WarmWelcomeToOurNewMembersMatters in Membership

Despite the blustery cold weather the 8th Annual Oktoberfest golf tournament and awards dinner was another big success! Brisk Oklahoma winds and an overcast sky couldn’t dampen the spirits of over 90 golfers who enjoyed a buffet lunch prior to teeing off. About 200 sponsors and New Members attended the evening event. Our own Greens’ Frauleins handed out complimentary beer steins as German beer, Oktoberfest music, fun door prizes and a

delicious German buffet greeted the participants when they finished the tournament. Oktoberfest has become a treasured tradition here at The Greens and is our way of saying thank you to all of our Members who sponsor New Members each year. After the winners of the golf tournament were recognized and all the door prizes were given away, the highlight of the evening came when P.J. and Betsy Gaske won the sponsor drawing for a year’s free dues. Congratulations to the Gaske family who have two young sons and are active in golf and tennis here at The Greens. Member Janie Kinsinger was recognized with a beautiful Brighton cake server set for bringing and sponsoring 5 new members this year. Dixie Newcomb and Sally Dennehy were good sports and earned a pair of tennis lessons for the highest score of the day! We’ll now look forward to next year’s Oktoberfest so keep those referrals coming! Listed below are the winners in both flights for Oktoberfest 2008........congratulations and great job!

MemberSpotlight“A Warm Welcome to

All Our New Members!”

December - Sherri Baker Sherri Baker has been a Golf Member at The Greens for three years. She has been taking lessons at The Greens from one of the Golf Professionals, Chris Clark. As a Signature Gold Member, she loves being able to play golf at different places when she attends workshops and meetings. She grew up in Norman where she stayed and attended The University of Oklahoma for her undergraduate degree in Microbiology. She

then went on to attend medical school at OU. Following graduation, Sherri moved to Hawaii for three years to do her residency in General Pediatrics. After her residency, Sherri went to Duke where she specialized in Pediatric Cardiology for three years. She felt a passion in this specialty and moved back to Oklahoma where she is one of only eight other Pediatric Cardiologists in the state. Sherri works at the Children’s Hospital at the OU Medical Center. One of Sherri’s favorite things about her job is working with the kids and even though sometimes it can be stressful, it is all worth it when she sees a child a couple of years down the road and knows that without her help, that child would not be alive today.

January - Dana Stone Dana Stone grew up in the small town of Sharon, Oklahoma. She graduated from Oklahoma State University with a degree in German and French. Upon graduation Dana made the decision to go into Medical School at The University of Oklahoma. Dana completed her residency as an OBGYN while at OU. Her last two years of residency were spent at the campus in Tulsa. The program was smaller and Dana liked the chance at more hands-on opportunities. After her residency, she went to work in Midwest City for two years before starting a position at Lakeside Women’s Hospital here in Oklahoma City. She has now been at Lakeside for 11 years. Dana and her family have been Tennis Members at The Greens since 1998. Dana’s husband, Larry, works for a computer software company in Edmond. They have two kids, Erin, 27, and Sean, 24. Dana had Erin shortly after starting her residency and Sean followed three years later. Erin is married to an OBGYN resident and Sean is currently working with a traveling Visa in Australia for six months. Dana and Larry are active Tennis players and regularly meet at the Club for lunch throughout the week. The family has taken tennis lessons from The Greens Tennis Professional, Marina Robinson. The Greens is glad to have such talented and hard working professionals as members.

