Renewable Energy• Global warming issue is no longer under

debate • With the rising cost of fossil fuels,

Renewable Energy must become an option!

• Beyond the raw cost of fuel there are the Hidden Costs from our dependence on Fossil Fuels.

• Health Related Costs

• Water and Land Pollution

• Thermal Pollution

Some of these costs are:

• Macro Economic Costs

• National Security

• Air Pollution

Basic Principal of Solar Power

• Solar cells convert sunlight to electricity without any moving parts, noise, pollution, radiation, or maintenance.

How Solar Cells Work• Photons from the

sun shine on the solar cell.

• The photons actually penetrate into the silicon and randomly strike silicon atoms.

• When a photon strikes a silicon atom, it ionizes the atom, giving all its energy to an outer electron and allowing the outer electron to break free of the atom.

• The photon disappears from the universe and all its energy is now in the form of direct electron movement.

Visible Spectrum and Its Wavelengths/FrequenciesPortion of the electromagnetic spectrum that is visible to

the human eye. A typical human eye will respond to wavelengths from

about 390 to 750 nm (400–790 THz)

A Photonlight consists of little particles called photons. Photons carry energy. Energy of a photon depends on:

1. A constant number (Planck's constant) =6.62606957(29)×10−34

2. Frequency of the light (ex. Red visible light) IN CONCLUSION:

frequency of the light makes a difference in the photoelectric effect.

PhotonExample of Higher-frequency photons:

They have more energy, so they should make the electrons come flying out faster.

Thus, switching to light with the same intensity but a higher frequency should increase the maximum kinetic energy of the emitted electrons

QUESTION ????TURNED IN BY TOMORROW

If you use the green filter tomorrow and block the blue color from your visible light, should your light energy decrease or increase and why?
