This is being written in Chicago,where I have just finished my firsttrip around the annual PhotographicTrade Show which opened today at theConrad Hilton Hotel. All majorAmerican and foreign manufacturersare represented, and dealers arehere from every part of North Amer-ica.

The entire show is impressive,and a really convincing demonstra-tion of the growth and strength ofthe Photographic Industry. The 170exhibits and hundreds of productsare evidence that our industry isprogressing rapidly.

I am happy to report that here,with all of our competition aroundus, Argus looks great. Our largeexhibit (side by side with the Syl-vania Photolamp Division display) hasattracted a full capacity of dealersever since the show opened. Mostimportant, the dealers are really ex-cited about our new products. Weand our distributors have about 45salesmen working at the show, andthey are busy demonstrating andwriting orders.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD?

This, of course, is the big ques-tion in all business today, and Iknow each of us at Argus is inter-ested in the answer personally. Atthis show, and at our sales meetingduring the past several days, thegeneral feeling has been one of con-fidence in our economy and beliefthat an upswing will soon start.

Of course, we at Argus have onlya small influence on the countryTstotal economy, but our goal is to getan increased share of all of the cam-era and projector sales which aremade. With our new product pro-gram well underway, I am sure weare on the track.

SOME NEW PRODUCT FACTS

This issue of Argus Eyes presentsdetails on each of our new productsintroduced in Chicago today. How-ever, you may be interested in someof the background thinking and rea-

soning behind several of the newmodels.

The Match-Matic C3 is far morethan a Mnew look" for our most fam-ous product. The Match-Matic sys-tem is an entirely new concept ofsimplified photography. This newease of use means that for the firsttime a fine quality color-slide cam-era is available to the thousands ofpeople who have had no photographicexperience. This should create anew and large market for Argus

The M5Q0 8mm Movie Projectoris a fine example of what can be ac-complished through Argus-Sylvaniateamwork.. .with the M500 featuringthe revolutionary new Sylvania Tru-Flector projection lamp. This isour first product in the 8mm moviefield.. .a market that has a greatersales potential than the 35mm fieldwhere we have confined our effortsin the past.

The M500 is not just another movieprojector. It is truly new. ..offersnew features and greater value tocustomers.. .sets new standards forthe industry. In introducing theM500, Argus has made an importantmove toward leadership in anothersegment of the photographic busi-ness. The dealers I have talked totoday are enthused about this prod-uct.

The V100 is a fine German-madecamera added to our line to fill aspecial slot in the camera marketwhere we have not previously beenin contention. This market consistsof customers who specifically wantan imported camera with specialfeatures. The price range and fea-tures are enough different from ourtop cameras to make the V100 non-competitive with the C44, while add-ing to our sales strength and posi-tion with retail dealers. It meansplus business.

The new Argus products introducedtoday represent months of great ef-fort by many people in our organiza-tion. I personally know of many in-stances where extra effort was madeto expedite this program. Our ap-preciation and congratulations go toevery one who contributed to the

successful introduction of these newproducts in Chicago today. I THINKWE STOLE THE SHOW THIS YEAR.

Now, our next job is to get pro-duction underway rapidly, and toget these products in the hands ofcustomers while Argus salesmen anddealers have a real head of steambuilt up. Our competitors are notasleep. They, too, introduced manynew products, and they wont let usinto new markets without a fight.

We have to keep our costs com-petitive to permit selling at the low-est prices consistent with the high-quality standards we insist upon; andwe have to follow up with other at-tractive, competitive products assoon as possible. These many chal-lenges should keep us busy formonths to come.

Here, at last is a really fine camera that is just aseasy to set as a clock. The Match-Matic exposuresetting system is designed to appeal to people whoknow absolutely nothing about photography, and whodon't want to have to learn. All f:stops and fractionalshutter speeds have been replaced by plain numbers,and all "thinking" is done by the clip-on LC3 meter.

HERE'S HOW IT WORKS -When setting the camera, the user merely selects

BIRTH OF A NEW PRODUCT

We start by getting the idea down on paper.Often a proposal proves unsuitable or imprac-tical at this stage and is shelved for furtherstudy. Many are thrown out, but some ideasreally gather momentum once they are seenin this dimension. An aid at this first stageis Market Research which helps determine ifa profitable market exists for the product.

Tooling is a key step. To manufacture partsmachine and glass processing tools are de-signed and built at a cost of many thousandsof dollars. This expense like all the othersinvolved in the development of a new productmust be invested many months before the firstsale of that product is made. Once the toolsare made, revisions for any reason are bothdifficult and costly.

"Pilot Run" time is a chance to see justhow well all of our plans and preparations fittogether to produce actual finished units. Thistry-out assembly line is carefully observed todetect and solve any problems before full-scaleproduction gets underway. Time devoted tothe pilot run pays big dividends in smooth op-erations later on.

Basic styling of most Argus products is performedby Harley Earl and Associates, who also style Gen-eral Motors cars. A number of styling ideas inkeeping with the Argus concept and with considera-tion of the price range are submitted. Many thingsinfluence styling and these early designs are changedmany times before the new camera or projector isput into production.