What a tremendous year this has been! We’ve traveled the globe with our “Wines of the World” tour, the new expansion of our deck brought a successful Summer of “Music on the Deck”, and the Food and Beverage staff is continuously striving to meet and exceed your expectations. After many positive changes, Jeff Connor has moved on to pursue other interests and I am honored to assume the role of Food and Beverage Director. I have worked in this industry for 6 years with almost half of that time spent here at The Greens. I began working here in March 2006 as a server. I then moved to the kitchen for a time before being offered a position on the management team. Considering the time I’ve spent here and that I have worked closely with both Cindy and Jason, I have an intimate knowledge of Club operations. I am confident that I, along with Steve Warren and

Holly Hoffman, can take the Food & Beverage operation and your experience at the Club to new heights. My door is always open and I look forward to serving each and every one of you in this new capacity.Respectfully,Kevin McFerranFood and Beverage Manager

Rules Wizard: 18-2a/8 Ball Played from Ground Under Repair Picked Up and Relief Taken Under Ground Under Repair Rule

Q: A player, unaware that his ball was in ground under repair, played the ball as it lay. The player then learned that his ball had been in ground under repair, picked up the ball played from the ground under repair, dropped it in accordance with Rule 25-1b and played out the hole. What is the ruling?

A: When the player played from the ground under repair, which is permissible, relief under Rule 25-1b was no longer available and the ball was in play where it lay.

When the player picked up his ball in play, he incurred a penalty stroke -- Rule 18-2a. Since he did not replace the ball, he incurred a penalty of loss of hole in match play or a total penalty of two strokes in stroke play -- see penalty statement under Rule 18.

Hole-In-One! Congratulations to the following Member who made a Hole-In-One: Jody Taylor on Hole #2 and Nita Williams on Hole #2

Tips From The Pros: Twenty DrillProblem: The player loses power on the downswing because he fails to accelerate the arms. The player cannot improve the swing speed.

Result: The player hits drives much shorter than he should.Goal: To train the arms to swing the club powerfully, so that by the time the club swings into impact it is moving at high speed. Clubhead speed not only allows you to hit the ball longer, it adds height and carry to shots hit with the longer clubs.Practice Procedure: Swing the club back and through 20 times in a row without stopping. Ideally you want to remain flat-footed through the impact zone. Some players are flexible enough to be able to swing all the way into the finish position while remaining flat-footed. I recommend you do this with a driver, swinging as fast as possible.

This drill trains you to feel how the body responds to the arms swinging and how the arms help swing the body. Do 20 swings in the morning and 20 swings in the evening, for two weeks, and you’ll see dramatic results.

Short Game Par 3 Practice Course is Complete! Construction has been completed on the new short game par 3 practice course! The next couple of months will be spent putting the finishing touches on the tee boxes and greens. The course will be open for play to our Golf Members starting June 2009. The new facility will be great for juniors, beginners, seniors and those wanting to improve their short game. It will also be great for those who only have a short amount of time available to play, and also for teaching clinics to help golfers continue to improve. This new improvement is being done without any additional charge to our golf members. This facility will make The Greens the only private club of its kind in the Oklahoma City area.

Also congratulations to the 16 MGA members who made the 2008 MGA Cup. (Players are listed below) The MGA Cup is an event just like the Ryder Cup. By the time you read this the 2008 MGA Cup will have taken place. If you would like to know the outcome please check with one of the Golf Professionals. Chris Cleary will be the President of the MGA for 2009. Helping him along the way as the Vice President is Lee Caesar. These two gentlemen participated in all the MGA events in 2008 so it seems only fitting for them to lead the way for the 2009 MGA season. Congratulations gentlemen and good luck in 2009. I would like to thank all the members who supported and participated in the MGA. Without your support the organization would not be a success. Once again, thank you!

Superintendent’s Turf If you have played golf lately, especially in the

mornings, you have probably noticed the chill in the air. The cold days of winter are upon us, which means frost delays are eminent and dormant turf is just around the corner. With this, certain precautions must be taken over the next few months to protect our course. When frost occurs, basically what happens is the water inside and outside of the plant and the membranes within the plant freeze. Any traffic (foot, carts, etc.) causes the plant cell

walls to explode damaging the plant on a physiological level. What you, as a golfer, will see is the foot prints, cart tracks, etc. which will most likely look brown or like grass that is dead or dormant. This is the reason for delaying play until the frost has melted or evaporated off. Our maintenance staff will do everything possible to allow play as soon as possible, without jeopardizing the health of the course. Once the turf is dormant, and during this transition period, it is important to be aware of where you drive your carts. Since the grass is dormant, constant cart traffic through the same area will thin out the turf and can actually kill it, leaving an unsightly bare area. For this reason, I ask you to be aware of where you drive your carts, and avoid these worn down areas, observe the 90 degree rule and keep at least 30 yards away from all greens.See you out there,Andy ThibaultGolf Course Superintendent

