APPENDIX: SIG SESSION BRIEFS Scientists The Past, Present and Future of CF care, diagnostics and research in Australia Moderators: Dr Martin Donnelley and Dr Nigel Farrow

What: The goal of the Scientists SIG is to have an informal discussion about where CF science has come from, where we are at, and where we are going to go in the future. Some specific discussion points include, but are not limited to:

• What are we currently doing well in research and diagnostics?

• What are the current issues, including funding opportunities, training of new staff and researchers?

• What’s new in CF research, pulmonary function testing, microbiology, etc? What are the emerging technologies likely to alter CF diagnosis and treatment?

• Where will we be in 5, 10 20 years’ time? Will CF be cured? Is a cure needed, or will treatment options improve?

• How can CF scientists in Australia collaborate and communicate better? Do people need and want this?

• Can we improve the NHMRC Project Grant funding rate for CF research? What about the new research funds available from the USACFF?

Who: Many SIG’s are very focussed, but we recognise that the Scientists at the Australian CF Conference have a diverse range of backgrounds, skills and interests. This session is aimed at all scientists involved in any aspect of CF, including those in pulmonary function testing, laboratory diagnostics, and research.

Page 25: Medical & Scientific Program 11th Australasian Cystic Fibrosis … · 2019-02-24 · 1 Medical & Scientific Program 11th Australasian Cystic Fibrosis Conference Sunday 16th August

25

Format: The session will be informal, and conducted in a round-table format. What you will get out of it: An interesting morning of discussions about CF science, and its future in Australia and worldwide. An opportunity to meet new people, put a face to others in CF science, and form new collaborations. What do you need to prepare: All participants should have a 2-3 minute verbal introduction prepared, outlining who you are, where you work, why you’re here, and what your “thing” or goal in CF is. If you have been a recipient of CF Australia Funding (e.g. Research Grant or PhD top-up, etc), then we’d like to hear what you have done with it. If you have an issue that we can add to the list above then please advise the moderators and bring it along to the meeting. Contact details: [email protected] [email protected]
