The congregations of the Great Lakes conference are sponsoring a Reformation seminar which is intended to remind us of the blessings God has given us through Martin Luther and other reformers. It is also designed to be an outreach opportunity to make others aware of the Reformation and especially to share with them the news that Jesus is their Savior too, who has won for them forgiveness, peace, comfort, strength, and life eternal. The seminar will be held here on Friday, October 13, at 7 p.m. More information about how you can help will be coming soon. Immanuel update A few weeks ago the academic year began at Immanuel Lutheran in Eau Claire, WI. During the opening service President Sippert spoke about "The One-Way Street of Christian Education at Immanuel." High school enrollment began with 110 total students (33 freshmen, 29 sophomores, 24 juniors, and 24 seniors). We rejoice that this enrollment is slightly higher than last year and is an increase of three students from what was anticipated. In the college department there are 20 total students with more of these being enrolled full-time than last year. 11 students are pursuing the teaching ministry and five are preparing for seminary training. In seminary there are three students, two of them beginning the program with one second-year student, Samuel Naumann, who recently completed his vicar assignment at Messiah, Hales Corners, WI. Hymn 421 (red hymnal): Come, Follow Me, the Savior Spake

Closing prayer: P: Thank You, Lord God, for nourishing our souls on this journey of earthly life with the food of everlasting life in Your holy Word. Fortify us to leave here and engage the people in our lives with the love poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit. Use us to bring Your peace into the lives of those who need Your love; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen.

Benediction

P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. C: Amen.

Closing hymn 409 (red hymnal): Let Us Ever W alk with Jesus

P: I was glad when they said to me, C: “Let us go to the house of the LORD!”

Hymn 17 (Red hymnal): Oh, W orship the King

Confession and Absolution: P: Beloved, Jesus said, “Whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.” Let us empty ourselves of our fears and failures, confessing our sins and asking God to fill us with His peace. C: Far be it, O Lord, that I should not deny myself, take up my cross, and follow You. By Your cross and resurrection give to me Your forgiveness and assurance of new life by Your grace. I am sinful by nature. Take away my sinful desires and fill me with Your love. Help me proclaim Your love in loving service to others. Amen.

P: Thus says the Lord, “If you return, I will restore you.” Upon this your confession, I as a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen.

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: And also with you.

Prayer: P: Gracious God and Father, You have called us and all people to turn away from the darkness of sin, to repent and turn to Your invitation of life. Grant that we turn to You, take up our cross, and follow Christ with every step we take into the future on the way to Your glorious promised inheritance; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer:

Offering and hymn verse: Praise to Thee and adoration, Blessed Jesus, Son of God, Who to serve Thine own creation, Didst partake of flesh and blood. Teach me that I never may From Thy fold or pasture stray, But with zeal and joy exceeding Follow where Thy steps are leading.

Prayer of the Church

Pastor: plain type. Cong: underlined, boldface type.

Dear Lord God of loving grace and faithful promise: We come to You as grateful people to give You honor and praise for taking pity on us. Instead of justly punishing us for all our sins against You, You have forgiven and justified us in Jesus. His perfect obedience is our righteousness. His sacrificial death is the full payment of our debt.

We now wish to offer ourselves as living sacrifices in service to You. Supply each of us with Your gifts as You choose. Show us where and how to use our gifts to speak Your Word, teach, encourage, and work in harmony with one another to carry out Your work.

We also pray for our synod leaders who will meet this week in Eau Claire. By Your gospel good news renew their minds and fill their hearts with love for You and all the souls still in need of hearing that Jesus died for them. Grant our CLC boards and Coordinating Council true wisdom to make the most of every opportunity You provide.

Preserve and care for us in our daily work and activities this week. We especially pray for BJ Nelson who will undergo a kidney transplant on Wednesday. Protect him and the donor from all harm. Bless the surgeons and their teams with the skill and whatever else is needed. According to Your will, may the surgery be successful and free from complications.

Receive our offerings. May they be cheerfully and generously given as a means of expressing our love for You and honoring Your name.

In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

each one a measure of faith. For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; or ministry, let us it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

COME, LET US WORSHIP! I. By keeping God’s mercy in view. II. By offering our bodies in service. III. By being transformed in mind.

IV. By putting our gifts to use.

Old Testament lesson: Jeremiah 15:15-21….Faithfulness to the Lord leads to final victory, no matter how great the hardships along the way. O LORD, You know; remember me and visit me, and take vengeance for me on my persecutors. In Your enduring patience, do not take me away. Know that for Your sake I have suffered rebuke. Your words were found, and I ate them, and Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart; for I am called by Your name, O LORD God of hosts. I did not sit in the assembly of the mockers, nor did I rejoice; I sat alone because of Your hand, for You have filled me with indignation. Why is my pain perpetual and my wound incurable, which refuses to be healed? Will You surely be to me like an unreliable stream, as waters that fail?

Therefore thus says the LORD: “If you return, then I will bring you back; you shall stand before Me; if you take out the precious from the vile, you shall be as My mouth. Let them return to you, but you must not return to them. And I will make you to this people a fortified bronze wall; and they will fight against you, but they shall not prevail against you; for I am with you to save you and deliver you,” says the LORD. “I will deliver you from the hand of the wicked, and I will redeem you from the grip of the terrible.”

Gospel lesson: Matthew 16:21-26….Though salvation is a free gift of God’s grace, there is a cost connected with following Jesus. From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day. Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You!”

But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.”

Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

The Apostles’ Creed: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn 367 (red hymnal): Hail, Thou Once Despised Jesus

Sermon: Romans 12:1-8 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to
