Greetings from West Lutheran High School! We are pleased to have our Western Accents with you today to edify your worship. This year our students are reflecting on the theme “Hope Sure, Anchor Secure.”

Christian education matters today more than ever. As the morality of society gradually erodes away, our young people are hard-pressed on every side to stay connected to their Savior. In spite of the temptations and hardships that the devil and this world will throw at them, our students are reminded that God’s power and sure promises are on their side. They have the sure hope of heaven as they are safely anchored in their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who will never let them go!

West Lutheran High School exists to use God’s Word to prepare youths as disciples of Christ for dedicated service to their Sav-ior. God’s Word alone has the power to make a difference in the hearts of our students and to guide them along life’s path to eter-nity. This gift of the education from a Christian world-view at West Lutheran allows our students to think clearly and with purpose so that they may be Christ’s witnesses, able to give an answer for the hope that they have.

We pray that the message you hear today from God’s Word anchors you deeper in your faith in Jesus and renews you in your hope of heaven.

WE ARE WEST LUTHERAN

HIGH SCHOOL 2016-2017

(Choir) Verse 2:

Our call to war: to love the captive soul, But to rage against the captor;

And with the sword that makes the wounded whole, We will fight with faith and valor.

When faced with trials on every side, We know the outcome is secure;

And Christ will have the prize for which He died; An inheritance of nations.

(Choir) Verse 3:

Come, see the cross where love and mercy meet, As the Son of God is stricken;

Then see His foes lie crushed beneath His feet, From the Conqueror has risen!

“Praise to the Lord, the Almighty” Hugo Distler ©2013 Arista Music

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of Creation!

O my Soul praise Him, for He is thy health and salvation!

Gather ye round, Let us make music resound!

Praise Him in glad adoration!

Praise to the Lord, Who o’er all things so wondrously reigneth.

Shelters thee under His wings, yea, so gently sustaineth.

Hast thou not seen, how thy heart’s wishes have been

Granted in what He ordaineth?

Stanza 3 – ALL

Praise to the Lord! Oh, let all that is in me adore Him!

All that has life and breath,

come now with praises before Him!

Let the Amen sound from His people again;

Gladly forever adore Him!

Remain seated

CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader (L): O LORD, our Lord,

People (P): how majestic is your name in all the earth!

L: Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name;

C: worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness.

L: Glorify the LORD with me;

C: let us exalt his name together.

L: The name of the LORD is a strong tower:

C: the righteous run to it and are safe.

L: I will exalt you, my God the King;

C: I will praise your name forever and ever.

CONFESSION OF SINS

L: God tells us in his word that “all have sinned and fall short of

the glory of God (Romans 3:23),” and “there is no one who does

good, not even one (Romans 3:12).” Yet our God is gracious and

compassionate. God says, “As surely as I live, declares the

Sovereign LORD, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked,

but rather that they turn from their ways and live (Ezekiel

33:11).” Our God has provided forgiveness for our sins through

his Son. Let us make confession of our sins in the words of

Psalm 51 and receive the assurance of God’s forgiveness in

Christ.

P: Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love;

according to your great compassion, blot out my

transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me

from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is

always before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and

done what is evil in your sight. Surely I was sinful at birth,

sinful from the time my mother conceived me. Hide your face

from my sins and blot out all my iniquity.

CHORAL BENEDICTION

“Abound In Hope” Mark Hayes ©2013 Lorenz Publishing

May the God of hope fill you with joy, the joy that comes from only God,

that you may abound in endless hope, abound in everlasting hope.

May the God of hope fill you with peace, the peace that comes from only God,

that you may abound in endless hope, abound in everlasting hope.

My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.

When all supports are washed away He then is all my hope and stay.

On Christ, the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand!

May the God of hope fill you with grace, the grace that comes from only God,

that you may abound in endless hope, abound in everlasting hope.

CHORAL ANTHEM

“My Soul’s Been Anchored in the Lord” arr. Moses Hogan ©1999 Hal Leonard Corporation

In the Lord. My soul’s been anchored in the Lord. Hallelujah.

Before I’d stay in hell one day, King Jesus took my sins away.

