Dear Aultman Community,

We are once again pleased to report the activities of the Department of Medical Education.

I am proud of the efforts on the part of Graduate Medical Education, Undergraduate Medical

Education and pipeline programs to advance our mission: “Educating today’s physicians

through lifelong learning for the challenges of tomorrow.”

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) has developed new

requirements intended to assure that quality in clinical performance, communication

skills, performance improvement and professionalism are being taught and outcomes

are measured in all of our programs. Our program faculties have successfully addressed

curriculum issues and practice measurements while continually assuring a supportive

clinical learning environment.

The ACGME has also recognized the increase in physician burnout that reaches down to

the resident and medical student levels. Our programs have responded to the reality of

professional burnout through changes in the curriculum, education regarding burnout, and

communication of resources to assist those personally in need.

I hope that you will take a few minutes to become acquainted with the accomplishments of

each of our programs at all levels of education. We recognize that all of you have contributed

to the success of these programs and acknowledge the contributions that these learners

currently make to our community. We know they will continue to do so as providers on our

Medical Staff in the future—and for that we express our ongoing gratitude!

DEVELOPING THE NEXT GENERATION

Aultman’s Department of Medical Education structures rotations and learning opportunities for medical students

along with residents and medical staff physicians. Aultman is affiliated with Northeast Ohio Medical University

(NEOMED) and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM). We also offer rotations, based on availability, to

international medical students from ROSS, SABA and American University of the Caribbean.

UNDERGRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION

The department contributes to NEOMED in all four years of medical school training, starting with Introduction to

Clinical Medicine (ICM) in the first and second years (M1 and M2). Dr. Brophy supervised the teaching of history-

taking and physical examination for 24 M1’s and 24 M2’s this year from August through May.

Aultman offered four core clerkships in the third year (M3’s) under the leadership of clerkship directors. These include

Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics/Gynecology and Surgery. Fourth year medical students (M4’s) choose

senior electives. Table 1 indicates the number of students who have had clinical experiences at Aultman Hospital in

the last 3 years.

THE CANTON CONNECTION

The Canton Connection is a program which is sponsored by the Aultman Medical Education Department. Medical

students from the greater Canton area, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels, are invited to meet

throughout the year with the faculty and physicians from Aultman Hospital. These meetings offer an opportunity for

students to network, build relationships, and understand more about the various aspects of the medical field from

the perspective of experienced area physicians. These meetings are intended to assist students as they prepare for

their careers in medicine. This year, the meetings focused on transitioning from undergraduate to medical school, and

from medical school to residency.

In summary, our goal is to develop future doctors who will ultimately contribute to the medical staff and the community, and to inspire all students towards lifelong learning.

GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION: 2016-2017

Upon completion of medical school training, each student enters into post-graduate training in the specialty of his/

her choice through residency training. Aultman Hospital offers residencies in family medicine, internal medicine,

obstetrics/gynecology and radiology. It also sponsors a cardiovascular fellowship program. These specialty-training

programs bring physicians with the most current medical knowledge into our patient-care teams.

Of Aultman’s 2017 graduating residents/fellows:

30 residents/fellows graduated, having successfully accomplished all required competencies

12 graduates were accepted into fellowship training

8 graduates are employed as hospitalists

9 graduates entered a group/private practice

2 graduates stayed in the area: one joining a practice and the other becoming a hospitalist with Aultman

Residency/fellowship programs are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

In July 2016, the ACGME conducted a site visit for the Cardiovascular fellowship program. The program received

“Continued Accreditation,” its first full accreditation since the inception of the program. The status of “Continued

Accreditation” is also maintained by all residency programs.

Graduate medical education has made great advances in support of resident/fellow research. A website has been

designed to assist individuals who are interested in conducting research projects. The site itemizes how to proceed

with a project for approval by the Human Research Review Board, the oversight body. Additional resources are

available for our residents and fellows including statistical support and lectures on research projects. A statistical

software program, SPSS Statistics, was “implemented,” thus providing an additional tool to assist the residents and

fellows.

On March 8, 2017, Medical Education sponsored the faculty development conference “Making Your Feedback

Matter: Techniques and Tips for the Medical Educator.” We sponsor programs annually which contribute to a quality

educational experience for our residents and fellows. This was attended by 46 faculty and residents.

FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY TRAINING: BUILDING THE MEDICAL COMMUNITY

The Aultman Family Medicine Residency Program,

affiliated with Northeastern Ohio Medical University

(NEOMED), offers a comprehensive education in

Family Medicine emphasizing the management

and treatment of patients of all ages who present

to our clinical practices. A whole person approach

is emphasized with the incorporation of patient

and family values into our ongoing assessment

and treatment plans. Our curriculum is designed to

develop our residents’ expertise in the care of our

patients through health promotion, office procedures

and behavioral aspects of care, as well as the

treatment of acute and chronic illnesses in several

health care settings. Residents manage patients in

a wide variety of settings, including the hospital,

emergency department, nursing home, the patient’s

home and outpatient settings. After an emphasis

on inpatient care in the first year of the program,

residents transition to a predominantly outpatient-

oriented experience in the third year with increasing

responsibility of care of their patient panels. Continuity

of care and behavioral medicine in our patient

population are stressed in the Family Medicine Center.

Our Family Medicine Residency Program is accredited

by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical

Education (ACGME) with our most recent site visit in

December 2011. We were notified in May 2012 that we

received the maximum accreditation of five years. The

ACGME has since transitioned to a new accreditation

system, Next Accreditation System (NAS), and our

program’s accreditation site visit has been replaced with

a Self-Study Visit which is scheduled for May 1, 2022.

Ongoing data submission is required.

Family Medicine residents and faculty are actively

involved in the Stark County Health Department

Reproductive Health & Wellness Clinic, the Hartville

Migrant Clinic, and Planned Parenthood Stark County

Office. We encourage ongoing QI projects and

research areas for all of our residents. The residents

and faculty recently completed a hypertension quality

improvement project.

On June 23, 2017, the Family Medicine Residency

Program celebrated the graduation of eight more

residents. This brings the total number of graduates to

240. Two of the graduates from this year are practicing

in Canton, OH. One entered private practice and

another resident joined the Aultman Hospitalist Group.

The Aultman Family Medicine Residency Program’s

mission is to promote an environment of intellectual

curiosity that produces exceptional family physicians

who provide comprehensive, evidence-based,

compassionate patient-centered care. The Canton

office is currently working to become a Federally

Qualified Health Center (FQHC) and currently functions

as a Patient-Centered Medical Home.

At the 28th Annual Resident Research Day, Drs.

Syed Zain Ali and Emmanuel Otomewo received

first place for their poster presentation “Code

Status Documentation QI” and Dr. Gaymes received

second place for her poster presentation “Pharmacy

Medication Reconciliation Visits in the Primary Care

Setting.” Dr. Kriti Arora received second place for

her oral presentation “Increasing Compliance with

Postpartum Follow-up for Gestational Diabetes.” Dr.

Arora also received the Peer Choice award for her

oral presentation.

INTERNAL MEDICINE RESIDENCY

Canton Medical Education Foundation (CMEF)

Internal Medicine Residency Program is committed

to developing internists who are well-prepared to

join practice or fellowship after training. Many of our

graduates join hospitalist medicine or primary care

practices in the Canton hospitals and surrounding

communities. Others have continued training in

a medicine subspecialty fellowship. Of our 2017

graduates, three are receiving further training in

Nephrology and one in Palliative Care & Hospice

Medicine. We continue to provide a community-

based training experience that is both rigorous and

patient-centered, while maintaining a welcoming

learning environment.

To begin the academic year, our program was one

of the first in the country to experience the newest

process for accreditation of training programs, the

Next Accreditation System (NAS). Volunteering as a

site for Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical

Education’s (ACGME) Pilot Self-Study, we underwent

a review of our internal quality improvement work and

learning environment. It was an honor to be selected

to participate in the development of this process

which is now being applied to all residencies across

the nation.

One hundred percent of our current core faculty

have graduated from NEOMED’s Fellowship in

Academic Medicine (FAME) program. We are

increasing our footprint at NEOMED and are enjoying

productivity in scholarly activity. Drs. Kevin Frey

and Aarthi Rajkumar were named to the Master

Teacher’s Guild this year. Dr. Frey has collaborated

with NEOMED’s Assistant Dean for Students, Dr.

Paul Lecat, to bring an innovative physical diagnosis

curriculum to Canton. Both Drs. Rajkumar and Frey

have successfully mentored residents to publish their

work in peer-reviewed journals. Drs. Bolyard and

Narayanan were invited to teach a workshop about

their Business in Medicine outpatient curriculum

pilot study, “CMEF Mini-MIPS,” at the Alliance

for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM) Skills and

Leadership Conference this fall.

Looking ahead, we are growing our Business in

Medicine “CMEF Mini-MIPS” project in the next

academic year. After conducting the successful

pilot, our Quality Chief Residents are helping lead

an expanded program to teach residents about the

reality of pay-for-performance, while targeting more

clinical outcomes improvement measures in our

ambulatory settings.

RADIOLOGY

The Aultman Radiology Residency is an integrated

program with Mercy Medical Center and is a four-year

program with four residents in each postgraduate

year. Residents spend four rotations at Akron

Children’s Hospital and attend year long lecture

series. Residents enter after having trained one year

in a rotating general medicine internship such as a

Transitional Year Residency.

