Lakeville at a Glance
Lakeville is the fastest growing city in Dakota County following a nearly 14% increase in population from 2010-2017. Of the 15 largest cities in the Twin Cities, only Maple Grove had a higher growth rate during this period than Lakeville. Located approximately 20 miles south of both downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul, approximately 64,300 called Lakeville home in 2018.
Officially recognized as a municipality of the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area in 1967, Lakeville is a south metro city conveniently located along Interstate 35 with ample land for development. In 2018 and for the sixth consecutive year, Lakeville issued more residential permits than any other city in the Twin Cities metro. Lakeville issued permits for nearly $250 million worth of developments and building activity in 2018, the third most active year in the city’s roughly 50-year history. Through April 2019, Lakeville had issued well-over 50% more residential permits than the next top city.
Lakeville is home to one of six reliever airports in
Minnesota, Airlake Airport, which is mainly used by recreational pilots.
Largely built on manufacturing jobs and home to one of the largest industrial parks in Minnesota, Lakeville has seen a more diverse employer mix enter the city in recent years. Though the southern border of Lakeville continues to see largescale manufacturing/industrial growth from both new and existing companies, retail trade employment surpassed manufacturing in 2018 and now makes up the largest portion of total jobs in Lakeville (16%). The various Lakeville stakeholders attribute the realized and future growth to a vast number of amenities within the city, including but not limited to the over 1,600 acres of public parks and pedestrian trails, multiple lakes, and three school districts serving Lakeville residents.
Though Lakeville and Dakota County have significantly lower property taxes than Hennepin County, the lack of existing infrastructure and transportation improvements are two of the largest
obstacles for continued growth and development in the city. In order to keep anticipated development and growth on track in the city, Lakeville will continue its push for more financial assistance and infrastructure investment from State, Federal, and regional governments. Today, most traffic flows into the city via I-35 southbound at County Roads 46 & 60, and from the northern cities of Burnsville and Apple Valley. The Metro Red Line, which currently operates between the Mall of America in Bloomington and the Apple Valley Transit Station, is considering an extension of the bus route further south along Cedar Ave in Lakeville. With most future residential development occurring on the eastern side of Lakeville away from I-35, the five future stops will alleviate expected congestion in the area.
