3 4 5 8 9 West Virginia State Parks Cacapon Resort State Park near Berkeley Springs, WV,  is 6,115 acres of quiet respite.  The Old Inn at Cacapon is special.   Con-structed by the CCC, Camp Morgan, circa 1934, has 12 rooms, accommodates up to 32 people and includes a “great room,” kitch-en and expansive lawn area.  This vintage charmer is popular for family reunions and was the first lodge in West Virginia’s state park system.  Today, ten of West Virginia’s 49 state parks feature full-scale lodges. Cacapon’s 48-room lodge is open year-round with an on-site restaurant. The park also features a Robert Trent Jones, Sr. golf course, riding stables, hiking trails, biking, lake fishing and swim-ming, nature center and activities, confer-ence facilities and sweeping views of four states from an observation platform perched on Cacapon Mountain.  Cacapon has ample parking and no entrance fee, and its “rural-yet-close-to-urban” location  is a natural for year-round visits and getaways.  Groups, large or small,  visiting Cacapon take advantage of recreation that creates fel-lowship and growth.  A sporting clays shoot-ing range can be a team activity based on in-dividual pursuit. Much like golf, where each player can contribute to an overall team goal, clay targets with on-site training and appro-priate safety gear is a new adventure.   Often groups look for a guided walk or hike or an early morning bird walk.  The park naturalist is instrumental in providing assis-tance and introducing groups to nature study

and investigating more remote areas that are often avoided.  Many groups, youth and adults, welcome an opportunity to learn about the outdoors when visiting a state park: birds, insects, fish and mammals such as bear, deer and even squirrels.  Sometimes all that is needed is an introduction to the outdoors as part of a meeting or conference agenda.   Group or team activities are popular at these state parks: Canaan Valley (snow tub-ing and skiing), Blackwater Falls (sledding, birding), Pipestem Resort (FootGolf), The Greenbrier River Trail (hiking, biking) and other state parks, including Cacapon Resort State Park.  Visit a state park and enjoy time with family, friends, or as a planned retreat.

ESTABLISH GOALS Determine why your organization should hold a con-ference. What is it that you wish to accomplish? What is the end goal? Perhaps is it to secure new clients, get publicity, or generate new revenue. Establish the goal and keep it in mind as you plan the conference.

SET A BUDGET Create a budget to set a financial limit. The budget should include revenues as well as expenses. Make a bud-get spreadsheet listing the major cost items of your wish list, including location rental, staff, speakers, meals, sig-nage, equipment, printed materials and giveaways.

SELECT A VENUE Set the dates for the conference and begin your search for an appropriate location and venue. The venue should offer the services necessary and meet your conference goals, needs and number of attendees. The amenities should be comfortable for your attendees and speakers, with options for socialization and recreational opportu-nities.

SECURE SPEAKERS Obtain speakers with expertise in your subject, in terms of your established goals. If your budget allows, try to bring a well-known and experienced speaker, as this will help ensure a successful conference. Coordinate with all your speakers well in advance, so that they fully understand the conference goals and the dynamics of the audience, allowing them time to tailor their speeches and materials accordingly.

ENCOURAGE A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE Provide activities to keep morale high for your attend-ees. After-conference drinks, musical entertainment or team building activities are popular. Ultimately, you want people to come away from the conference having ben-efitted from the experience and reflecting well on your business. Whether it’s pens, promotional bags, or some-thing more original or extravagant, attendees should leave your conference with something they can link in their minds with a positive and empowering experience.

Staging a Successful Conference Holding a successful conference is a major business deci-sion for most companies. A conference will take up a significant amount of time, resources, and money. As in any major func-tion, the key to running a successful conference is planning, planning and more planning.

Visitors to Central Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley may be surprised to see all the signs for wineries, craft beer brewers and whiskey distilleries. Virginia is known as the home of America’s wine making, as it was Thomas Jefferson who spent years try-ing to grow European grape varieties. While not successful during his time, Virginia now can boast of nearly 250 wineries. Recently Travel & Leisure magazine named Virginia as one of the top five up-and-coming wine regions in the world, and the only one in the United States in that category. Virginia is divided into designat-ed “wine trails.” In order to explore these trails, I would suggest picking up a free copy of The Virginia Winery Guide 2015 or a copy of Dine, Wine & Stein. The Monticello Wine Trail has several win-eries all within a short driving distance. Two of my favorites, located within a few min-utes of each other, are Horton Vineyards in Gordonsville and Barboursville Vineyards in Barboursville. Horton Vineyards is con-sidered by many to be the most innovative

winery in Virginia. Dennis Horton intro-duced the Viognier grape to the state, and it is now one of our most recognized wines. Barboursville Vineyards and the elegant northern Italian award-winning restaurant, Palladio, is just down the road. Winemak-er Luca Paschina was recently named one of the twenty most admired winemakers in the North America. Pollak Vineyard is located fifteen miles west of Charlottesville in Greenwood. In warm months you can enjoy a picnic on the veranda, patio or on a blanket by the pond. On colder evenings, warm up by the fire in the comfortable tast-ing room. Nelson County has an abundance of wineries and breweries. Within a matter of a few miles you can visit several wineries including Afton Mountain Winery with its unique wine storage cave, Cardinal Point, Veritas, and Flying Fox. After another few miles there are five more wineries includ-ing DelFosse, and Hill Top Berry Farm and Winery which specializes in fruit wines and twelve different varieties of Mead. Try the mead Pyment, a drink made with grapes

