A good trade show is only as good as the exhibitors and the buyers who
participate in it. This, I believe is the driving success of South Africa’s conference and exhibitions industry and most importantly, the ten year success of Meetings Africa.
Over the years, the show has helped to facilitate meetings for exhibitors and global hosted buyers - engagements which, judging from our research, has resulted in meaningful business transactions. Last year alone there were 10 169 meetings requested through the electronic diary system, and all exhibitor and buyer delegates report brisk business from the tradeshow fl oor.
At the time of publication, thirteen destinations from the rest
of the continent had registered
to exhibit at this year’s show. They are: Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya,
Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Seychelles, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. This once again makes Meetings Africa the best represented and most valuable business events tradeshow in Africa.
We, the Meetings Africa hosts and organisers, have received positive feedback about the trade show from both buyers and exhibitors alike. The continental appetite for hosting meetings, conferences and exhibitions in Africa is growing and this has certainly contributed to an increase in interest in Meetings Africa and the show has grown in great strides.
OUR TIME IS NOW
The eyes of the world are defi nitely on our continent and this is an opportunity we need to seize and make the most of, and what better place to start than right here at Meetings Africa.
According to the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) 11 401 meetings were held worldwide in 2013. Of these, 375 were held in Africa. South Africa, Kenya, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and Ghana hosted the most meetings with
South Africa leading the pack
with 118 meetings hosted and Kenya and Morocco with 38 and 30 respectively.
This may not seem like a lot of meetings, but it tells the story of a continent and of destinations on the continent that have worked hard to prove themselves capable and this is now paying off .
It also mirrors well with what we know about the bigger global interest in Africa and how Africa, once the continent many thought very little of, is now the one that is progressing steadily across all sectors.
It is something we ought to be proud of. It speaks well about how far we have come; it’s an endorsement on our capabilities and proves to the broader global industry that we have the intellectual capacity and the skills to host these meetings, big events, conferences, incentives and exhibitions. It proves to the world that Africa is advancing and that we are doing so together.
We have worked hard to ensure that we bring you quality buyers for you to meet and do business with.
I urge you to make the best of these engagements as they are, an important factor in how your destination and your product and service off erings are received. Our hosted buyers play an important role in our show. They come from all over the world where they have been exposed to various other products and are now looking for new and exciting products.
In closing, I would like to thank all of you for your participation at Meetings Africa 2015.
May you have a productive Meetings Africa 2015.

WELCOME TO JOBURG
and to Meetings Africa 2015. The Joburg Convention Bureau and the City of Johannesburg take pride and pleasure in celebrating
the 10th anniversary of Meetings Africa in conjunction with our partners the South Africa National Convention Bureau, Gauteng Convention Bureau and the Sandton Convention Centre.
As our track record demonstrates, international conference organisers and exhibitors repeatedly choose the City of Gold as a destination for their events. Beyond its rich variety of business and meetings off erings, Johannesburg provides a unique atmosphere that makes it a truly cosmopolitan and vibrant destination, where various cultures interact and celebrate side by side.
The city has recently received several accolades from many global players, celebrating its diversity and vigour. Last year MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index rated Johannesburg as the most visited city in Africa. It was also ranked by the Good City Index as the
most inspiring city in the world, just below Hong Kong. Being the home of Meetings Africa contributes to cementing the city’s position as the economic capital and the heartland of trade and economic activity in Africa. We are proud to be the home of most local and multinational companies in banking, fi nance and industry due to our world-class economic and social infrastructure, which is essential to big business. Joburg’s status as a global city trusted to host major international events is constantly being reaffi rmed with an ever-increasing list of international events to our credit.
While this is an affi rmation of Joburg’s status as a world-class African city, let us remember that we could not have achieved this without the support and professionalism of the tourism, leisure and hospitality industries in our city. Our thanks therefore goes to all our partners and stakeholders in the public and private sector – and the working relationships which make all our achievements possible.

THIS YEAR MARKS A MAJOR MILESTONE for Meetings Africa – one that we at Sandton Convention Centre (SCC) are proud to share with South African Tourism and the Convention Bureau. As the proud host venue of Meetings Africa for the last decade, we are honoured to have been part of the growth of this prestigious event, synonymous with the promotion of business tourism, innovation and positive economic impact on the African continent – all of which are at the core of the SCC’s founding philosophy.
Meetings Africa is an important platform for African exhibitors and without doubt the SCC, with its location at the epicentre of Africa’s business hub – Sandton, Johannesburg – is the ideal destination for a show that encourages growth of the African business tourism industry. This locale boasts easy access through the continent’s busiest airport, complemented by the Gautrain, which is a mere fi ve-minute walk from the SCC and links the airport to major entertainment
and business destinations throughout Gauteng’s metropolitan areas.
Guests have access to over 5 000 hotel rooms, ranging from budget to luxury, which are accessible via the skywalk or within easy walking distance, with guests aff orded preferential rates to select hotels in the area through SCC’s parent company Tsogo Sun.
The SCC was designed to hold an array of events concurrently, accommodating up to 10 000 guests at any one time while still being capable of hosting intimate meetings and events, making it the perfect venue for Meetings Africa. We are proud to be contributors to South Africa’s economic development through business tourism.
On behalf of the SCC team, I wish you at Meetings Africa experience that leads to future success.