The twelve milestones with outcome measures

composed by the Accreditation Council of Graduate

Medical Education (ACGME) have been incorporated

into the residency curriculum. The milestones ensure

residents achieve competency in the six designated

areas of Medical Knowledge, Professionalism, Patient

Care, Interpersonal Communication, Practice-based

Learning and System-based Practice.

A formalized two-year lecture series in the ten

subspecialty areas of Radiology, in compliance with

RRC requirements, is provided for the residents. In

addition to the formalized lecture series, a business

module consisting of six lectures are provided to the

residents. Subscriptions to STAT DX and RADPRIMER,

web-based programs, provide the residents the

opportunity to review films and provide the staff

the means of “testing” the residents’ progress. The

residency program also subscribes to E-Anatomy, a

web-based program to aid residents in their education.

Radiology residents attend the Radiologic-Pathology

Correlation Course (AIRP) sponsored by the American

College of Radiology (ACR). The Radiology residents

are spending two weeks at Cleveland Clinic Foundation

in Cleveland to provide them with the exposure to

more cardiac procedures and exams. The Radiology

residents are also spending two weeks at Aultman

Maternal-Fetal Medicine to provide them with

the exposure to more second and third trimester

ultrasound and high-risk obstetric patients. A Radiology

resident, who has matched to an Interventional

Radiology fellowship, will be rotating in Vascular

Surgery for four weeks.

The program has applied for an ESIR program, a

dedicated program within the diagnostic radiology

residency which specializes in interventional

radiology preparation.

Beginning July 1, 2017, a web-based program, New

Innovations, is being utilized to track conference

attendance, duty hour compliance, rotation evaluations,

resident portfolio, faculty and resident evaluation,

resident self-assessment and milestone mapping.

The resident involvement in scholarly activities

continues to progress. There were five poster

presentations at the 28th Annual Aultman Research

Day. Radiology residents have also made three

presentations nationally.

Radiology residents continue to excel. Dr. Mohammad

Gharavi was awarded the Annual RSNA Research

Award. Dr. Sunpreet Tandon was also awarded the

Radiology Resident of the Year Award. Graduating

residents went to Massachusetts General Hospital,

Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA for an

Interventional Radiology Fellowship; University of

Maryland, Baltimore, MD, for a Neuroradiology

fellowship; Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD

for a Body Imaging Fellowship; and Aultman Hospital,

Canton, OH for a Breast Imaging Fellowship.

Faculty are recognized for their commitment to

teaching, and the following were named Teacher of the

Year: Dr. Michael Markovic - Aultman; Dr. Pratish Shah

– Mercy; and Dr. Shankar Ganapathy – Akron Children’s

Medical Center. Andrew Congdon, RRA, Aultman,

was awarded the Resident Appreciation Award for

Ancillary Staff.

OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY

Our obstetrics and gynecology residency at Aultman is proud to have been accredited to train physicians in

women’s health since 1946. Over the past seventy-one years, we have created a tradition of embedding learners in

an environment of scholarly and clinical excellence. We strive to train physicians of the future, while honoring the

traditions of sharing knowledge and human wisdom which are alive and well in our residency program.

Our program is thriving under leadership of Dr. Prab Gill, who has a regional reputation as a passionate educator with

numerous publications and distinctions. Dr. Krew and Dr. Hoppe act as associate and assistant program directors.

Dr. Gill is a seasoned Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist and is Chair and Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology

at Northeast Ohio Medical University, the local medical school with which our program is affiliated. Our outpatient

experience is guided by Drs. Kiko and Vassas, who are seasoned academic specialists in comprehensive obstetrics

and gynecology.

In the concluded academic year, we were proud of four of our residents presenting their scholarly projects at national

CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

The three-year Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship Program at Aultman Hospital encompasses a broad range

of cardiovascular disease. The educational goal is to produce clinically sound, well-rounded and compassionate

cardiologists. They will provide state-of-the-art and evidence-based care to a wide range of patient populations.

Fellows will integrate technological advances, clinical skills, knowledge base and information technology for

diagnosis, prevention and treatment of a wide spectrum of cardiovascular disease.

The Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship Program completed their first three-year cycle with having two

graduating fellows. The faculty and fellows have focused on creating a robust educational environment and in

May 2017, the American College of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) approved the request to increase the

fellow complement to three fellows per academic year. This will go into effect for the 2017-18 first-year fellows.

Along with the accredited fellow increase, we now have two non-accredited fellows.

