Dr. Ancoli-Israel’s current interests include the longitudinal effect of sleep disorders on aging, the effect of circadian rhythms on sleep, therapeutic interventions for sleep problems in dementia, and fatigue, particularly the relationship between sleep, fatigue and circadian rhythms in cancer and other chronic illnesses. She is the Principal Investigator on two NIH funded projects. The first, funded by the National Institute on Aging, examines the effect of treating sleep apnea on non-motor symptoms (such as cognitive functioning, daytime sleepiness, and quality of life) in patients with Parkinson’s disease. The second grant, funded by National Cancer Institute, examines whether chemobrain (cognitive decrements seen during chemotherapy) may be influenced by fatigue, poor sleep and disrupted circadian rhythms with in women with breast cancer. Clinical Focus - Dr. Ancoli-Israel sees patients referred to the UCSD Sleep Medicine Center for all sleep disorders including sleep disordered breathing, periodic limb movements in sleep, narcolepsy, circadian rhythm disorders, parasomnias and insomnia. Sonia Ancoli-Israel, PhD

Armitage is the Director of the Sleep and Chronophysiology Laboratory and Professor in the Department of Psychiatry. She is also an Adjunct Professor in Psychology.

Dr. Armitage is a member of numerous International Professional Societies and has served on the Board of Directors and educational tasks forces of a number of these societies. She has held numerous grants from the National Institutes of Health, National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression, the Stanley Foundation, private foundations and industry.

Nancy Collop, MD

Nancy A. Collop, MD, the 2011-2012 president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), is director of the Emory Sleep Center in Atlanta, Ga. She holds a primary appointment in the Emory School of Medicine as professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine, as well as a secondary appointment as professor of Neurology.

Collop earned a medical degree in 1984 from the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine in Hershey, Pa. She completed an internal medicine internship and residency at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Va., and a pulmonary/critical care fellowship at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla. She became an AASM member in 1990 and earned board certification in sleep medicine from the American Board of Sleep Medicine in 1997. She is currently board certified through the American Board of Medical Specialties in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, critical care and sleep medicine. Collop has held academic positions at the Medical University of South Carolina, University of Mississippi, and Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., where she was the medical director of the Johns Hopkins Hospital Sleep Disorders Center.

She has served on the AASM board of directors since 2006 and has held numerous leadership positions in other professional societies and organizations. Collop has served on the American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM) board of directors since 1998, holding the position of ABSM president from 2002-2009. She also is a member of the board of directors of the American Sleep Medicine Foundation, for which she previously served on the Executive Committee and as Secretary – Treasurer. Collop also was on the founding committee of the American Board of Medical Specialties Sleep Medicine Examination Committee representing the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), and is currently serving on the ABIM Pulmonary Self Evaluation Process committee.

Collop has been named one of the “Best Doctors in America” and Baltimore’s “Top Doctor” in pulmonary and critical care medicine and sleep medicine, as well as a Distinguished Alumna for Natural Sciences by Edinboro University. She also has received several prestigious awards, including the Al Soffer Award for Editorial Excellence and the College Medalist from the

American College of Chest Physicians, and the Helmut S. Schmidt Award from the American Board of Sleep Medicine.

A recognized expert in sleep-related breathing disorders, Collop has conducted research and co-authored numerous studies on topics such as diagnostic testing for sleep-disordered breathing, the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and the relationship between sleep apnea and comorbid medical conditions such as Down syndrome and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. As chair of the AASM’s Portable Monitoring Task Force, she was the lead author of the landmark paper, “Clinical guidelines for the use of unattended portable monitors in the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea in adult patients,” which was published in the December 2007 issue of the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine.