and honey which was known as the drink of the Romans. Wintergreen Winery, close by, includes a great picnic area. Traveling further south in Nelson Coun-ty you can pay a visit to the newly-opened Silver Back Distillery, producers of distinct and flavorful spirits, and well as the Virgin-ia Distillery which is producing whiskey. Nelson County is unique in many ways, in-cluding the fact that it also has three brew-eries - which explains why Nelson County is referred to as the “Red, White and Brew County.” Devils Backbone Brewing Co. is located at the foot of Wintergreen Moun-tain, and Blue Mountain Brewery Restau-rant and Pub is located in Afton. Wild Wolf Brewing Co. is a locally owned and operated brewpub in Nellysford. Bring the kids (and dog!) and enjoy stunning views of the sur-rounding Blue Ridge Mountains from the biergarten, pavilion, or wrap-around porch-es. Wild Wolf offers a diverse and delicious menu that includes house smoked meats as well as vegan and gluten-free options. There are eleven rotating beers on tap.

Part of the uniqueness of Nelson County is that we have all been there before, even if only through our televisions. Nelson County was the home of Earl Hamner, cre-ator of the popular television show, “The Waltons.” In the Shenandoah Valley, Barren Ridge Vineyard in Fishersville is home to Augusta County’s premier winery. John and Shelby Higgs converted their family’s former apple orchard into a state-of-the-art winery. Near-by is the newly opened Seven Arrows Brew-ery located on Route 250 in Fishersville. In nearby Staunton, Queen City Brewing offers pints, samples, and 64-oz. “Growlers” to en-joy there or take home. Bluestone Vineyard is in Bridgewater and produces excellent wines. Sit and sip against the background of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Rockbridge Vineyard is one of the oldest wineries and producers of fine award-winning wines including their desert wine V D’OR. Blue Ridge Vineyard is locat-ed in Eagle Rock, a short drive from Roa-noke, Lexington, or Charlottesville. Marvel at the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountain, and enjoy the fruit of the vineyard. The nat-ural splendor of the mountain offers a per-fect place to create memories for your wed-

ding. The vineyard is open Thursday through Monday. Italy has its espresso bars, Paris has its sidewalk cafes, England and Ireland their pubs. In Virginia we also have many of these, but right here in our own backyard, or perhaps just down the road or over the next mountain, there is a winery or brewery that offers camaraderie, a special welcome and a unique atmo-sphere all its own. Many of these places have beautiful rooms for private events that offer a unique ambiance that may only be found in the beautiful Vir-ginia countryside. Take ad-vantage of these outstanding local venues by booking a corporate meeting or a wed-ding. You will find that tast-ing and barrel rooms offer a charming alternative to bland ballrooms, while combined with a breathtaking backdrop of grapevines and mountains.

Making intelligent choices about eating and exercise is easier than ever with all of the nutritional information available online and in print. It’s amazing to me that even with all of the knowledge available that obesity in America is becoming an epidemic. Along with obesity comes lack of energy, injuries, disease and shortened life span. The increas-ing costs of health care that employers are having to shoulder as well as the increase in fees that employees have to pay, makes it ob-vious that it is in everyone’s best interest to be as healthy as possible.

Most people face challenges getting or staying in shape. “Business travelers” make up a large cross-section of the population and face particularly unique nutritional and physical fitness challenges. However, with a little planning and commitment anyone can reach or maintain their health and fit-ness goals. Aside from the health benefits of staying fit, keeping physically active during travel can help prevent deep vein thrombo-sis, a potentially life-threatening medical condition.

Personally, I like to exercise and eat healthy because I have more energy, am more focused, get more done at work, and I

can keep up with my three children. I’m not talking about a diet - I don’t even use that word! I am talking about getting or staying fit for you and for your family. The fit busi-ness traveler is someone who takes care of their body in order to be more successful in their work and personal life. I hope these five steps will help get you motivated.

Journal Write down your goal(s) in positive self-statements along with a list of reasons for the change. State your goal in clear pos-itive terms, such as “I want to be toned and physically fit,” instead of “I’ve got to get rid of this spare tire around my waist.” or “I want to be a good example for my kids and be able to keep up with them as they get old-er” instead of “ If I don’t do something I’m going to have a heart attack and die.” Writ-ing your goals in positive self-statements and the ways of achieving them will force you to think out in specific terms what these goals represent in your life and the meaning you believe your life will hold for you when these goals are met.

