36th International Workshop on HIV & Aging October 2015, Baltimore,USA
INTRODUCTION
The annual international Workshop on HIV & Aging was initiated in 2009 as a unique and much needed platform for international scientific exchange on the increasingly recognized problems of HIV and aging. As in previous years, the 2015 - edition will gather a crossdisciplinary team of experts and trainees involved in HIV and aging research, in order to present and discuss the latest developments and strategies for the future, in an interactive and science - focused setting.
The meeting will have a two day program consisting of invited lectures, abstract-driven scientific presentations and poster sessions. The latest developments will be reviewed and evaluated in order to identify important topics for future research, develop better approaches to treatment, and create a strategic agenda for future management problems associated with HIV and aging. This workshop is intended as a small, focused meeting to encourage scientific dialogue among all attendees, including presenters.
This meeting prospectus is designed in order to provide information on the meeting set-up, demographics and metrics and also on the evaluation scores from the participants of the previous editions. We hope this information is of interest. Please contact us if specific information is missing and we will gladly provide you with additional documentation.
We would surely welcome your suggestions for improvement of this workshop in order to best serve the international community treating aging HIV - infected patients.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
BACKGROUNDThe annual international Workshop on HIV & Aging was initiated in 2009 as a unique and much needed platform for international scientific exchange on the increasingly recognized problems of HIV and aging. Last year’s edition gathered a cross-disciplinary team of experts and trainees involved in HIV and aging research, in order to present and discuss the latest developments and strategies for the future, in an interactive and science - focused setting.
The 2013 - edition of International Workshop on HIV & Aging was CME - accredited by the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. As always, the workshop was abstract-driven. To ensure the quality of the presentations, all abstracts were reviewed by the Organising and Scientific Committees.
MEETING OBJECTIVES• To gather crossdisciplinary professionals in an interactive workshop setting
• To provide a platform for presentation and discussion of the latest developments in the field of HIV and aging
• To share cutting-edge information
• To translate knowledge to daily clinical practice
• To stimulate discussion among different disciplines
• To build collaborations
Improved management of older individuals with HIV will require a much deeper understanding of the interface between aging, HIV, associated co-morbid conditions, and concurrent treatment. In addition, research is needed to address the unique psychosocial challenges faced by this growing population.
LEARNING OBJECTIVESAfter participating in this activity, the participants will:
• Identify age-related clinical complications found in the aging HIV-infected patient
• Integrate the latest scientific research into daily clinical care to improve the quality of life of these patients
• Identify the future challenges faced by this expanding population of elderly HIV infected patients
FORMATThe two-day meeting program consists of invited lectures, abstract-driven scientific presentations and poster sessions.
The meeting is abstract-driven. To ensure the quality of accepted abstracts, all submitted abstracts go through a blind, peer-reviewed process conducted by the members of the Organizing and Scientific Committees. The below table shows the abstract submission statistics from the past three years:
2011 2012 2013
Total number accepted abstracts 33 29 30
Oral presentations 17 17 18
Poster presentations 16 12 12

UNIQUE MEETING FEATURESThe International Workshop on HIV & Aging remains the only platform in the world for international exchange and dialogue for cross-disciplinary team of experts involved in HIV and aging research. The meeting gathers a steady international community of researchers and healthcare professionals. The compact size of the meeting stimulates interaction, which is considered one of the most effective elements of this program.
TARGET AUDIENCEInternal Medicine specialists working in cardiovascular, renal, endocrine, and metabolic complications of HIV areas, Infectious Disease specialists (virologists, immunologists pharmacologists), geriatricians, neurologists, epidemiologists, geneticists and other clinical researchers.

MOST EFFECTIVE ELEMENTS
QUOTES• An outstanding program again this year!
• The concept of AIDS and aging itself is a new concept. Many people have plenty of doubts about AIDS and aging
• Outstanding speakers
• The oral presentations + invited lectures were quite helpful in broadening my knowledge base on HIV & Aging. The sessions were well moderated
• Interactions among the attendees
• Excellent organization of syllabus - nice balance of basic/clinical
• Private discussions with investigators in the field
• Small size of the meeting makes meeting people quite easy - I’d keep the small size
• Networking with leaders
• Good place for discussion
• Talks by non-HIV experts
• The relatively small size with opportunities for interaction. Question periods very well organized
• Bringing together experts from different disciplines
• Good mix between lectures and topics + research presentations
136th International Workshop on HIV & Aging October 2015, Baltimore,USA
With an aging HIV-infected population - and suggestions that HIV itself may cause conditions normally associated with aging - there is a pressing need for more scientific dialog on this topic. Improved management of older individuals with HIV will require a much deeper understanding of the interface between aging, HIV, associated co-morbid conditions, and concurrent treatment. In addition, research is needed to address the unique psychosocial challenges faced by this growing population. The International Workshop on HIV & Aging remains a unique and much needed platform for international scientific exchange on this important topic. The crossdisciplinary character of the meeting together with its compact size, which stimulates interaction among the participants and discussion, are considered the most effective elements of this program.
The Organizing Committee is pleased with the evaluation results of the 4th International Workshop on HIV & Aging. We therefore look forward to organizing the 5th edition of the workshop and to welcoming old and new participants on 20 - 21 October 2014 and to the continuation of this meeting in 2015.
