Clothing & Textiles JUDGING TEAMS Bandera County 4-H offers a wide variety of judging teams to participate in. District contest start in February thru April. RANGE AND PLANT ID The 4-H Range and Grass Identification Contest involves youth and leaders who are interested in learning about range-land, pastureland and natural re-sources. For the contest, 4-H youth par-ticipants learn to identify all of the 122 native and introduced grasses which are listed on Extension publication RS1.044, Master Plant List for Texas Range and Pasture Plant Identification Contests. Youth learn skills of grass and plant identification and examination, plant parts, working and learning together, and how to compete in a contest. Contact: Mike Lloyd Email: [email protected] LIVESTOCK JUDGING Livestock judging is a process of evaluating, selecting, placing, and learning the various livestock species–beef cattle, sheep, goat, and swine. Judging is the foundation of any 4-H livestock project. Selection of project animals is actually judging livestock, comparing the merits of one animal against the mer-its of other potential project animals. This selection process is just one of many applications of livestock evaluation and judging. Livestock producers, breeders, feeders, buyers, and packers evaluate livestock for their potential as either breeding or market animals. These people try to relate the “form” of an animal with the “function” for which it is intended to serve. That is why livestock judging is often called the application of “form and function” to live-stock. Contact: Sam Womble, CEA-Ag/NR Email: [email protected]

ROUND-UP, EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATION, and SHARE THE FUN

These contests are conducted annually at the County, District, and State levels. Method demonstrations are planned presentations prepared by an individual or team of 4-H members and presented to groups with the use of posters and demon-stration materials. These presentations should relate information the 4-H member has learned through work. Simply stated, these are ways of “showing and telling” others how to make or do something and sharing useful information. Subject divisions for Method Demonstration include companion animals, clothing, foods, health, beef, family life, horse, poultry, sheep & goats, electric energy, safety, and an open class.

Share the Fun is a short 5 to 6 minute skit, song, or dance to provide for social, cultural and leadership development of the 4-H Youth.

4-H members participate in Educational Presentations and Share the Fun routines as a fun way to learn to speak and interact in front of people and develop their own leadership skills and positive self-concepts. Also through this participation 4-H members develop knowledge and skills in several projects and subject matter areas.
