Flowing through TIMEICE AGEBeginning with the Ice Age, the forces that formed the river can be traced to ancient glaciers pushing their way down over most of Illinois. Remnants of the period can still be seen etched into the 300-foot ivory bluffs hugging the river and towering above the road along the Meeting of the Great Rivers Scenic Byway.

The best place to experience the layers of bluff formation is at Great Rivers Park in Godfrey, located five miles from Downtown Alton on Illinois Route 100.

EARLY EXPLORATIONThe first modern-day explorers on the Mississippi, Father Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet, led the first French expedition down the Mississippi River in 1673, seeking a route to the Pacific Ocean. Though they never reached the ocean, the journey was considered a success for the established relationships with

Native American tribes. A cross, visible just north of Grafton near Brussels Ferry, commemorates the explorers as the first to land at the confluence of the Mississippi and Illinois rivers. Location: Marquette Cross, Illinois Route 100, Grafton

From the beginning of time, people have been drawn to the rivers as a starting point for settlement, exploration, discovery, growth and prosperity. Ancient civilizations established roots on the river’s banks, explorers departed on epic journeys at the river’s mouth and memorable speeches were made with the river mighty waters flowing in the background. Here the intermingling of the Illinois, Missouri and Mississippi rivers over time has led to a confluence of ideas and historic moments shaping the fate of our region and turning points in time for our nation. Discover the stories waiting to be told where the rivers meet the road.

PIASA BIRDWhile traveling the Mississippi River, Father Marquette wrote in his journal a detailed description of the painting of the Piasa Bird on the bluffs. The legend of the Piasa Bird – “bird that devours men” – and its connection to the Native Americans continues to be a local and visitor favorite. Stop to see a replica of the

painting at Piasa Park and learn the story of this treasured legend that you will never forget.

JOURNEY WEST: LEWIS & CLARK EXPEDITIONIn the depths of winter on Dec. 12, 1803, Captains Meriwhether Lewis and William Clark gathered 45 men for a military expedition and established the Camp River Dubois in present-day Hartford, Illinois. They would spend the winter performing drills and preparing for the journey of westward expansion, setting forth from the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers on May 14, 1804. Visitors can experience the Illinois side of the story at the Lewis & Clark State Historic site in Hartford, site number one on the National Lewis & Clark Trail. Then, complete the journey with Lewis & Clark with views of the confluence from 150-feet in the air at the Lewis & Clark Confluence Tower.

Towering 150 feet above the confluence of two of America’s greatest rivers, the Lewis and Clark Confluence Tower showcases the meeting of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Tours are available for three levels of the tower where visitors can see the natural majesty of the region and vistas of Downtown St. Louis, Alton and other local communities.

50-foot level: See the great 12-foot man-made levy which holds back the waters of the two great rivers

100-foot level: View the actual confluence of the two rivers150-foot level: The skyline of Downtown St. Louis comes into view

Come and watch eagles soar, view the brilliant sunsets or just fly a kite at the tower!

It was one of the greatest adventures in American history: the exploration of the uncharted and unknown upper Midwest and western United States in search of a water route to the Pacific Ocean. And, it began right here where the Missouri River meets the Mississippi.

This was just the beginning of the adventure which took over two years to complete and catapulted the expedition into the history books. Learn more about the journey, the preparations and read actual excerpts from William Clark’s diary by visiting the Lewis & Clark State Historic Site in Hartford. This is where the true journey into the unknown began!

STEAMBOATS AND RIVER INDUSTRY In the early 1800s, Alton was known as a bustling river port with thousands of steamboats docking here and transporting goods as far as New Orleans. Today, the river remains a super highway for transporting goods. Visitors can see the river in action as commercial barges carrying asphalt, corn, soybeans and other commodities pass through the Melvin Price Locks & Dam 26, one of the largest locks on the Mississippi River. Guided tours to the top of the dam (8 stories high) are offered daily so visitors can see towboats and barges as they push their way through this incredible structure.

While you are there, check out the interactive displays at the National Great Rivers Museum and discover how the river has shaped the ecology, people, culture and economy throughout time.
