The Fairtrading Post, situated on MarketPlace, is celebratingits 10th year oftrading. The shop was originallyset up in the SamworthCentre in 2005 and wasthen the very firstfairtrade shop outside ofLeicester .The originaldirectors at the time werealso instrumental in

obtaining Fairtrade town status in 2007. Meltonremains a Fairtrade town today and this yearmanaged to become a Fairtrade Borough.

In a nutshell, fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainabilityand fair terms of trade for farmers and workersin the developing world who either have been ormight be exploited by manufacturingcompanies. By requiring companies to payabove market prices fairtrade addresses theinjustices of conventional trade, whichtraditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers, and enables them toimprove their lot and have more control overtheir lives.Today the shop (as it always has been) is runtotally by volunteers and that includes the threedirectors Lynn Marriott, Dolores Harvey andHelen Chadwick.Open 9-5, Monday to Saturday, it stocks everymanner of fairtrade goods from gifts to foodstuffs, clothing to furniture and it even stockswine!Director Lynn Marriott says“We are very pleased with how the shop hasdeveloped over the last ten years and how thequality and diversity of the goods haveincreased.”

Every year the shop holds a special Christmaspreview to kick start your Christmas shopping. Here a fabulous array of special new stock, notpreviously seen in the shop, is on display.Customers are able to browse at their leisureright through to the evening at 8pm and theycan also enjoy free refreshments. Orders canbe placed on the day which will then beavailable to pick up a few weeks later from theshop.“ We are particularly excited about this year’s

preview as it will be our tenth anniversary. Weare holding it in the Covenant Life Centre, twoshops down from Argos, which will give usplenty of space to showcase our specialselection of goods from over 20 differentwholesale suppliers. The preview is a goldenopportunity to get into the Christmas spirit andgives lots of ideas for presents for even themost difficult of people!”

It’s vital that we recognisethe symptoms of a heartattack, and know what to dofor ourselves and otherswhen one occurs.

Although we think of heart attacks aspresenting with sudden intense chest pain, heart attacks sometimes start very slowly.Symptoms can be mild and build slowly, particularly in those with diabetes, or comeand go, or they can be sudden and intense. .Chest pain - often like a squeezingsensation, or a fullness, which may linger, worsen, or come and go.Dizziness or light-headednessSweating - normally a cold sweatShortness of breath - often before chestpain occurs – you may feel the need to pantor take deep breaths.Nausea or vomitingPain away from the chest - usually in thejaw, neck, back, left arm or abdomenHeartburnCoughing or wheezingSudden or severe fatigueOverwhelming anxiety

We now know women are more likely toexperience some of the less commonsymptoms - pain in other areas (particularlythe upper back) as well as shortness ofbreath, sweating, nausea or vomiting, dizziness and unusual tiredness (sometimesfor days) without accompanying chest pain, they don’t always realise they’re having aheart attack. What to do when a heart attack occursTry not to panic, but do act swiftly. If you’re in any doubt always call 999. Don’tpresume it’s just indigestion, or a virus. Boththe NHS and the British Heart Foundationrecommend that people who suspect they’rehaving a heart attack should chew andswallow one adult aspirin (300mg) tablet, providing they’re not allergic to it – not forpain relief but to thin the blood and maintain ahealthy blood supply to the heart. If you’re the patient:Move as little as is necessary to get help andcall an ambulance - don’t drive yourself tohospital. Take an aspirin, but only if it’snearby - don’t exert yourself to reach it.

The school holidays have come to an endand the weather is becoming cooler.Perhaps, although you had a great beachholiday, you felt you could be in bettershape for next summer?

Now is the time to take on afitness routine. Mentally therun from September toChristmas is a great time toembark on fitness as youhave that Christmas goal toaim for and your routine willbe back to normal as thechildren have gone back toschool!

As a personal trainer I amregularly asked what is thebest form of exercise to do to lose weight andhow often will I have to train? Firstly choose anactivity that you enjoy. If you don’t like running,I can guarantee you will use every excuseunder the sun to not do it! So take onsomething you enjoy – cycling, walking, swimming, aerobic classes are all excellent forburning off excess calories. Aim to exercise 4times a week for at least 40 minutes. Youshould break out into a sweat and feelbreathless but be able to talk, not sing! Don'tpush yourself too hard initially – if you get tiredstop and restart when you have got your breathback. If you exercise regularly you will veryquickly get stronger.