Take a tour of SowetoYou haven’t really experienced life in South Africa until you’ve visited a township, and Soweto, to the south-west of Johannesburg, is the largest of them all. This area is also famous for its role in the struggle against apartheid, and there are now many sites of historical signifi cance. The easiest way to visit Soweto is on an offi cial township tour, and you can make the trip as long or short as you like.
Take a selfi eTake a photo with South Africa’s iconic president at Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton.
SAY NO TO OPEN BARS There is no need for guests to be drinking expensive alcohol on the company’s bill. Off er a range of soft drinks, local beers and wine and have a cash bar for the rest.
BOOK EARLY Last-minute bookings are quoted a higher-than-normal rate – book your venue and service providers early on in the year as this gives you room to negotiate a better rate (especially if you pay up front).
SKIP THE BELLS AND WHISTLES Don’t spend unnecessary money on designing and printing beautiful invitations. The fact is most people are going to look at it once to get all the necessary details and then throw it away Send email invitations instead, not only will you save money but it will be much easier to manage all the responses.
TRANSFORM COMPANY SURROUNDS Transform your client’s boardroom, terrace or canteen into a space that brings the function’s theme to life.
ALL-INCLUSIVE PACKAGES Many hotels, venues and restaurants have packages that include food, drinks and entertainment. This is a great cost-eff ective solution.

CONFERENCES WHERE LECTURES
ARE GIVEN Promotional and corporate gift company, Macbryan suggests giving USB fl ash drives preloaded with speaker notes. Other suggestions include eco-friendly notebooks with pens and pencils, tote-bags and folders – perfect for branding.
OUTDOOR EVENTS Drinking bottles, caps or hats and sunscreen are mostly commonly given and can be branded.
GIVE A GIFT YOU WANT TO OWN According to Amrod, importer and in-house brander of corporate clothing and gifts, if you think it’s a cheesy, inexpensive bit of promotional fl uff , chances are
delegates or clients will see it the exact same way.
GIVE GIFTS THAT RELATE TO
THE THEME OF YOUR EVENT
Choose something that will be spoken about and used for many months after the event. Also, if you would rather give a gift that supports greening or an upliftment programme, do so. Explain to your delegates why you chose those gifts.
RELIABLE OPTION One of the most-used promotional items are branded pens. Pens can be printed with a logo, address, phone number or slogan. The design can be simple or highly creative. The information can be printed or engraved.

REDUCE YOUR USE OF ENERGY by choosing energy-effi cient technology for your stand, such as LED lighting or energy-effi cient plasma screens. Also consider switching off your power to the stand at night.
IF YOU ARE FROM OUT-OF-TOWN, why not make use of the Gautrain and shuttle services when getting around. This will also go a long way to reducing your carbon footprint.
MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR TIME AT SHOWS, like Meetings Africa, by planning meetings around the show. With so many key players in one location at the same time, exhibitions provide the perfect opportunity to meet, and thereby decrease your carbon footprint.
ENCOURAGE YOUR STAFF TO DRINK FILTERED
TAP WATER, rather than bottled water. Do not serve bottled water on your stand. This will also reduce the waste generated at the event.
ENCOURAGE YOUR STAFF TO USE THE
RECYCLING BINS at shows correctly. They will be clearly labelled but sometimes people throw the wrong waste in the wrong bin – which can contaminate recyclables and render them non-recyclable. For example, if food waste contaminates paper waste.
AVOID HAVING LARGE VOLUMES OF PRINTED
HAND-OUTS on the stand. Rather share information electronically with visitors to your stand.
IF YOU WANT TO GIVE GIFTS to people visiting your stand, try to procure locally-produced items, and in the process support our local economy.
GREEN YOUR STAND BY CHOOSING AN ECO-
FRIENDLY DESIGN. If you are using a shell scheme stand, then opt for eco-friendly accessories or go with fabric graphics that be re-used at future events.
The Meetings Africa team aims to showcase Africa as a premier business events destination that cares about its people and the natural environment. Through hosting the event in a responsible manner it refl ects the importance of local economic development. The Meetings Africa Exhibition Catalogue is printed on 100% recycled paper and uses no dyes or varnishes. The catalogue is saddle stitched to ensure that no glues are required in the binding process.

ELECTRONIC INVITATIONS While sending out printed invitations for your event might have its charm, sending out e-invites or creating a Facebook event is a sustainable option for many businesses.
RECYCLING When choosing decorations, select ones that can be recycled.
FOR THE LOVE OF WATER While it’s great to off er all of your guests bottled water, it is more suitable and environmentally friendly to have jugs of water. Put the jugs in the fridge beforehand and garnish with mint, cucumber or herbs to make it look enticing to delegates.
THINK OUT THE PARTY FAVOUR BOX
Select gifts with minimal packaging and those that can be reused. For instance, small fl ower plants or classic chalk board name tags are bound to be reused.
PURCHASE SEASONAL AND FREE-
RANGE FOODS Not only will you wow your guests with local fl avours but by using fair trade coff ee and tea, local craft beers and wines you add local fl air to your event. Source: Event Aff airs
