CITIZEN OF THE YEAR AWARD WINNERS

MEET YOUR NEW COUNCILLORS

ALCOA CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL

OF KWINANA 2018MARCH

INSIDE

Welcome to the Autumn edition of the Spirit of Kwinana. In the blink of an eye, we’re already into 2018 and the Christmas and New Years break is quickly becoming a distant memory as things return to business as usual.

The City of Kwinana had a huge year in 2017 with plenty of new facilities opening and some of our biggest events to date taking place. The City is still receiving glowing feedback from those who attended the Act-Belong-Commit Rock Symphony in December 2017, which featured the Perth Symphony Orchestra rocking Kwinana with hits from Nirvana, Metallica, Michael Jackson and more. Bringing an orchestra of this size to Kwinana was a bold decision for Council to make and I am pleased to say the community well and truly embraced the change, with more than 5,000 people enjoying the evening under the stars.

In 2017 Kwinana also became home to Australia’s Best Park, with the Kwinana Adventure Park winning the award for the Australia-wide Park of the Year, at the 2017 National Parks and Leisure Awards. This significant award is received by one of Australia’s most impressive family destinations each year.

This year got off to a great start, with the City’s Australia Day Event and Community Awards once again taking place under the trees at the Kwinana Adventure Park. This event celebrated and recognised individuals and organisations who made notable contributions in their communities and welcomed new citizens into the community.

With so many great events occurring in 2017, the community can look forward to even more unique events and activities in 2018, starting with a huge Children’s Festival planned for the 17 March. The City will also see the continued roll out of environmental initiatives such as the City’s Street Tree Program, helping Kwinana to remain a ‘City of trees’ while navigating development pressure.

If you’d like to stay in the loop with the latest news and event notices from the City of Kwinana, be sure to subscribe to our online newsletter. Simply head over to the City’s website and follow the prompts for updates delivered straight to your inbox.

Carol Adams Mayor

The City of Kwinana would like to extend a huge welcome to two new Councillors voted in at the October 2017 Local Elections. Get to know a little bit more about Councillor Merv Kearney and Councillor Matthew Rowse below.

MERV KEARNEY

Retiring from council in 2012, Councillor Merv Kearney has spent time on the Kwinana Cricket Club Committee and has been involved in a range of groups and events in Kwinana including Kwinana Seniors Citizens and the annual Kwinana Lolly Run.

Councillor Kearney said he is happy to be back in council.

“This is my favourite thing, spending time in the community and getting to know people. I am excited for the next four years.”

MATTHEW ROWSEFounder and current Chairman of the Village at Wellard Residents Association which he helped establish in 2013, Councillor Matthew Rowse has organised and attended many events in the community.

A committee member and coach for the past six years at the Kwinana Junior Knights Football Club, Councillor Rowse aided the club in getting lights installed at Orelia Oval and is extremely proud of his handiwork painting the perfectly straight and beautifully arced lines of the football field.

“My 1987 John Forrest High School Year Book’s ambition read ‘World Domination’ but for now I am happy to be a City of Kwinana Councillor.”

KWINANA AWARDED FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO CHILDREN

Working alongside artists, the City of Kwinana will be exhibiting art projects completed by local schools on the 17 March 2018 during the Alcoa Children’s Festival at Calista Oval.

The topic of food, and in particular the school lunchbox, has become an important point of discussion for some time now as people become more aware of the impact of health and well-being on our children. Providing a unique snapshot of the diversity in our community, the school lunch box and in turn lunch time, gives children the opportunity to create friendships and develop their sense of identity, place and belonging.

To celebrate the impact of the lunch box the City of Kwinana will be bringing artist Yasmin Eghtesadi to work with a local school and create large-scale portraits of children with their lunchboxes in the hopes of encouraging conversations about the food we eat, celebrating diversity in our community and inspiring children to learn about the origins of the food we eat.

“We bring different cuisines to work every day and we reveal the diversity of our cultures. It is the same in schoolyards and I would like to explore the idea of how children perceive food and their lunchboxes,” Yasmin said.

Students from four local primary schools will be collaborating with Perth based artist Shana James to create their own artist books and digital artworks.

This creative project has been designed with the aim of providing students enjoyable and enduring experiences with the view that knowledge acquired through a process of investigation, discovery, connection, creation and reflection supports personal well being and a sense of belonging. The students will take part in a series of

workshops where they will have the opportunity to engage with the City’s specialist staff to learn about Kwinana’s farming and market garden histories and create artworks in collaboration with winning West Australian artist, Shana James.

For more information on either of these projects contact Arif Satar, Community Development Officer Arts & Culture on 9439 0203 or [email protected].

The City of Kwinana Citizen of the Year Awards were presented at Kwinana’s Australia Day event on Friday, 26 January. Each Year on Australia Day, Local Governments across Western Australia present the Community Citizen of the Year Awards to recognize individuals and organizations making a notable contribution in their communities.

