Course Description: This two-day course is an overview of interventions that medical-surgical nurses use to promote quality of life for their clients. Using the nursing process to enhance physical and psychological well-being in clients and their significant others is inherent in the role of the medical-surgical nurse. Taking this course will provide those taking the medical-surgical certification exam with information necessary for success. This course is also ideal for RN’s who are new to the specialty, those re-entering the field who desire a refresher course or for RN’s transitioning from another area into medical-surgical nursing. Learning Outcome: After completing this learning activity, the participant will have validated basic foundational knowledge and concepts of medical-surgical nursing and improved preparedness for the CMSRN exam.

Faculty

Leisa Kelly is the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) for the Medical and Post-Surgical Divisions at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She received her Associate degree from Miami University (of Ohio), Bachelor's degree from Otterbein College, and Master’s degree from Ohio State University. She has practiced in a variety of settings including emergency department and medical-surgical nursing. As a CNS, Leisa promotes evidence-based practice through interdisciplinary collaboration, staff nurse education and participation in research projects. Her personal interests include emergency, med-surg nursing and care of the geriatric patient. She was the recipient of the Clinical Practice Nurse Research of the Year (2013) and Advance Practice Registered Nurse (2015) at the Annual Louisiana ANA Nightingale Awards. She most recently in 2017 was selected to the Great 100 Nurses in Louisiana. Leisa is a current member of Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN), American Nurses Association (ANA), Emergency Nurses Association (ENA), and Sigma Theta Tau.