Goin’ shout an’ pray an’ never stop, Until I reach the mountain top.

Do you love Him? Oh yes! Hallelujah! God almighty.

Are you anchored? Oh yes! My soul’s been anchored in the Lord.

Yes, will you serve Him? Oh yes! Hallelujah! Oh yes!

Are you anchored? Oh yes! My soul’s been anchored in the Lord.

Hallelujah! Will you praise Him? Oh yes! Hallelujah! Oh yes!

Are you anchored? Yes, I’m anchored.

Lord, I’m anchored. Lord, I love You. Yes, I’ll serve You.

Lord, I’ll praise You. Hallelujah!

My soul’s been anchored in the Lord.

HYMN OF THE DAY

“Our Hope (O God, Our Help)” ©2016 Hal Leonard Text & Music: Nicole Elsey & Robert Sterling

Based on the text by Isaac Watts

O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come,

Our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home!

Under the shadow of Your throne your saints have lived secure.

Sufficient is Your hand alone, and our defense is sure.

Be our light in this dark’ning world, the strength to face our fears,

Our peace when tumult steals the day,

and our hope throughout the years.

Before the hills in order stood, or earth received her frame,

From everlasting You are God, to endless years the same.

O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come,

Be now our guide while life shall last, and our eternal home!

Refrain – ALL (twice)

MESSAGE

OFFERING / PRAYERS / LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come,

Your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily

bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the

kingdom, the power, and the glory are Yours now and forever.

Amen.

ANTHEM OF CONFESSION

“A Hymn to God the Father” Beck & Courtney ©1989 Beckenhorst Press

Wilt Thou forgive that sin where I begun,

Which is my sin though it were done before?

Wilt Thou forgive that sin through which I run,

And do still run, though still I do deplore?

When Thou hast done, Thou hast not done, for I have more.

Wilt Thou forgive that sin which I have won

Others to sin, and made my sin their door?

Wilt Thou forgive that sin which I did shun

A year or two, but wallowed in a score?

When Thou hast done, Thou hast not done, for I have more.

I have a sin of fear that when I’ve spun

My last thread, I shall perish on the shore;

Swear by Thyself, that at my death Thy Son

Shall shine as He shines now and here-to-fore;

And having done that, Thou hast done, I fear no more.

Please stand

ABSOLUTION L: The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, and

abounding in love (Exodus 34:6). His word promises: “If we

confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our

sins and purify us from all unrighteousness (I John 1:9).” “For

as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love

for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far

has he removed our transgressions from us (Psalm 103:11-12).”

“Thanks be to God--through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (Romans

7:25)

P: Amen.

For when our hearts were far away, Your love went further still.

APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and

earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was

conceived by the Holy Spirit, Born of the virgin Mary, Suffered

under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, died, and was buried. He

descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He

ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the

Father almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and

the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, The holy Christian Church,

The communion of saints, The forgiveness of sins, The resurrection

of the body, And the life everlasting. Amen.

CHORAL ANTHEM

“Witness” Jack Halloran ©1986 Gentry Publications

Who’ll be a witness for my Lord? Oh I’ll be a witness for my Lord.

There was a man of the Pharisees, His name was Nicodemus and he didn’t believe.

The same came to Christ by night, wanted to be taught out of human sight.

Nicodemus was a man who desired to know how a man can be born when he’s old.

Christ told Nicodemus as a friend, “Man, you must be born again.”

He said, “Marvel not, if you want to be wise, repent, believe, and be baptized.”

Then you’ll be a witness for my Lord. Soul is a witness for my Lord.

You read about Samson, from his birth he was the strongest man that ever lived on earth.

Way back yonder in ancient times he killed ten thousand of the Philistines.

Then old Samson went a wand’rin’ about. Samson’s strength was never found out.

‘Till his wife sat upon his knee.

She said, “Tell me where your strength lies, if you please!”

Well, old Samson’s wife, she talked so fair. Samson said, “Cut off a my hair!”

“Shave my head just as clean as your hand,

and my strength will ‘come like a natural man.”

Samson was a witness for my Lord. There’s another witness for my Lord!

My soul is a witness for my Lord!

