).

As we have already indicated, L’s Jupiter is both debilitated in essential

dignities (in the sign of its detriment,Gemini) and further weakened by itsquincuntial relationship to Chiron,which, as previously stipulated, I tend toconsider a malefic. Moreover, Chiron isin the 3rd house of L’s chart, which islikewise linked with the Liver inEbertin’s meridian layout.

As we know, the elements inChinese medicine have a vast range ofcorrespondences, ranging from organsystems to colors to tastes to seasons.ey also have emotional correlates.In the case of the Wood element, thecharacteristic emotion is anger. Withthe Wood element signatures in herchart so challenged, it seems quiteunlikely that L could have had an easytime with expressing that particularemotion; this is echoed by the stressfulaspect patterns with those chartelements that signify masculinearchetypes. Women have historicallysuppressed their anger at their

disenfranchisement by men, so as toavoid censure and violent retribution.If my suppositions about her personalhistory are correct, she would havefelt extremely disempowered by herupbringing. Moreover, at the time ofher consultation, she was also involvedin a marriage in which she reportedthat she received no mirroring forher identity and endeavors.

e inability to express anger canmanifest itself through two distinctpsychological maladaptations; the firstis depression, in which the individualdamps down personal “fire” so asto avoid connecting with thenegative emotion, and the secondis passive-aggressive types of behavior,which one would tend to associate withco-dependent relationships.

It is interesting to note, given thenative’s pronounced stellium, i.e.,grouping of planets, in the 9th house(attributed in Western astrology toJupiter, through its rulership over thesign Sagittarius), that Ebertin assignsJupiter to the 9th house and the Spleen.While the Chinese consider the Spleen,as an organ of digestion, to relate to theEarth element and the emotion ofworry, the Western tradition likewiseassociates anger with the Spleen,hence our word “splenetic,” whichmeans irritable, or irascible, having a“short fuse.”

e network of symbolic relation-ships derived from a consideration of

both systems points unapologetically toanger, and the concomitant emotionaltoxicity, as being problematic for L; but,in my consultations with her, sheseemed quite placid and resigned.We could also note the placement inCapricorn, ruled by Saturn, as beingrelevant to the more yang aspect of theWood element, the Gall Bladder, associ-ated with Saturn in Western astrologicalparlance. is inhibition of the “outer”expression of the emotional terrainof Wood, signaled by the Chironplacement, would be consistent withL’s inability to give voice to her frustra-tions. However, as the week progressed,her seemingly innocent transgression ofanother individual’s boundaries during

a treatment session served as thecatalyst for a tremendous outburst ofanger within the group that threatenedto derail the entire seminar, andboomeranged back at her.

I should point out, as well, that,consistent with the symbolism ofoppositions, considered to relate to thepsychological mechanism of projection,rather than confront her own rage andwounded throat chakra (Chiron in the3rd house), she manifested it outwardlyin the larger context of the retreat,which was, most assuredly, a 9th housetype of milieu, characterized by spiritualteaching and learning. e explosivenature of this event can certainly beattributed to the effects of theMars/Uranus conjunction in Cancer, apotent combination which in simpleterms could be translated as a sudden,unexpected manifestation of anger inan otherwise nurturing environment(Cancer).

At the time, not yet havingdiscovered Ebertin’s meridianal housesystem, I merely employed Chiron inmy demonstration/treatment. Now itseems incontrovertible that theJupiter/Chiron tuning fork combina-tion, representative of this stressfularchetypal configuration, might perhapshave served better for addressing theunderlying psychospiritual componentsof the natal Chiron aspect pattern.

It is perhaps not beyond the purviewof this article to report that, despitethe traumatic experience of the groupcensure of which she was the recipienton this particular occasion, the ultimateresults of our work together proved to

be quite transformative. In subsequentmeetings, L reported an expansion ofher work as a veterinarian into theequine arena (as I had suggested), a logical extension of the Chironinfluence (Chiron as co-“ruler” of thevocational 10th house1).

She also reported that she hadbegun singing, which I could only viewas a strong indication that the throatchakra had begun to open in a positiveand life-affirming way.

Perhaps even more significantly,when she returned home, she readilyassumed the role of a spokesperson forher community, speaking in public at acrucial planning commission meeting;the community was facing a battlewith million-dollar developers whichwould severely impact their qualityof life. is was indeed a remarkabledevelopment, particularly in light ofthe fact that, rather than defend herselfduring that earlier, very unpleasant,confrontation, L had fled rather thanspeak her truth.

In the wake of this significant claim-ing of the power of the throat, L beganto have a lot of neck and throat issues,which caused her to have to wear acervical collar; she may have had a senseof what was to transpire over the nextcouple of months. When I had seenher for our initial consultation, I toldher that I felt that she was receivingshort shrift in her relationship and

deserved better. At the time, she wasnot prepared to give voice to theinequities and wounding involved inthe partnership.

CONCLUSIONWhile I have only presented two

case studies here, my exposure to aplethora of students’ charts whileteaching my elective seminars for theKairos Institute (and those of my privateclients) has continued to providecompelling support for this unorthodoxapproach to the medical topographyof the natal chart, one which iscomparatively accessible to theastrological neophyte in the initialtussles with the complex symbolismof the horoscope. An added benefit is,of course, that the practitioner whochooses to employ the Western chartas a diagnostic tool in this mannercan readily transmogrify archetypal

planetary disharmony into a combina-tion of healing frequencies, an inter-planetary interval, embodied in acombination of two tuning forks, whichcan then be applied directly to the bodyvia the vibratory energetic landscape ofOriental Medicine.

Why can the simple extraction of aquincuntial signature from the welter ofchart symbolism yield such potentiallydynamic results? We could speculatethat, on some level, the quincunxrecapitulates in an encapsulated formthe archetypal terrain of larger-scaleaspect patterns in a given horoscope,or that the harmonization of its height-ened energetic dissonance by the practi-tioner (through what we might term a

“homeopathic” approach of “like”curing “like”) must surely “resonate”throughout the entire map.

Perhaps a clue may also be dis-cerned in the nature of the “prototypi-cal” quincunx; in the array of 12 housesin the chart wheel, quincunxes initiallyoccur between planets in the 1st houseand the 6th house, as well as 1sthouse/8th house. In the iconographyof medical astrology, the 1st houseis considered synonymous with theindividual, i.e., the body; in contrast,the 6th house, the house of healing, isalso the house of the disease. e 8th,the house of death, is also that oftransformation. In attempting todecode this symbolism, we might offer