If you need some motivational help with gettingstarted then join a local class – which is also agreat social outlet and will encourage you to goif you have a chance to chat with your newlymade friends! Or take on the expertise of apersonal trainer. They can provide aprogramme solely to fit your fitness needs andleave you homework to do when you don’t seethem. I find most of my clients have done theirfitness programme if they know I am visitingthem again soon! Having a personal trainer islike having a mentor and a motivator rolled intoone.

Perhaps you put on a few pounds over thesummer and want to shed some weight beforethe Christmas break? I advise to simply cutout carbohydrates after 5pm. So have acarbohydrate breakfast and lunch but your lastmeal of the day should be your lightest – nopotato, rice, pasta or bread, just meat and

vegetables, dairy and salad. This may soundvery difficult to maintain but it really is the bestway of losing some weight. If you get hungrybetween meals then snack on fruit and nuts.Of course, keep your eating healthy. Only eat

foods that can run , swim, fly ,grow in the ground or fell off atree. Cavemen didn’t eat pizza!

With some regular exercise anda tweak to your eating habits, you will very quickly becomefitter, stronger and leaner – agreat start to the run up toChristmas!

Thought to have been invented in China as farback as the 9th century, they rapidly spread toEgypt, Persia and India. Eventually reachingEurope in the 15th century. The earliest cardswere painstakingly made by hand andexpensive. Up to the 15th century these hand-painted decks were exclusively used by thearistocracy, but the innovation of woodblockprinting made their manufacture much lessexpensive and playing cards quickly becameavailable to all social classes.

The Georgians and Victorians were keen cardplayers and favourite games included Whist,Ecarte, Faro and Loo and later games such asGin Rummy, Canasta and Contract Bridgebecame popular . The interest in card gamesbegan to fade in the second half of thatcentury as television and other distractionstempted people to abandon their socialgaming habits.

It’s good to know that in spite of computersand the internet card gaming is once moregrowing in popularity, but in addition to onlinegaming, people are also coming togetheragain to play socially.

If you are joining a club you’ll find it’s a goodway to make new friends who share yourpassion. It’s also a great way to exercise yourbrain, as a good card player combines astrategic approach to the game with well-honed recall and observational skills.

You can find a list of local clubs atwww.orcsnest.com/clubs.htm andwww.ukgmn.co.uk or ask at your locallibrary. It’s also worth asking thelandlord of your local pub if they havecard playing evenings.

20This is the totally revised BMW X1. Aimed at“young, sporty” buyers, it’s taller and widerthan the model it replaces, has a higherseating position, but has shrunk 1.5cm inlength. What’s under the bonnet? There is one petrolengine and three dieseloptions. The formerxDrive20i has 190bhp,280Nm of torque and canhit 62mph in 7.4 seconds.Emissions are 146g/kmand it’ll return 44.8mpg.Diesels come in 18d, 20dand 25d variants. ThesDrive18d is front wheeldrive only, the latter two four-wheel drive likethe petrol. We’d pick the £30,630-pricedxDrive20d, though. Why? Well it comes withfour-wheel drive, is £6k cheaper than the top-of-the-range model and still performs well. With 188bhp and 400Nm of torque it will hit62mph in 7.6 seconds, return 57.6mpg andemits 128g/km.What’s the spec like?Standard equipment is plentiful. Navigation,

DAB radio, 40:20:40 split rear seat (with handybuttons to fold them flat from the boot), alloysand an automatic opening and closing bootthat you can operate with a wave of your foot, are all included. As you move up the range, larger alloys, different trims and LED

headlights are added, whilethe M Sport adds a smartstyling pack too. On theoptions list is a heatedsteering wheel, HarmanKardon speakers and ahead-up display, plus lotsmore. What’s it like to drive?Frankly, quite brilliant. Forwhat is essentially a small

SUV it belies its size on the road. Bumps aresoaked up beautifully and the ride is plush. The high seating position is excellent andcommanding, the steering feels a littleuncommunicative at times but isn’t off-puttingwhile the diesel engine and automatic gearboxwork seamlessly. It’s a very competentpackage and feels decidedly premium. BMWhas worked hard on the chassis for this newX1 and it shows.

The verdictWe loved the BMW X1. The chunky looksmake it really stand out on the road – even ifit does look like a miniature X5 (but that’s nobad thing) – and the interior is a lovely placeto spend time. As you’d expect it feelspremium, rides beautifully and has animpressive amount of standard kit. We’d goas far to say that if you’re looking for apremium SUV with diminutive dimensions, this should be at the top of your shopping list.