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH M: Let us pray to the God of all knowledge and wisdom that the Church

may be renewed and strengthened for her mission.

Silent prayer.

M: O Lord, you have revealed your good and gracious will to your people on earth. Forgive us for pursuing that knowledge that serves only our selfish desires and for using what we have learned to exploit and hurt others. Cleanse our guilty hearts of the apathy we feel for searching out the deeper truths of your Word.

C: Holy Spirit, hear our prayer that we may put self aside and re-joice in the truth that builds up.

M: Heavenly Father, send the Spirit of Jesus into our hearts so that like

the Bereans of old we eagerly learn of you. As the deer pants for streams of water, may we be instilled with a longing to explore the mysteries of your grace.

C: Holy Spirit, increase in us the knowledge of your truth.

M: As you sent your Son among us as the Word made flesh, so bless the efforts of schools, colleges, and seminaries to train those who pro-claim your presence among us in Word and sacrament.

C: Holy Spirit, instill in us a desire to teach others the wisdom of your ways.

M: God of light, give to the Church renewed wisdom and fresh under-standing that the message of your salvation may shine ever brighter in this dark age.

C: Holy Spirit, kindle in us the fire of your love so that others may see our good deeds and praise our Father in heaven.

Special prayers and intercessions may follow.

M: Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions.

Silent prayer.

M: Holy Spirit, renew the face of the earth so that at the name of Jesus every knee may bow.

C: May your peace, which transcends all understanding, guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Amen.

Aha! Jesus Is… The Lamb of God

This Week’s Focus Have you ever had one of those moments where you just got it, when the puzzle in front of you just made sense? There are some biblical truths that are beyond our understanding and there are some that we just do not see clearly. At times, God opens our eyes to see and understand some-thing we never grasped before. The season of Epiphany is a time of ap-pearing and revealing Jesus as the Christ, the promised Savior. In this four-week series, we are going to look at some life-changing "aha" moments for New Testament believers, truths revealed to them that are still true for us and to the end of time.

FIRST LESSON Isaiah 49:1-7 Isaiah reveals that God's chosen servant is the Savior of all.

1 Listen to me, you islands; hear this, you distant nations: Before I was born the LORD called me; from my mother’s womb he has spoken my name. 2 He made my mouth like a sharpened sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me into a polished arrow and concealed me in his quiver. 3 He said to me, “You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will dis-play my splendor.”

4 But I said, “I have labored in vain; I have spent my strength for nothing at all. Yet what is due me is in the LORD’s hand, and my reward is with my God.”

5 And now the LORD says— he who formed me in the womb to be his servant to bring Jacob back to him and gather Israel to himself, for I am honored in the eyes of the LORD and my God has been my strength—6 he says: “It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.” 7 This is what the LORD says— the Redeemer and Holy One of Is-rael— to him who was despised and abhorred by the nation, to the serv-ant of rulers: “Kings will see you and stand up, princes will see and bow down, because of the LORD, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.” SECOND LESSON Acts 13:38-49

Paul proclaims the message of Jesus "to the ends of the earth.”

38 “Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the for-giveness of sins is proclaimed to you. 39 Through him everyone who be-lieves is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses. 40 Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you: 41 “ ‘Look, you scoffers, wonder and perish, for I am going to do something in your days that you would never believe, even if someone told you.’ ”

42 As Paul and Barnabas were leaving the synagogue, the people invited them to speak further about these things on the next Sabbath. 43 When the congregation was dismissed, many of the Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who talked with them and urged them to continue in the grace of God. 44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. 45 When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy. They began to contradict what Paul was saying and heaped abuse on him. 46 Then Paul and Barnabas an-

swered them boldly: “We had to speak the word of God to you first. Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles. 47 For this is what the Lord has commanded us: ‘I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’ ”

48 When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for eternal life believed. 49 The word of the Lord spread through the whole region. GOSPEL READING John 1:29-41

John reveals that Jesus is the lamb of God.

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me be-cause he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32 Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heav-en as a dove and remain on him. 33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”

35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” 37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.

38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?”

They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”

39“Come,” he replied, “and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the af-ternoon. 40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).