Quality has always been our middle name here atArgus. However, quality means constant hard andexpensive work by everyone.

When a new product is being developed, the inspec-tion and quality standards must be determined andtesting equipment ordered. The Quality Control De-partment is responsible for coordinating these initialefforts and maintaining the standards during produc-tion.

Testing is a constant part of the entire program,but it reaches the peak when complete pilot run unitsare available. The Technical Services and Develop-ment section of Engineering then takes over to makesure the finished product can take more than any con-sumer can expect. Special devices keep the productgoing through its operation cycle constantly to simu-late the use of more than an average lifetime.

The development of a new Argus product is an important event that effects each of us. Itis a tremendous job, requiring the direct efforts of every department. While there is muchglamour on the day the new products are first shown, the way has been paved with hard workand extra effort.

These photos take you behind the scenes to see some of the key operations involved in pre-paring the new M500 Movie Projector. Actually, space allows us to show only about one-fourth of the activities involved, but this will give you some idea of the work and planning in-volved in the total Argus new product program.

Model Building presents the first real chance tosee what the finished product will look like. Suchwork demands a great deal of skill in the use of manyspecialized machines. This function is carried on intwo areas, one devoted to fashioning the optical com-ponent of the model and the other the melchanicalparts.

Instruction Books are a little known, but high-ly important part of the preparation of a newproduct. This book describes in detail the propermethod of operating the camera or projector. Italso answers many questions on the care andmaintenance of the unit, and provides suggestionsthat will assure satisfaction. This work involvesconsiderable product study and careful writing andillustration.

Purchasing takes over on parts that Argusis not equipped to produce economically. Thesemust be purchased from outside manufacturerswho specialize in making the type of part inquestion. The Purchasing Department coordi-nates the facilities of vendors with our Engi-neering Department.

Manufacturing processes a high percentageof the new product's component parts. Ma-chining, Glass Processing and Finishing arethe three major areas in our parts processingprocedure. Scheduling machine time, deliver-ing raw materials, establishing work standardsand provisions for maintaining quality aresome of the many preparatory jobs of the Man-ufacturing unit.

As our new product moves into Dealers1 stores throughout the country, and into the handsof our customers, one job is finished. But, the big job of new product development con-tinues without even a moment's pause. This job goes on because we must constantly offerthe best, and therefore our goal must always be to improve, to think ahead and to developeven finer cameras and projectors.

tured in Germany for Argus, andto Argus specifications, to ap-peal to customers in the higher-price, import market. The V100puts Argus into a sales field inwhich we previously have notbeen a contender.

The Ann Arbor Camera Club re-cently solicited colored slides fromitTs members for the enjoyment ofthe Veterans at the local VeteransAdministration Hospital. For theshowing and viewing of these slidesthe Argus Camera Employees con-tributed the following equipment tothe Hospital: one Argus 300-WattSlide Projector, four Argus Pre-viewers, one 40 x 40 ProjectionScreen. The Ann Arbor CameraClub supplied a Storage Chest forthe slides and trays to distributethe slides in small groups to thevarious patients.

Alice Mae Riley became the brideof Ronald Douglas Hale on November16, 1957. The wedding took placeat St. Patrick's Catholic Church inBrighton, Michigan. Many of Alice'sfriends at Argus participated in thewedding ceremony and the receptionthat followed in the St. Patrick'sSchool Hall.

The bridegroom is a pilot for theAir Travel Service Company of De-troit. Alice is a secretary in theSales Department.

NIGHT SHIFT BOWLING LEAGUESTANDING SO FAR THIS YEAR

With eight weeks remaining of thebowling season the race for posi-tions are tightening up, with theGreen Hornets still remaining in thetop spot. But only three points be-hind the front running Green Hornetsare two teams, the Tool Room, lastyear's champs, and the Thirsty Fiveteam. Although the season has onlyone-third of the schedule left, thereare half a dozen teams that couldend up in the top position.

Jim Fraser's 276 game (actual)still remains the highest single gamebut one bowler, George Bock, camepretty close to beating Jim with a269 game. George started out witheight in a row, in the ninth framewhich seemed like a pretty good hit,one pin remained and George had tosettle for a spare. In the tenthframe, George got a strike and sparefor 269 pins.

In the high three-game series de-partment, Jim Fraser beat his pre-vious series of 623 with a 650. Hehad games of 233-225-192. Butclose on his heels and giving him afight in this division is Chuck Ren-ner who so far has rolled a three-game series of 631.

In the high average class, ChuckMcClune still remains on top with178 pins per game average. Butonly two pins behind Chuck and don'tcount this fellow out is Jim Fraserwith 176. And the dark horse inthis race and coming up strong isChuck Renner. The outcome of thiscontest is far from being settled.

The Thirsty Five holds the highsingle team game (actual) of 1003and the high team series (actual) of2780. The Forty-Niners has thehigh team series with handicap of2760.

The Men's Day Shift Bowling Ban-quet will be held April 22, 1958 atthe Moose Lodge. Be sure to holdthis date open.