26Children’s savings accounts provide a greatway to build a nest egg for later life. Here are three savings options below thatcould be ideal for your child.Junior ISAsJunior ISAs are available to children under theage of 18 who don’t already have a ChildTrust Fund. New legislation has recently beenintroduced to allow the transfer of moniesfrom a Child Trust Fund into a Junior ISA.The contribution limit for a Junior ISA is£4,080 for the 2015-16 tax year, and there aretwo types of account available:• Cash Junior ISA: offering tax-freeinterest and instant access• Stocks and Shares Junior ISA:cash is invested in stocks and shares, with no tax paid on dividends orcapital growth. Children are entitled toopen one of each of these accounts, and although parents or guardianscan open and manage them, themoney belongs to the child.Withdrawals by children are notallowed until they turn 18, but theycan manage their own accounts whenthey reach 16 years of age.The Junior ISA will be in the child’sname, but parents and guardiansopening the account are the ‘registeredcontacts’ as far as the bank or building societyis concerned.NS&I Children’s BondsThese are tax-free investments that run for a5-year term. They can be purchased by aparent, guardian, grandparent or greatgrandparent on behalf of a child, and each‘issue’ has its own guaranteed rate of interestwhich is paid at the end of the term. The minimum investment amount for theseBonds is £25, with £3,000 being the maximumamount allowed per issue.Once the 5-year term is complete, bonds canbe rolled over for another term, up until thechild is 16 years of age. They can be cashedin early, but doing so attracts a penalty of 90days’ interest. As with the Junior ISA, themoney belongs to the child rather than theparent.Interest is calculated daily and added to theaccount each year, so that the child alsobenefits from compound interest.Children’s Savings AccountsThese types of account can be opened withas little as £1, with most bank and building

societies offering at least one savings accountfor children. In most cases money can bewithdrawn with no notice.Tax is paid at 20% on children’s savingsaccounts, but it is normally possible to reclaimthe money using Form R40. Better still, useForm R85 to have the interest paid tax-freefrom the outset. These forms can bedownloaded from the HM Revenue andCustoms website, or you can pick up an R85form at the bank or building society holdingthe account.A note of caution about taxIf parents give their child money whichsubsequently earns interest of more than£100 in a tax year, the money will be taxed asthough it belonged to the parent. This rule isn’t

applicable to Junior ISAs orChildren’s Bonds.Once a child reaches the age ofseven they may be able to managethe account themselves, which is agreat way for them to learn how todeal with their money. There are two different types ofchildren’s savings accounts, andyou can open more than one:• Easy access: the interestrate will probably be lower with aneasy or instant access account, but

money can be withdrawn or deposited with norestrictions. These accounts are popular withchildren as many of them offer free gifts, including piggy banks and toys.• Regular savings: interest rates will beslightly higher for this type of account, butmoney is not accessible and you need tomake regular monthly deposits into theaccount. If any payments are missed you maysuffer a reduction of interest.Which savings account you choose for yourchild depends on your own circumstances. The Junior ISA has proven to be very popular, and the new legislation regarding transfer ofmonies from a Child Trust Fund to a JuniorISA opens up the product to more people. If you asked a child which account they wouldprefer, it’s highly likely that they would choosewhichever one offered a free gift. With this inmind, maybe the best solution is to open oneaccount to keep them happy and another thatprovides a better rate of interest.

Firstly thank you for the favourable commentsthat I received following my last article – itobviously struck a chord with many farmers, families and others in the industry.

Time to expand a littlemore on women infarming, who are often onthe front line of trying tokeep the house and farmrunning smoothly andseamlessly.

Women have been key tothe agricultural industryfor centuries. A gentlereminder about the critical role of the LandArmy and Timber Corps in World War 2 isoccasionally needed when their role isbelittled. Somewhere along the way in thelatter half of the twentieth century theyseemed to slip down the industry’s publicconsciousness, but in the last few years therehas been an increase in awareness in thecrucial role that women play. Either as farmersin their own right, or supporting the family farmin a variety of ways, sometimes unpaid, sometimes as employees, family or otherwise,or as members of the supply chain industries –agronomists, consultants, sales advisors, vetsand so on.When I worked for the consultancy ADAS, fullyprivatized in the 1990’s, but previously part ofthe civil service, it was very noticeable that attraining days, nearly all the representatives ofother companies were men. ADAS had amuch more even balance of the sexes. I’mglad to say that other employers are nowcatching up.

