Street. The cathedral is said to be the oldest Catholic cathedral in continuous use in the United States and one of the oldest existing buildings in the downtown area.

The Cathedral is dedicated under the patronage of Our Lady of Peace because the first Catholic missionaries to the Hawaiian Islands, members of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary gave that title to their first foundation in a new land. The Cathedral stands on land which was given to the missionaries by King Kamehameha III (Kauikeaouli) when the mission was established in 1827. It is on the National Register of Historical Places. Father Damien DeVeuster, now Saint Damien, was ordained a priest in the cathedral on May 21, 1864. Mother Marianne Cope, now Saint Marianne, worshipped nt he Cathedral upon her arrival in Hawaii in November 1883. Today, the Cathedral Basilica enshrines the remains of Saint Marianne and a relic of Saint Damien.

There are six masses that serve 2000 people each Sunday. More than 200 people visit the Cathedral each day for daily reflection. Currently, restoration is happening. Restoration is occurring in six phases. The hope is not to have to close the church except for at the very end of the project. More than $7,000,000 has been raised. An additional $10,000,000 needs to be raised to complete the project which includes such things as ceiling work, artwork repair, sound improvements, second level galleries, windows, and stained glass.

During the question and answer section, we talked about the Portuguese monument and the park next to the Cathedral, history associated with the

Cathedral, and the fact that the bells ring each day at noon, the front door is always open, and all people are invited to visit. Tours can be arranged. July 9 is Our Lady of Peace Feast Day and August 16th if the 175th Anniversary of Cathedral’s Dedication. For tours, call Clara Barnes at 808.585.3357.

PP Don Calloway picked the winning ticket, but this time he was not a winner! The Four Way Test was recited and the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted, PP/PE Carol Riley
