Meet the Anglo-Saxons
A web quest to supplement background lectures in an Early
British Literature survey course that is focused on translation
The Course
• Early British Literature Survey Style
oWith a focus on Translation
oLots of material to cover in a short time
• The Web Quest will create more in class time
Why Save Time?
• Many of the texts being read in this survey course are being read in translation
• Translators usually interpret the text one way
• The problems of translation
must be taught along side with the text
Grendel's Mother and Translation
• Translators call her a monster
• Many but not all scholars say the original text does not
• Students decide for themselves
• Three Translations• Thanks to the web quest
we can talk about it.
Why a Web Quest?• The web quest will familiarize
students with the Anglo-Saxon Period.
o The instructor will spend less time lecturing about it
o More time for in-class discussion
• Students will improve their research skills
In the Web Quest, the students will...
• Study specific aspects of the Anglo-Saxon periodo the role of women o how the political system workedo the language the the the text was written ino the religions practiced by the anglo-saxons and
the role it played in their lives
• Learn of places where they can find reliable information
• Be guided by questions that will help them interpret the material
Websites the students visit will include:
• BBC History
• UMB Library
• Anglo-Saxon Aloud
• Google searches

A Place for Discovery - I can't literally my students out digging for artifacts, but I can send them to the internet to hunt for resources.