Helene Emsellem, MD is a nationally known sleep expert. Dr. Emsellem has written Snooze…or Lose! to help teens understand the importance of sleep, and to empower them to own and improve their sleep-wake habits and schedules. She has also developed an outreach program to educate adolescents, parents, teachers, administrators and legislators on the importance of sleep in adolescence and the benefits of making changes in the middle and high school start times. She speaks directly to middle and high school students across the country through her engaging and down-to-earth presentation

“Sleep-Why Bother?” She also advises parents on the best ways to encourage good teen sleep patterns and is a strong advocate for changes in high school start times to allow teens to excel academically and thrive socially.

Dr. Emsellem has actively promoted sleep disorders awareness and the need for sleep education locally and nationally, acting as a go-to media resource for the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) and a spokesperson for the recent Sleep in America Polls sponsored by the NSF. She was a key member of the NSF committee establishing the National Sleep Foundation’s Teen Sleep Awareness Program

In addition to appearing on radio and television shows, sharing her expertise through various publications and direct presentations, teaching and seeing patients, Dr. Emsellem has been the principal investigator in numerous national studies of investigational agents for the treatment of sleep disorders. She has also authored many articles and book chapters and her writing has appeared in publications such as Sleep, Sleep Research, and the Report of the National Commission on Sleep Disorders Research. Dr. Emsellem has been named to the Washington, D.C., area’s Consumer’s Checklist of Top Doctors and Washingtonian Magazine’s Top Doctors guide.

After graduating from the George Washington University (GWU) School of Medicine she completed a rotating internship that included Psychiatry, Internal Medicine and Neurology.

In 1995, after leaving academia to focus more on direct patient care, Dr. Emsellem established The Center for Sleep & Wake Disorders of Chevy Chase which has grown into a full service, 11-bed sleep disorders center addressing the patient care, research and educational needs of our community. Dr. Emsellem has a passion for running her practice, an endeavor she finds both exciting and challenging. She loves teaching and is a firm believer in managing health through patient education and challenges her patients to be active, knowledgeable participants in their healthcare. Meir Kryger, MD, FRCPC

Meir Kryger, MD, FRCPC, joined the Yale School of Medicine and the VA Connecticut Health System, November 2011. Previously he was Professor of Medicine, University of Manitoba where he established the first clinical laboratory studying patients with sleep breathing problems in Canada. Dr. Kryger has published more than 200 research articles and book chapters. He is the chief editor of the most widely used textbook in sleep medicine, The Principles and Practice of Sleep Medicine, currently in its 5th edition and is the author of A Woman's Guide to Sleep Disorders, the Atlas of Clinical

Sleep Medicine, and Kryger’s Sleep Medicine Review. Dr. Kryger was the first to diagnose and report obstructive sleep apnea in North America. His research was the first to show the feasibility of using noninvasive techniques to ventilate post-polio patients in their homes. His laboratory elucidated the interaction between heart failure and sleep respiration publishing the first systematic study of oxygen in this condition. He has been president of both the Canadian Sleep Society and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. He is on the Board of Directors of the National Sleep Foundation in Washington, D.C., and served as Board. He received the William C. Dement Award for Academic Achievement in sleep medicine. In 2011 he received a Distinguished Scientist Award from the Canadian Sleep Society at the meeting of the World Association of Sleep Medicine

Kryger graduated from the McGill University Medical School, interned at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago and completed internal medicine training at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. His pulmonary fellowship was at the University of Colorado, followed by two years of research training. He is boarded in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine and Sleep Medicine and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada.

Kathryn Lee, RN, PhD is a Professor and the Associate Dean for Research in the School of Nursing at the University of California, San Francisco. For the past 25 years her research has focused on women's health with an emphasis on sleep patterns, circadian rhythms, and fatigue. Her studies have included sleep patterns of childbearing women before, during and after pregnancy, women with HIV/AIDS, and midlife women. Dr. Lee is certified in Behavioral

I attempt to integrate physiology, clinical medicine, and genetics in epidemiological designs that include: 1) genetic epidemiological studies of sleep apnea and related traits; 2) development/participation in large multicenter observational studies of adult populations; 3) development of pediatric cohort studies to study subclinical markers of cardiovascular disease in relationship to sleep disorders; and 4) intervention trials.