Senior MGA Straight from the Tee We completed our season with the SMGA Championship in September. The winners were: Gross Net 1st Place Leland Hodge Joe Rolston 2nd Place Gary Cleary Bob Haddad 3rd Place Tom Hunzicker Charlie Harris

Charlie Jackson won a new putter. We had a good year despite the many weather delays. Each tournament provided opportunities for fun and fellowship as well as good competitive golf. All male members age 55 and over are encouraged to join the SMGA next year and enjoy playing with a wonderful group of men. Charlie Harris will be the President of the Association for 2009. Charlie is a long time member of The Greens and participates in all areas of our golf program. I am sure the association will continue to flourish under his leadership. I look forward to assisting him in any way that I can. It has been a pleasure and honor for me to have served as your president for the past four years.Cordially,Jon BedingfieldSMGA President

18 Hole WGA On The Course This is my last installment to the newsletter and it doesn’t seem possible. It has been a great year and I have enjoyed being president but I am ready to hand over the reins. The slate of officers has been posted and they are as follows: President: Anne Marie Duggan Vice President: Penny Hammack Secretary: Diane Goldschmidt/Terrye Coffelt Treasurer: Elaine Davis Sports Chairpersons: Judy Wurdeman/Cindy Jones Social Chairpersons: Pam Clark/Cindy Arnold. Anne Marie will be asking members to fill the Standing Committee spots so please help if asked. The Highland Fling was a huge success in spite of the weather. I know everyone enjoyed themselves particularly the gifts and surprise martini bar. Yours truly and her partner Susan Theobald won the Derby which was very exciting. Our end of the year tournament yielded Lisa Barrowman as our WGA Champion, Jill Jones was overall Net Champion, Senior Low Gross Champion was Nita Williams, A Flight Low Gross: Elaine Davis, Low Net:

Anne Marie Duggan, B Flight Low Gross: Judy Easlon, Low Net: Peggy Metz, C Flight Low Gross: Joan Bake, Low Net: Robin Poteet and overall low putts went to Lisa Barrowman.Melanie Robson18-Hole WGA President

Hi everybody...by the time you read this edition of the newsletter, we will have completed another year for the Greens Couples Association! We finish the year with 52 couples and 18 single players,

for a total membership of 122. Well done! Since our last writing, we had a 9-hole event on September 19. The format was 3-3-3 and we had 18 couples participate. For the most part, all the couples were still speaking to each other when the event was over. The results: 1st Gross: Mike & Paulette Edgar 1st Net: Bill & Beverly Pearson 2nd Gross: Pat & Anne Marie Duggan 2nd Net: Bill Katsafanas/Charlotte New 3rd Gross: Mike & Terrye Coffelt 3rd Net: Jim & Pam Clark Next up was the Couples Association Championship. Rained out on September 13, the event was played on Sunday, October 12. The burgers after play tasted a little better for: 1st Gross: Mike & Terrye Coffelt 1st Net: Todd & Lori Summers 2nd Gross: Jim & Patti Hughes 2nd Net: John & Carolyn Hays 3rd Gross: Pat & Anne Marie Duggan Bill & Terri Simpson 3rd Net: H.R. & Diann Cunningham The final competition was a 9-hole event on October 31, but it was too scary, so it was cancelled. Printing deadlines prevent us from reporting on the end of year party on Friday, November 14, so we have no “dirt” from that function. It is probably just as well! It has been a great year! On behalf of the officers, we want to thank everybody for allowing us to serve the membership. We also want to thank Matt Davis for his great attitude and willingness to be a part of the team. And of course, thanks to everybody for playing! Hope and Joy to all!Robbie RobertsonCouples Association President