There are two newly formed industry groups –Women in Dairy and Women in Agriculture. Ilook forward to attending the first Women inDairy conference this autumn. Some womenhave a partner who is a farmer and they work

full time outside of the industry, wanting littleinvolvement in it. But on many farms, womenrun the farm office, act as a valuable ‘filter’ (ina similar way to a doctor’s receptionist), dosome milking or other livestock husbandry, drive the ractor, are forever ‘running into town’to go to the vets / pick up spare parts / visit thebank / drop some paperwork off, as well asmanaging the children, keeping the essentialflow of food and clean dry clothing andproviding a sympathetic ear when frustrationsneed to be vented.

One of my favouritepersonal anecdotes isanswering a knock on thedoor to be faced with ayoung male contractorasking if there was ‘anyoneabout?’. (Was I invisible? Iobviously didn’t register as‘anyone’ so must be a ‘no-one’). The irony was that asI am the one with the

relevant FACTS qualifications, it was me thathe needed to see to get his manure spreadinginstructions anyway, not Ian.

Hardest of all is the life of those who combine( as I did for many years ) working off-farmwith helping in the business. It’s very hard tomanage those competing priorities if there areno other staff members. Your husband ismilking, do you abandon a calving heifer inorder to get to work on time? Is it going tomake you late if you inject the calf that’slooking a bit poorly and needs to be put it intoa pen of its own?

I finish with a piece of wise advice that isregularly circulated by experiencedstockwomen…

‘Remember when he shouts at you when youare moving stock, don’t take it personally, youwill NEVER, EVER be in the right place.’

Making a will is one of the most importantthings you will ever do. The importance ofgetting this right cannot be over stated. Many organisations including banks, supermarkets and will writing companiesoffer will making services and there areeven “will kits” encouraging a “DIY”approach to this vital task.

So why should you talk to your solicitor?James Bolton of Oldham Marsh Page Flavellsolicitors provides three compelling reasons:

•TO AVOID MISTAKESYou get one chance to get your will right.Mistakes can be costly and cause your familyconsiderable anguish. By instructing asolicitor, you will deal directly with the personwho will actually prepare the document youwill sign. Most other providers will ask you tocomplete forms or questionnaires which will besent away for someone else to prepare yourwill. Indeed you may never see or even speakto the person making your will. This caninevitably lead to mistakes andmisunderstandings.

•ADVICEA solicitor will not just write your will but willoffer independent advice. By talking to yoursolicitor other issues can be identified whichmay affect how your estate is administered.Solicitors are the experts in making willshaving spent several years qualifying topractice law. “Will Writers” do not have to haveany formal qualifications and a less qualifiedprovider may miss a vital point which couldhave serious consequences for your family.

•PROFESSIONAL REGULATIONA solicitor will aim to give you goodprofessional advice but occasionally thingscan go wrong. When this happens the clientsof a solicitor are protected through the waythey are regulated as all solicitors must haveindemnity insurance to pay the costs of anymistakes. Unfortunately Will Writers are notregulated to this standard and if there areproblems there may be no way to put mattersright.Give your family the peace of mind that yourwill has been professionally prepared by anexpert and talk to a solicitor. You can contactJames at Oldham Marsh Page Flavell on01664 563152.

40Did you know that it was the Georgianswho made us modern? During the centuryor so following the ascent of George I in1714, our towns and cities, homes andgardens, and even our leisure time weretransformed, and the inexorable rise ofpopular culture began. it is not surprisingthat we find Georgian life and times, andespecially its architecture andinteriors, utterly fascinating.

But what was Georgian style?According to V&A curator JuliusBryant: ‘The prevailing mood ofthe period is one of classicalrevival, of symmetry, order, balance, space and calm – incontrast to Victorian clutter. Thecentrepiece of a room would be afireplace with a prominentmantelpiece, and then lovelyfloorboards, Turkish rugs, andfurniture made from walnut and mahogany, with carved edges, stable and strong.’This was, of course, the age of the mastercabinet-maker: famous names such asThomas Chippendale and GeorgeHepplewhite. If you can’t afford Georgianantiques, look for Victorian or Edwardianreplicas, and use loose covers to concealunsuitable modern pieces, as was the fashionat the time. As for fabrics, cottons and linensbecame extremely popular and beautifulprinted and woven patterns including chintzesfeaturing bright florals, bold stripes, spray offlowers, Chinese scenes and the monochromeimages of toile de Jouy. On walls, either woodpanelling or block-printed wallpaper would beperfect, or else appropriate paint colours: off-white, stone, grey, cream, a wide range ofearthy tones and chocolate. Generallyspeaking, the stronger the colour, the more