Thomas Roth, PhD is founder of the Sleep Disorders and Research Center at the Henry Ford Hospital, Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Wayne State University School of Medicine, and a Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University Of Michigan College Of Medicine in Ann Arbor.

Dr. Roth is a leading expert in the field of sleep medicine, and has served as President of the Sleep Research Society, Founding President of the National Sleep Foundation, Chairman of the National Center on Sleep Disorders Research Advisory Board of the National Institute of

Health, and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies, where he also served as the first chair of the Association’s Scientific Program Committee. He served on the governing board of the World Federation of Sleep Research Societies and served as its program chair. Dr. Roth was instrumental in the formation of the Association of Sleep Disorders Center and served as the organization’s second president. In addition, he is the former chairman of the World Health Organization’s worldwide project on sleep and health.

Dr. Roth is a prolific researcher in the areas of sleep loss, sleep fragmentation, and deviation from sleep processes including pharmacological effects and sleep pathologies, and has authored and co-authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Roth has received the National Sleep Foundation’s Lifetime Achievement Award, a Distinguished Research Award from the Sleep Research Society, and the Nathanial Kleitman Award from the Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Michael Twery, PhD

Michael J. Twery, Ph.D., is the director of the National Center on Sleep Disorders Research (NCSDR) in the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s (NHLBI) Division of Lung Diseases at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Twery has led the NIH’s sleep and respiratory neurobiology scientific research group since 1996, and has served as director of the NCSDR since January 2006. In these roles, Dr. Twery oversees the support of research and research training related to sleep disordered breathing, the fundamental functions of sleep and circadian rhythms, and sleep disorder epidemiology and clinical trials. The NCSDR also stewards several forums that

facilitate the coordination of sleep research across the NIH, other federal agencies and outside organizations, including the Sleep Disorders Research Advisory Board and a Trans-NIH Sleep Research Coordinating Committee. Dr. Twery served as the program officer for the Sleep Academic Award program, the Specialized Centers of Research on sleep neurobiology effort, and initiatives to study the link between sleep disorders and short sleep duration with cardiovascular disease risk factors such as the metabolic syndrome, diabetes and obesity. Prior to joining the NHLBI, Dr. Twery was a member of the research faculty at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, and for six years was a senior staff fellow at the NIH’s National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Dr. Twery received his Doctor of Philosophy training in pharmacology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Phyllis Zee, MD, PhD, MD, PhD

Phyllis C. Zee, MD is professor of Neurology, Neurobiology, and Physiology, and Director of the Sleep Disorders Center and the ACGME accredited sleep medicine fellowship training program. She is also the Associate Director of the Center for Sleep and Circadian Biology.

Dr. Zee earned a PhD in physiology and biophysics and an MD from the Chicago Medical School, North Chicago, Illinois. As an NIH

postdoctoral fellow, she conducted basic science studies on the effects of age on circadian rhythms and sleep. Dr. Zee’s career focus has been to translate basic and clinical science in sleep and circadian biology to the practice of neurology and sleep medicine. Dr. Zee’s research has focused on the effects of age on sleep and circadian rhythms, genetic regulation of circadian sleep disorders, and behavioral interventions to improve sleep and performance. Current NIH sponsored research projects include studies to examine the ability of exercise to

improve sleep and health in older people with insomnia, phenotypic characterization and genetic analysis of circadian rhythm sleep disorders, relationship between sleep, metabolic and cardiovascular risk and the effects of age on the neural response to sleep loss.

Dr. Zee is also very active on committees and panels both locally and nationally, and has been on Editorial Boards of several journals and is currently an Associate Editor for the journal SLEEP. She is on the Board of Directors of the Sleep Research Society, the National Sleep Foundation and is the Chair of the NIH Sleep Disorders Research Advisory Board.