Imagine Look at a calendar and realize that time is going to pass from one year to the next no matter what choices you make; however, the choices you make within that time will determine where you are in your life and whether or not you succeed at meeting your goals. Create mental images of yourself as having already succeeded. Use any tangible images that will motivate you as well; photos of you at your ideal, or people who inspire you. Write down a list of self-rewards. Make sure they are not counterproductive but in-stead sustain your motivation. Rewarding yourself along the way will help continue your progress, whether it’s buying a new pair of running shoes or getting a massage.

Identify Write down of all of the physical activi-ties you enjoy, or used to enjoy. Just because Bob has been running 25 miles a week for years and is happy and fit doesn’t mean you have to run to be fit. If you hate running you won’t be happy! It sounds obvious, but so many people give up exercise because they don’t find out what it is they like to do.

They get bored and quit, or they force themselves to eat food that they don’t like until they can’t stand it anymore. Make a list of nutritious foods you like that you can incorporate in your plan. Identify your problem areas and have a healthy alternate solution. For example, if you are easily se-duced by fast food while traveling, make it a priority to stock up on healthy snacks, resisting fatty take-out is easier in case of an unexpected delay at the airport or inter-state traffic. Or, if you know you will have client meetings all day, plan to get up early to work out before starting your busy day.

Prepare If it’s not convenient, you probably won’t do it. So preparing in advance will help you stay on track and prevent you from mak-ing excuses. Keep your workout gear and healthy snacks packed. Find out ahead of time what kind of workout facility is avail-able at your host site. There might be a park or YMCA close by. You might even have access to the menu so you can plan ahead what you will order or take as an alternative.

If you like workout videos have them loaded on your laptop or portable media device so you can do them in your hotel room.

Enjoy If you don’t enjoy it, no matter how con-venient it is, you won’t do it. If you are doing the exercise you like and eating the healthy foods you like you can relax and enjoy your healthy, fit lifestyle! You will soon see and feel results!!

The Shenandoah Valley region has more to offer than just beautiful meeting spaces. An important aspect of corporate retreats and group gatherings is to provide time and space for your team to get to know one an-other on a different level. What better way to do so than with team-building activities that help foster camaraderie and improve the group’s dynamics?

Hillbrook Inn & Spa, located just an hour from Washington D.C. in Charles Town, West Virginia, offers an ideal setting for smaller meetings and is only a few miles down the road from the renowned Sum-mit Point Raceway. The Training Center’s Off-Road Driving Course is a great way for individual team members to experience the thrill of high-speed driving on unimproved road surfaces, while also working as a team to help guide one another through challeng-ing off-road obstacles. After a day at Sum-mit Point Raceway, the group can come

together for a hearty five course meal at Hill-brook Inn’s Redbook Restaurant, where they can share their experiences on the course.

In addition to more than 20 years of cu-linary expertise, Hillbrook Inn has 18 guest suites situated on three scenic properties that offer a variety of well-appointed ac-commodations, plus a billiard room and life-size outdoor chess set that can be en-joyed during down time from your planned events. The conference room at Hillbrook’s historic Hawthorn Estate provides a private

and modern space that’s ideal for intimate groups of 12 or less.

For larger gatherings, the Natural Bridge Park Historic Hotel & Conference Center is the perfect choice. The hotel boasts 156 guest rooms, a full service dining room, a tavern, and six different meeting venues ranging from 300 to 10,000 square feet. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the facility is located less than three miles off interstate I-81 in Natural Bridge, Virginia, and offers a variety of team-building ex-ercises, from horseback riding and hiking

to canoeing and kayaking. Another great team-building activity is volunteering as a group to help renovate educational exhibits and restore the land that will become a new Virginia state park.

The state parks in the Mountain State of

West Virginia offer myriad opportunities for team development as well. For instance, groups large or small visiting Cacapon State Park in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, can take advantage of recreation that creates fel-lowship and growth. The park offers over 20 miles of hiking trails, plus golfing, horse-

back riding, fishing and game courts. There is also a trap shooting range, which can be tailored as a team activity, where each play-er’s individual pursuit contributes to an overall team goal.

Many groups, both youth and adults, wel-come an opportunity to learn about the out-doors when visiting a state park. The park naturalist can guide an early morning bird walk, or simply provide an introduction to the outdoors as part of a meeting or confer-ence agenda.

In addition, Blackwater Falls State Park in Davis, West Virginia -- one of the most pho-tographed sites in the state -- has conference facilities, an indoor pool and fitness center, a restaurant, and lodging for your special event. The seasonal sled run is a fun activity that your group can enjoy together during the winter months.

Groups can also stay at Pipestem Resort State Park in Pipestem, West Virginia, and take advantage of whitewater rafting and zip-lining at Ace Adventure Center or oth-er whitewater rafting adventures in the New River Region. Skiing at Canaan Valley Re-sort State Park or biking on the nationally recognized Greenbrier River Trail are some other options to consider for more adven-turous groups.

Whether your team-building goal is a sim-ple bonding exercise or a multi-day retreat, the region has much to offer in the way of meeting spaces and activities that can have a positive impact on the cohesion and effec-tiveness of your team.