Due to the cardiovascular department’s increasing volume over the last three years, the fellows have

ample opportunity to care for patients in all of the required settings and acquire expertise in all the required

procedures. The faculty have increased their involvement in scholarly activity, and the program director

and four out of five key clinical faculty were actively involved in abstracts, presentations or publications

accepted in peer reviewed journals and national meetings. The fellows work along with the Cardiovascular

Consultants faculty associated with Aultman Hospital. The faculty specialize in electrophysiology, interventional

cardiology, peripheral vascular disease, nuclear cardiology, echocardiography and clinical cardiology. These

experienced clinicians provide the fellows opportunities to practice as competent, board certified consultants in

cardiovascular disease or to pursue specialized disciplines of cardiovascular disease training.

PATIENT SAFETY AND QUALITY HIGHLIGHTS

In the first year of training, residents completed Quality

and Patient Safety education modules from the Institute

of Healthcare Improvement (IHI). The IHI takes a unique

approach of working with hospitals and other health care

systems on improving quality, safety and value in health care.

This year the IHI added a module on using “PDSA” (Plan,

Do, Study, Act). This walks a resident through the process of

completing a quality improvement project to achieve a goal.

New residents and fellows go through the High Reliability

Organization (HRO) training as part of their orientation. Residents

and fellows have been active participants in Aultman’s ongoing

journey to become a high reliability organization.

The Quality Department has held several educational sessions

for the residents about the importance of variance reporting,

the diverse ways one can report, and the non-punitive nature of reporting. Since these sessions, the goal of

increasing reporting has been met and the number of variances submitted by residents has significantly increased.

Several residents have also participated in root cause analysis investigations.

In order to improve the resident/fellow hand-offs, a Transition of Care (TOC) committee was formed, consisting

of residents, fellows and faculty. A hand-off tool based on SBARCSS (Situation-Background-Assessment-

Recommendation-Code Status-Summary-Supervise) was developed. Hand-off competency check sheets were

implemented.

The Aultman Physician Center houses the outpatient continuity practices for the residencies. Our Family Medicine,

Internal Medicine and OB/GYN residents provide preventive, acute, prenatal and chronic health care. They also

perform outpatient procedures. These practices provide a significant service to the uninsured and underinsured

residents of Stark County.

The residency continuity practices are in the process of transformation to become a Federally Qualified Health Center

(FQHC) look-alike, and will operate under the name of My Community Health Center (MCHC). MCHC is committed

to providing high-quality care and contributing to the excellent education of our residents. As an FQHC, MCHC’s

mission “to provide compassionate care to all, healing and learning together” demonstrates the important balance

between resident education and quality of care to those most in need in our area.

CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION: 2017

Aultman Hospital is accredited by the Ohio State Medical Association (OSMA) to provide Continuing Medical

Education (CME) programs that meet the needs and interests of the medical staff in our community and network

service area for every physician’s continued success. In 2016, Aultman Hospital Medical Education received a six-year

accreditation with “commendation” from the OSMA. This is the third consecutive time that Aultman received the

maximum of six years. The OSMA noted “this is a super, well organized and well documented program.”

In 2016, twenty-seven activities and six regularly scheduled conference series (RSC) were sponsored for a total

of 154 instruction hours. These were attended by 2,111 physicians and 1,261 non-physicians. The use of the

competency assessment forms was the most common tool to measure change in physician competence.

guidelines for cancer, the role of integrative oncology for cancer patients, intraoperative radiation therapy

for breast cancer and advances in the treatment of ovarian cancer, neuroendocrine malignancies and brain

metastases. More than 50 physicians attended the half day symposium.

• The Perinatal Department sponsored:

• The following transport conferences were taken to area hospitals such as Aultman Orrville, Alliance

Community, Pomerene, Union and SE Ohio Regional Medical Center.

• Maternal Morbidity and Mortality (with a focus on the hemorrhage bundle)

• And with Proper Medication, They Lived Happily Ever After

• The 12th Annual Perinatal Symposium was held on November 11, 2016 with 110 physicians and non-

physicians in attendance.

• The challenges in healthcare today create a special need for great physician leadership. In response to this need,

the Medical Staff Office provided an annual Physician Leadership Summit for those physicians in leadership

roles.

• The MSO assisted physicians and other healthcare workers with Improving Clinical Documentation by

sponsoring four offerings on the topic.

• Regularly scheduled conferences were available:

• Multidisciplinary Breast Tumor Conference I was held on the second, fourth, and fifth Friday mornings of every

month.

• Multidisciplinary Breast Tumor Conference II was held on the first and third Thursday afternoons of every month.

• Multidisciplinary Thoracic Tumor Conference was held on the first and third Wednesday mornings of every month.

• Multidisciplinary Tumor Board Conference was held every Friday morning.

Aultman jointly sponsored Alliance Hospital’s tumor boards as a regularly scheduled conference series. Twelve

sessions were held with 82 physicians attending.