expensive it was to produce, so some peopleadded touches of brighter shades such aspink, orange, straw, deep green, ultramarineand Prussian blue.At the start of the Georgian era homes werevery poorly lit, but by the turn of the centurythere had been great advances in technology.Gas and oil lighting was the latest thing for

those who could afford it,though candles were still thenorm for most. This meant thatdecorative light fittings becamefashionable, which reflectedlight prettily in ornamentalmirrors. Period lighting can betricky to get right; either seekout good reproductions or stickto simple, timeless modernfittings that won’t clash withother pieces.

In many older homes, panelled-wood shutters look just right at the windows –you may even be lucky enough to have themin place already. If not, simple curtains madefrom a suitable fabric work well, reflecting thefact that the later part of the Georgian periodsaw the introduction of French rod curtains thatdrew horizontally – the forerunners of ourmodern curtains.

Last of all, to really get things right, add one ortwo typical finishing touches such as classicalbusts or statues, romantic porcelain figures, lacquerwork screens, rococo silver andWedgwood ceramics. And ensure that yourrooms are arranged with a nod to the Georgiantaste, with an emphasis on order andsymmetry. You will no doubt appreciate howthis gracious and tasteful style, once the verycutting edge of fashion, has become anessential element in our interior vocabulary.

That time of year is fast approaching wheremost of us start feeling as if we are beingburied alive by falling leaves.Yes, the vast majority of leaves that aredropping from our own and our neighbours’trees are pretty enough, andfor a while their bright reds, yellows and oranges lookstunning both on and off thetree. The problem is that itseems as if there is avirtually endless supply ofthem and after that initialflurry of pretty colour, thepositive feeling soon startsto diminish.

Leaves that are allowed to build up in yourgarden can cause problems - on the lawn theysmother the turf grasses, often causingpatches of die back, largely due to lack of lightand oxygen. If the crowns of the less toughherbaceous perennials or alpines are coveredin a soggy blanket of leaves, they too start todeteriorate. So, like it or not, you need to dosomething - and the sooner you get startedthe better!

A spring-tined rake is perfect for raking leavesoff the lawn, and can even work quite well ona gravel drive (provided you don’t rake toodeeply and end up ploughing up the stonestoo!). If you have a lot of lawn or a lot of leaves

(or worse still, a big lawnand lots of leaves too)then the easiest way todeal with them is to mowthe lawn. Provided youkeep the hopper or grass-collector on the mower, when you empty it outyou’ll have a fantastic mixof grass clippings and

chopped leaves. On beds and borders you’llusually end up hand picking, or if time andenergy is in short supply you could invest in aleaf vacuum or a leaf blower (and this can, ofcourse, be used on most drives and paths andlawns ).

Great, so you spend a lot of time and effortcollecting up all these leaves. Then what?Don’t take them to the tip or make a bonfire:make leaf mould. It is as easy as anything andmakes a fantastic soil mulch or conditioner.

Leaves are best rotted down on their own(they take longer to decompose and need lessair and warmth), so make yourself a simpleand inexpensive leaf mould bin. Just drive fourstakes into the ground to make the corners ofa square, and then attachchicken mesh around theoutside to make a cage.Stack the leaves in, tread orfirm them, add some water ifthey are dry, then morewater if the weather remainsdry…and then leave thembe. If you can chop larger ortougher leaves (like horse chestnut) up first, they’ll rot down much faster - either mow themwith the lawnmower or ‘chop’ them with asharp spade. It is worth avoiding very spiky leaves (thespines seem to withstand rotting and get youlater!), and any that are very leathery andtough - mainly evergreens such as holly, laureland camellia, or those from sycamore andplane. If you want to speed the process up youcan add a leaf mould activator, which isavailable from garden centres.

If space, time or money is short then you canalso make leaf mould in a bin liner or otherbag. Choose a good quality bin liner - not areally thin one - and cram it full of leaves, again adding water and/or activator if you

wish. Then stab a few holes inthe bag with a garden fork, loosely fold over the top andweigh it down with a brick. Binliners full of leaves can behidden anywhere that you havethe space - perhaps behind theshed, garage or greenhouse. Ifyou don’t like the idea of black

plastic, then there are now some lovely jutemesh bags which can be crammed full ofleaves and act as a perfect container whilstthe leaf mould is forming, but will eventuallyrot down and add to the useful material youproduce. You can see these on my websitewww.pippagreenwood.com/products.