Mayor Carol Adams extended her congratulations to the Kwinana Citizen of the Year for 2018, 83-year-old Abram Ziegelaar.

Current president of the local St Vincent de Paul, Abram Ziegelaar has been a resident of Kwinana for 50 years and throughout his time has contributed enormously to shaping the Kwinana community as we know it today.

MAKE FRIENDS WITH VEGGIES!

DOWNSIZE TO A LOW MAINTENANCE LIFE AT BANSKIA PARK RETIREMENT ESTATE

The world of nutrition often brings lots of opinions but one thing all experts agree on is that everyone should be eating more vegetables.

Veggies are nutrient rich, low in fat, high in fibre and low in energy (kilojoules or calories). That means they’re good for you and help you feel full while not adding too many kilojoules. Eating more veggies is one of the easiest ways to improve your health.

Choosing veggies in season also means they are plentiful and cheaper. Aim to ‘Eat Brighter’ with colourful veggies and don’t forget about the convenience of frozen, canned and dried varieties too!

Here is how to befriend veggies this Autumn:

• ‘Veggie-fy’ your brekkie – avocado on your toast, baked beans on the side, mushrooms in an omelette.

• Add salad to freshen up your lunchbox wrap or with a can of tuna. Buying lunch? Ask for extra salad.

• Have a veggie snack attack instead of chocolates and biscuits. Take 10 minutes of your weekend to chop carrot, celery, cucumber or capsicum into sticks. Raw broccoli florets, snow peas and cherry tomatoes also make great snacks. Store them in an airtight container with a wet paper towel for maximum freshness. Watch the kids eat them if they are available in ready to grab sizes.

• Summer might be over, but don’t let that stop you from filling half your dinner plate with salad.

• Canned beans and lentils are a quick and cheap way to add veggies into your favourite curry or pasta sauce. Substitute half or all of the meat for these nutrition packed veggies and watch the savings on your shopping.

• Cooler weather means it is soup time! Pumpkin, mixed veggies or cauliflower are quick to cook and perfect for adding spices (e.g. cumin, curry) as a twist on your regular recipe.

• Same veggies on your shopping list each week? Stir fry up some kale, add roast parsnips and beetroot among your familiar roast dinner or mash up sweet potato instead of regular potatoes.

• Try the same veg cooked in different ways – raw, steamed, stir-fry, baked, BBQ’d – this can give you a new taste to the same veg (just ask my family how good roast brussel sprouts are!)

There are so many benefits to making friends with veggies. So what are you waiting for? Put more in your trolley, add to your recipes and order more with your meals. Did you know all the LiveLighter recipes are based on fruit and vegetables? Visit www.livelighter.com.au and see what veggie packed dish becomes your new favourite.

Are you looking to downsize to a more low maintenance life, with all that you need at your doorstep? That was exactly what Jenny Binks and her late husband were after when they said goodbye to their large property in Serpentine and moved into their own home at Banksia Park Retirement Estate eighteen years ago.

“My husband and I first moved into the village when I was just 60 years old. Our property in Serpentine had sold faster than we expected so we needed to find somewhere to go pretty quickly. We had the intention of only staying in the village for a year before we moved on,” Jenny said.

“We didn’t expect to love the estate as much as we did. It was a great move for us.”

When asked Jenny said it was the like minded people, the ability to get and give support to fellow residents and the close proximity to all the facilities needed for everyday life that has made her love life in the estate.

“I bought a brand new car a few years ago and have barely even used it. Almost everything I need is within walking distance,” Jenny said.

If you’re interested in living in a close-knit community at an affordable price, Banksia Park Retirement Estate may be just what you’re looking for.

With two and three bedroom independent living villas available from just $235,000, contact Sue Reeve on 9419 5485 or 0417 423 511 to arrange a tour of the estate.

MOMENTUM BUILDS ON PLANNING FOR NEW PORT

The past few months have seen some exciting progress in relation to the plans for a new Outer Harbour in the Kwinana Industrial Area.

Following the state election in March 2017, the new government has been putting in place their pre-election commitments, one of them being planning for the Outer Harbour that the City had actively lobbied for.

As such, in September 2017 the Minister for Planning, Rita Saffioti, initiated the formation of the Westport Taskforce. Since this time the City has participated in a number of forums held to brief stakeholders and to start the community dialogue.

The new port in Kwinana will be one of the world’s most advanced industrial ports, housed within the State’s premier industrial area. It will assist in achieving a significant reduction of traffic from community neighbourhoods by diverting freight trucks onto purposely built and designed freight routes.

The Outer Harbour also has the potential to catalyse tens of thousands of new jobs (direct and indirect) and contribute annual revenue of over $43 billion to the state and national economies when the Western Trade Coast is fully built out.

For further information on the Outer Harbour and the Westport project, visit the Department of Transport website www.transport.wa.gov.au/westport.
