Alive. It is now strongly rumoured that Jag-ger will star in the film - and not the groupas a whole, although the other four Stoneswould be featured in the film.

Considerable weight was added to these reportswhen the MM spoke toAllen Klein. the Stones'U.S. Business managerand producer of thefilm, by phone fromNew York on Monday.He would neither confirm nor deny therumours, but wouldonly say: " Wait tillthe filns comes out andsee."

Asked for detailsof the film and theStones' roles, he com-mented: " I'd soonerlet the film be madeand then see what'shappened. -He told the MM thatMick laRRer and KeithRichard would write allthe music for the film.He would not saywhere the film wouldbe made.

IT had to come. Despite the doctor's reassur-ances. despite the wishful thinking of Duke

Ellington and Billy's innumerable friends, weall knew it. Probably Billy himself knew it.Death came to Strayhorn at 4.30 in the morn-ing on May 31, in a New York hospital, aftera valiant battle against cancer.

What can I say"'- said the voice of a drained, weary DukeEllington over the telephone from Reno. " What can any-one say or do? Strays is at peace now."

The contribution to American music of the witty, smilinglittle man we called Swee'Pea can never be measured. Infact, he did not want it measured. It was characteristicof him that through his 28 years with the Ellington handhe never cared two cents about the apportioniment ofcredit.

Who wrote this tune or arranged that chart? Duke or Straysor both? The answer was always an insouciant evasion.History will never know exactly what was the measureof his gifts beyond the generally accepted fact that DukeEllington and Rilly Strayhorn, individually or collectively.have brought more music of genius to the laza of thelast 30 years than any other artist or team of artists.

undoubtedly accountedfor the noised critical recep-tion the band got on open-ing night.

PROBLEM

By the time I returned, onthe final week at Scott's,everything was under con-trol, the performance wasfar cleaner and warmer, thebeat a good deal stronger.Musicians outside the bandwere commenting on Itsenthusiasm; some, inside,said they thought itpotentially the finestorehestra Dankworth hadever led.

Johnny himself, in a letter tothis paper, wrote. " Ifwere rich enough to keepmy Ronnie Scott band to.gether I would go back tobig-bandleading for therest of my life. In fact Imight even try."

How are the attemts comingon? And what, if any. arethe problems in his way?" The problem with my oldband was always one ofhaving first claim on themusicians' services," he ex.plained. "If you can't ern.ply them full-time It's hardto have first claim.

"Now, with this new band,I made it absolutely clearto everyone that they hadto agree to do all the workor none-and that includedthe rehearsals. So this timewe've had the advantagesof a regular pewarsonnel.

-Personally s delightedwith the results we got; sodelighted that naturally I

thought of trying to per-petuate the band. I'vetalked to the musicians andexplained that I'm going totake further dates only oncondition that everybody inthe band can do them. Ifone man can't do a date I

shan't take It."Wasn't this a bit extreme, I

suggested. Dankworth saidit wasn't. "It is the onlyway of maintaining thestandard we've setn our-WM'S. This meas,effect, that from now onevery man In the orchestrahas to subsidise to someextent.

jazz club engagement-notvery well -paid work - andone of us is later offereda better paid job, well. he'llhave to tam it down.

We've just done an LP forIonia,s and we'e certainlygoing to do one `ore, per

two. I hope we'll hoable to record one withCleo. We're also going ontour with the NorthernSinfonsa Orchestra, a Nov-ember tour culminating atthe Queen Elizabeth Hall.

" Really the financial aspectdepends largely on peoplewho can grant money insubsidise music of allkinds.

IAN CARR chooses MILES DAVIS'S 'Porgy And Bess'THIS album, fur me, is

one of the great musi-cal achievements of ourtime.

First of all, there's Gersh-win's music-consideredto he the finest musicalscore ever written; add tothis a soloist like Milesand the wonderful arrang-ing skill of Gil Evans andyou can't really go wrong.

I first heard this in 1959,while I was still up InNewcastle. My brother -by-law had got hold of It,and It completely amazedme. I'd never heard anyof the Mlles and Gil stuffbefore, and this was a

whole new wonderfulworld of music for me.

In tact, I thought for a longlime that Miles was play-ing trumpet throughoutthe LP, In fact he playsflugelhorn on the opentracks and trumpet muted.

Many people have criticised

the alhurn for beingunder -rehearsed, and itcan't be denied that thereare clinkers here andthere - some from Mllesand the bass clarinet on"Gone" sticks Otil a bit.But set against the fantasticachievement which thewhole thing undoubtedlyIs, these things don't mat-ter -

Every tracks has groatmusic, but I like " Ruzrard Song " (which wasdropped Irons the laterstage performances ofPorgy And Bess) and" Prayer, Oh DoctorJesus" That really Is aprayer, with Miles play-ing beautifully above thechurchy chords 1.VMM haswritten in the back-ground.And then there's "Summer-

time" - the brat versionof this beautiful song evermade, In my opinion. And