Whichever method you use you should have auseable product in 12-18 months, but leave ita bit longer and it will be even better!

University is a time forstudying and socialisingand where gadgets play acrucial part. So whattechnology should yourteen or twenty-somethingbe packing?A laptop or a tablet isessential but don’t forget

about a printer and software too. Remembera printer that costs £30 might need expensivecartridges and cost twice as much to run as aslightly dearer one.Microsoft Office is the standard software. TheOffice 365 for University deal is superb valuefor money: It’s £59.99 for a four-yearsubscription that covers 2 PCs, Macs ortablets, including iPads and Android devices. It also offers 1TB of online storage. Apps canbe great for non-uni things too: we lovePaprika for storing recipes, Readly formagazines and Spotify or Apple Music fortunes.A simple carbon monoxide detector can be a

genuine life-saver, especially in rentedaccommodation. A Leatherman multi-tool orone of its many imitators is great too, offeringpliers, wire cutters, files, screwdrivers, bottleopeners and can openers in a single device. One important issue for students is internetaccess. If it’s Mobile broadband you're afterthen Three’s MiFi device is a little box thatconnects to the phone network and offers awireless connection for phones, tablets andcomputers. Prices start at £10.87 per monthand the devices work anywhere with 4G datacoverage.Another wireless item to consider is awireless speaker. The best ones useBluetooth to connect to computers, phones ortablets, and if you avoid the very low end ofthe market you can get surprisingly goodsound for surprisingly little money. Decentwireless speakers start at around £200,although it’s possible to spend much more.Unless you’re feeling flush and your child’sreally into music, though, there’s no real needto do that.Last but not least, there’s the Smartphone. Inthe unlikely event that your child doesn’talready have one, a decent Android phonesuch as the Motorola Moto G costs less than£150. It’s easy to program your own numberinto the speed dial and create a wallpaperthat says CALL YOUR MOTHER!

Now, whenever I go on holiday I am asked,“Where do you come from?” When I say“Melton Mowbray” their instant reaction is“Oh yes, Pork pies andStilton cheese”.I think we all know thatthere is more to Meltonthan this, even if weare rather proud ofthese two tasty items offood. So in this article Iwill endeavor to tell you things about Meltonthat you may not know.

So, let’s start with Manhole Covers, yes, youheard me correctly, Manhole Covers. Thereason for this is that there is a little knownfact that manhole covers for our roads andpaths are made at Holwell Works, just out oftown on Asfordby Hill. The works, originallyowned by the Holwell Iron Company, but nowpart of Saint-Gobain Pipelines Plc, hasmanufactured these since the complex wasconstructed in 1878. They go under the name‘Stanton Iron Works’, so next time you’re outand about around the country have a look at amanhole cover and it will probably have beenmade by the workers at Holwell.

Another one of Melton’s claims to fame, andprobably well known to many, is the amazingcricket player, Stuart Broad. After a trulyspectacular 8 wicket haul for 15 runs at TrentBridge during this year’s Ashes test match, Ifelt it was almost impossible not to includehim. He grew up in the village of Whissendineand started plying his trade at Egerton ParkCricket club in town and at Oakham schooland Leicestershire County Cricket Club.Egerton Park club is no stranger to cricketingsuperstars with England bowler Tim Muntonalso coming through their ranks.

I have already mentioned Stilton cheese, butdid you know that it was originally discoveredin 1730 by Cooper Thornhill owner of the BellInn in Stilton, Cambridgeshire. He was the first

man to market the cheese after visiting a smallfarm near Wymondham and finding the uniqueblue cheese there. He took the cheese back tohis native village and started to manufacture itand that is how Stilton got to be called Stilton.

To finish the article here is a royal connectionthat you will know of, but perhaps not in depth.Henry VIII owned the famous Anne Of Clevespub in town, however it is highly doubtful thatAnne of Cleves actually ever stayed in Melton.

The dwelling house(as it was at the time)was inhabited byHenry’s chancellorThomas Cromwell(whose sister thepuritan leader OliverCromwell is

descended from). It was he who organisedHenry VIII’s short lived marriage to Anne ofCleves.

I hope that you may have learnt somethingnew. Thanks for reading!
