HUMUS!?? WHAT'S THAT? A View from an OHR Food Stop by Ma Ann Chapman Chelsea, 7: 15 a.m. The tent is up, tables in place. Manfred has been here! The Stinsons, on the road before 4 a.m., wait patiently to unload and help with the setup. The first crew arrives. We scmble to get organized for the hungry hordes. A separate table for drinks is arranged; endless boxes of fꝏd and utensils are stashed away. Ann Lawton begins to slice bags and bags of bagels. Others dip peanut butter, humus, and jam into serving bowls. Carter Sherline arranges the fruit. A man appears and asks to buy tomatoes; he thinks we are a produce stand. 9:30 a.m. Oops! Reuben reports that the back-up water supply is locked behind a fence. Then a mistake in a nearby route marking is discovered. And, I lock my keys in my car! Our tsty radio operator, Steve Andre, starts calling. Chris McCown arrives. Soon after, the gate is open and so is my car. Reuben and Karl Liskow head out, paint can at the ready. Whew! Chelsea, 7: 15 a.m. The tent is up, tables in place. Manfred has been here! The Stinsons, on the road before 4 a.m., wait patiently to unload and help with the setup. The first crew arrives. We scramble to get organized for the hungry hordes. A separate table for drinks is arranged; endless boxes of food and utensils are stashed away. Ann Lawton begins to slice bags and bags of bagels. Our trusty radio operator, Steve Andre, starts calling. Chris McCown arrives. Soon after, the gate is open and so is my car. Reuben and Karl Liskow head out, paint can at the ready. Whew! It's been a GOOOOD day! We've fed 1400 hungry riders and survived to tell aboutJt. I'm grateful to our stalwart leaders. Their many hours of planning made us look so good! Compliments at the food stop sounded as if we'd managed the whole shebang by ourselves: ''Quality food--you people have CLASS'' .... ''Beautiful scenery''

''GREAT . . '' ''Y ' H .. . . organ1zat1on . ... um. umus again!'' .... WONDERFUL WEATHER!'' .... "Best ride I've EVER ridden'' .... makes me feel absolutely euphoric.

P.S. At least 30-35 volunteers did some job at the Chelsea food stop to make it function. I have no idea how many others were involved ''behind the scenes.'' For me, the pleasure of working on a big ride is partially the circus atmosphere--the quality of celebration. But what I like best is working with all the other volunteers to manage our bit of the show. If you missed helping this year, there will be other chances to join in the fun. See you next July!

The weather was perfect all weekend for the 2nd annual Northern Michigan bike combo ride, June 10- 11. After checking in at the Ralph McMullen DNR Conference Center at Higgins Lake, we went out for a quick warm-up ride on the Beaver Creek cross-country ski trails.

After lunch we met Dick Fultz (a famous local cross-country skier) and went out again to ride a nice tight single-track trail in the woods. I recognized this trail instantly by its orange triangular markers. We were on the Michigan Cross-Country (Motor) Cycle Trail, a vast network of ORV trails through the woods of lower Michigan. I helped build many miles of these trails over the last 15 years. With unbridled enthusiasm, the seven of us twisted and turned our way through narrow, technically challenging terrain. We began generating a wish list:

-Dick wished he had a lighter bike.

-Mike Muha wished for MUD; he didn't get any.

-Reinhold Cordelia wished for hills; he got them.

-I wished I had a pair of bionic knees. -Jim Datsko wished he had seen that stump in

time to go around it instead of over it. Now we had one initiated stump jumper with a

snapped seat bolt. Facing a long ride out of the woods standing up, Jim didn't look too happy. Just then some of my CCC riding buddies happened down the track, and we were able to pirate a suitable bolt from one of the motorcycles. Thanks, guys!

On Sunday we rode some more CCC trails in the morning. Tight, non-groomed stuff--real woods riding. We then took a quick lap around Beaver Creek's outer loop to cap off the weekend. Rumor has it that this mountain bike mania is going to strike again this fall. Watch your newsletter and ride calendar for details.

A SAMPLE OF THINGS TO

CO ME . . . from the Safety Committee

by Reuben Chapman

Are you sure of the answers to the foil owing questions? To learn the answers, you can ask to take a longer written Effective Cycling test by calling Joe Kraut at 663-1812. You will not only learn something, you will--if you pass--be able to take the AABTS on-the-road Effective Cycling test. If you pass both, you will be counted among the few Club-Certified Effective Cyclists. The honors and joys to come for those select few will be

· revealed in future Safety Committee releases.

1. Describe the difference in technique between using your brakes for a quick stop and using them for speed control on a long downhill. 2. In steering a bike, which comes first: turning the handle bars in the direction you wish to go, or leaning in the direction you wish to go? Which, why, and how do you know? 3. Here is the familiar Stadium and Seventh intersection that many riders use upon returning from rides. Starting from point ''A'', draw:

(a) Cyclists' proper tracks for left and right turns; (b) Cyclists' position when riding straight

through from '' A'' but waiting for a red light ( on the Stadium traffic signal).

CYCLING SAFETY TIPS by Klaus Wolter

Making Left Turns - Signal your intentions, move into traffic so other motorists will see you, use the left turn lane if provided, and make the tum after you are sure traffic is clear. Crossing Railroad Tracks - Cross railroad tracks perpendicular, or at a right angle, to the rails. Watch out for traffic! Learn & Follow the Rules of the Road - The rules of the road for cars and bicycles are pretty much the same. Learn these rules if you are not familiar with them and then follow them! Act Predictably - Avoid sudden changes in direction and speed. Save stunts for empty parking lots. Reflectors & Lights at Night - See and be seen. Light-colored clothes and reflective tape help others see you. Keep Your B ike in Good Repair - Make sure everything is working the way it should. The ''60 Second Check" is a good way to quickly check your bike. (The 60 Second Check will be in next month's newsletter.) Watch Motorists at Intersections - Make eye contact any time you are worried about the actions of a motorist/ cyclist. Do Not Pass Another Cyclist on the Right - Pass on the left. Move to the right when other traffic is passing. Let the other person know that you are passing. Point Out Obstacles in the Road - When riding in a group, point out debris, potholes, etc. Also call out things to watch for - car back, hole, glss, dog, etc. Get Yourself & Your B ike Off the Road When Stopping - Motorists and other cyclists also use the roads. Help keep them clear! Be Courteous - Act towards others as you would want them to act towards you. Be Alert - Be prepared for potentially dangerous situations. Carry Spare Parts & Tools For Repairs - You may be alone and a hundred miles from home when you need a tool. Carry what you are likely to need. Carry Water & Food - Water is a must for even short trips. Food will be needed for longer ones. Carry what you need if you're away from a source.
